Loved It: Of Flame and Light by Cecy Robson + Midnight Texas

I guess lightning doesn't strike twice.

At least IMHO as far as Charlaine Harris' Midnight Texas is concerned. I haven't read the books so I can't say if the TV series is faithful to the series or not. But the boob tube version is mediocre at best. The first two episodes were good then it was a just a slow decline for me from there. I love the storyline of the psychic, Manfred Bernardo, but the rest of the cast felt so bland to me, supernatural or not. Also, there's always a LOT going on that you're in this constant level of excitement and that becomes your normal. There are no high and lows and the lack of build-up stunts the suspense factor. Again, I haven't read the books so I don't know if it's the same and if it is, that would not be my cup of tea. I could hardly keep up with the events in the TV series, visual aids and all, I'm sure I'll feel lost reading it.
Compared to True Blood (the first few seasons at least), each episode slowly builds up to a climax so the episodes suck you in and keeps you excited for the next episode. Midnight Texas just feels exhausting to me and after watching four episodes, I have to cancel the recordings in my DVR, it's too exciting it's gotten boring.

Series: Weird Girls 8
Format: eGalley
Release Date: September 26, 2017
Publisher: Self
Source: NetGalley
Genre: Paranormal Romance | Urban Fantasy

Taran Wird, who commands the power to wield fire and lightning, is an oddity in the supernatural world. But neither Taran nor her unique sisters compare to the bizarre entity known as Destiny. And Taran is assigned to protect her.

Born of two witches, Destiny is revered among the supernatural elite for her acute ability to predict the future. Her biggest prophecy involves Taran’s sister, Celia, whom Destiny decreed will bear children strong enough to take on the evil that’s rising. Yet Destiny is not alone in her predictions or individuality.

When Johnny Fate, a rock star among humans and a male version of Destiny is discovered, his powers and Destiny’s clash, triggering the start of Destiny’s demise and altering the fate of Celia’s unborn children.

Taran, her werewolf lover Gemini, and their allies must determine if it’s Fate who will decide what will become of Celia’s children, or if their lives and the world will perish with Destiny.

Taran Wird, she's my favorite sister in Cecy Robson's The Weird Girls series. She's sassy, sexy, and has a mouth like a sailor's. I have to confess though, I skipped the first book of Taran's arc, Of Flame and Light, only because of the time period. From what I read it's in the same period as book 6 but from Taran's POV and I generally am not a fan of POV shifts because it's semi-spoilery since I already know what went down or as far as the major stuff is concerned at least.

With Taran's POV introduction out of the way and a new series arc introduced, I know I can't pass up on OF FLAME AND FATE and I'm so glad I went with my gut feeling on this. Per usual, there's never a dull moment here, it's packed with nail-biting squabbles, deadly confrontations, and more game changing revelations. Non-stop action aside, what I love in this installment is the demonstration of Taran's vulnerability especially her tender moments with her mate, Gemini. I love her fierce loyalty to her sisters and their safety and her tendency to do good even if the situation calls for cold-hearted ruthlessness. Taran's an amazing and exciting heroine to follow, I look forward to reading more of her adventures and what other stuff her arm is capable of. Yes, her ARM, so if that got you curious, go ahead and read this series!

  1. I really enjoy the TV show as well but like you I haven't read the books. Really enjoyed Of Flame and Fate too!

    1. I tried reading the first book when it came out, there's so many names I got lost. But now that I've seen a few episodes of the show, I may have a better grasp of it.

  2. Thank you so much for taking the time to read Of Flame and Fate. I'm so happy you loved it! One thing, I think you have two books confused. Of Flame and Promise takes place between books. Of Flame and Light is it's own separate novel and takes place after the events of A Curse Unbroken. There's a brief recap sprinkled in but it's it's own separate novel with lots of action and humor, and yes heart, too. ❤️

    1. Thanks for the clarification, I missed the ARC window so I relied on my fellow bloggers' book reviews. I guess they can only disclose so much but the impression that I got was the first book of Taran's arc was on the same time frame as Of Flame and Promise so I skipped it. I guess I have to go back and read that one then :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Like you, I haven't read the books, so I was a little up in the air with what would happen with the series. Strangely, I started to get a little hooked, more so because of the romance in each show. I've become fascinated with how two people can be so different, yet still have a serious love connection. So I've still be doing the DVR thing every single week. (lol) Usually I won't read the book after seeing the movie, though. Hugs and Happy Tuesday!

  4. Thanks on the TV show update Braine. I don't watch TV and the only show I do watch, Outlander, I get on DVD when the season is over.
The Cecy Robinson novel looks good.

  5. Yay I am so glad you are loving Taran's story, that girl is crazy and I love her. I am watching Midnight. Texas too and hoping like heck they decide on a second season. I did read book one of trilogy and its similar, characters are a little different physically, and timeline is faster.

    1. OK, that's good to know. I was wondering if the books are as fast paced as the show. There's always a bunch of things happening and I was thinking if I was reading, I'll definitely get lost.

  6. Glad you enjoyed Of Flame and Fate. It definitely sounds like a good read. As for the show, have watched the show nor read the book. I don't know why but that series didn't interest me that much.

  8. I've watched three of the Midnight episodes and read all the books. The show doesn't set up the the place and characters as well and moves along faster, but it seems faithful enough so far. I can see how it would be confusing to watch the show w/o having read the books.

I have the this Cecy Robson for review so I'm skipping your thoughts on it until I've read it.

  10. I read the Harris series it was okay, the third book was rather open ended especially if it was the end, I have no desire to watch the show. I have Weird Girls up soon, looking foward to it!

    1. The show's ok but I could easily skip it too. It's not as compelling as True Blood.

    1. LOL it's not scary, it's more like regular people wearing Halloween masks and can kick ass in their own special way

  12. I totally missed when this came on. I had given up on TB (the show and the books) so ...

I thought her other Harper Connely series was supposed to be an HBO show. Did it fall through? Or maybe I'm imagining things lol

  14. Oh that's too bad. But if it's anything like her True Blood/Sookie book vs tv then they're probably fairly different. I really enjoy the Midnight Texas books and hope there will one day be more of them :)

  16. That book sounds like a good read. That's nice the main character shows her vulnerability and ruthlessness. Too bad that Midnight Texas tv show didn't quite work for you, maybe the books are better.
