Veronica Speedwell returns in a brand new adventure from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times bestselling author of the Lady Julia Grey mysteries...
London, 1887...Victorian adventuress and butterfly hunter Veronica Speedwell receives an invitation to visit the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women. There she meets the mysterious Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Accused of the brutal murder of his artist mistress Artemisia, Ramsforth will face the hangman's noose in a week's time if Veronica cannot find the real killer.

But Lady Sundridge is not all that she seems and unmasking her true identity is only the first of the many secrets Veronica must uncover. Together with her natural historian colleague Stoker, Veronica races against time to find the true murderer a ruthless villain who not only took Artemisia s life in cold blood but is happy to see Ramsforth hang for the crime.

From a Bohemian artists colony to a royal palace to a subterranean grotto with a decadent history, the investigation proves to be a very perilous undertaking indeed.

Oh! Vernica Speedwell, how I've missed you, your butterflies, and your trusty carpet bag!

Deanna Raybourn's A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING is nothing short of awesomesauce! A Curious Beginning left us in some sort of a lurch when it revealed who Veronica's father is. That part of the story didn't move much although Veronica did meet an aunt. It's not the best of reunions as Veronica's father's side of the family are entitled, manipulative, and can be quite callous. Armed with her quick-wit and own version of haughtiness (I guess it runs in the family? lol), Veronica handled that small reunion quite well.

As for the murder mystery case, it's erotic, hilarious, and tense. The investigation not only brought Stoker and Veronica closer, it also revealed their budding attraction to each other which resulted in a lot of blush-worthy moments on Stoker's part and some hard hitting realization's on Veronica's side. As for me, I loved all the innuendos and Veronica's offhand remarks about sex, it sure made Stoker hot under the collar and sweat bullets.

I'm absolutely charmed by Veronica Speedwell and completely enamored by DRaybourn's style of writing. The romance is subtle yet tense, the references are unconventional and ahead of the time while maintaining the tone and texture of Victorian England with its strict observance of etiquette and class. The mysteries are such brain teasers and Veronica's investigative style is clever and beyond entertaining. The dialogue is hilarious and sharp and this ongoing arc regarding Veronica's father is the main hook for me. Will they ever meet?!

A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING is a superb follow-up and I hope that we'll get more books in the future. Veronica Speedwell is the kind of heroine that will never get boring and Stoker is the perfect foil to her rather loud and carefree lifestyle. The mysteries are also layered and cleverly peeled resulting to full on reader engagement from beginning to end. Veronica Speedwell is a definite, highly recommended read.

  8. I love her stuff and read book one. I agree about the delicious way she writes about a heroine and actions that are out of time, but yet there is also restraint so it's not out of the scope of belief, too.

  20. Love that the case brought the two main characters closer together. Who would've thought a murder would equal hot sex?
