Gush & Gripe: At My Knits End coz #FantasyFootball

How is everyone's weekend going so far? I hope it's restful, uneventful, and chill.

Mine's... lively.

I joined a Fantasy Football League just for fun and I didn't realize how intense it could be. I don't know much about football but I find myself stalking my team and getting competitive with each week. Also, my league's group chat gets very interesting on Sundays, lots of taunting and trash talking, it's sometimes more entertaining than the actual games. My point is I want to win the league and make bank! I could always use the extra cash to get books and yarn.

Yes, yarn coz I also took up knitting.

I love needlecraft, I find it such a relaxing hobby and great therapy to curb anxiety. I used to be an avid cross stitcher until my eyesight can't decipher patterns and stitch counts anymore. So I decided on knitting instead thinking it would be very relaxing and making my own scarf, socks, leg warmers, and caps would be a cool incentive. My BF took me up on that and gifted me with a starter pack. So now I'm wrist deep and far from calm (I ran out of creative cuss words to use) because I'm not learning the basics, from the jargon to the stitches, fast enough.  As you can see from the swatch below, it took me a fucking while to figure out how to knit & purl properly. Gah!

So my down times are now filled with knitting, unraveling, and starting over with a lot of cussing and deep sighs. Yup, I have yet to reach the relaxing portion of this hobby.

Meanwhile here's my current book list:
  • The Comet Seekers by Helen Sedgwick (Audio): I love the idea of tying comets to the idea of soulmates. I'm struggling with the alternating past/present timelines, not because of the style, I lose focus on the flow when my knitting goes awry.

  • Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine (eBook): Reading this captivating thriller set in Tennessee in between knitting. Why didn't I read this sooner?!

  • Astonishing Legends (podcast): A speculative non-fiction show featuring various strange and creepy historical events you won't usually find in books. It's entertaining, trivial, and geeky.
I hope you guys have a fantastic weekend and may the coming week be even better.

  1. Lol I have ZERO patience for crafts, I am more of a arts person. My mom taught herself to knit using Youtube videos and she finds knitting super relaxing. Just keep at it and you'll get it in no time.

  6. I'm so proud of you for taking up knitting, sis! My first project was a scarf, and it looked like shit, LOL. It is lots of fun once you get the hang of it, and I do find it very relaxing when I'm motivated enough to actually knit. I learned from a book called Stitch 'n Bitch (that's really the name, hahaha!) by Debbie Stoller. Her explanations were really good, and so were the illustrations. Good luck with your project!

  8. I've always wanted to learn to knit, and get so fascinated seeing the goodies that people come up once they're done, so I'm looking forward to lots of pics. Many many years ago, I was seriously into football, and studied it like crazy. Guys were furious when I won all the football pools back then. (lol) I trash talked with the best of them, and know you're having tons of fun. (lol) I hope you win it all! Hugs...RO

  10. I tried to take up knitting a few times and could barely get past simple knit and purl...and forget it if I try to watch tv while doing it!! Good luck. I'd love to really learn but have given up since my only free time is spent watching tv with the hubby.

  11. I'm in awe of anyone who can do those kind of crafts. I have ZERO patience to learn any of it. My MIL has tried to teach me but not happening lol

  12. I FLOVE knitting!! I started about maybe 10 years ago...you'll get to the calm eventually. However, I've been working on one project for a year now - I can't tell you how many times I've unraveled it to start again. That is the nice thing about knitting but it's also very frustrating! :/
Good luck with your fantasy football team! I played one year with a group of guys (including Hubs) and kicked all their asses! bwahahaha
