Steampunk Sundays: Wings of Sorrow and Bone by Beth Cato

Series: Clockwork Dagger 2.5
Format: eGalley
Release Date: November 10, 2015
Publisher: Harper Voyager Impulse
Source: Publisher via Edelweiss
Genre: Steampunk

From the author of The Clockwork Dagger comes an exciting novella set in the same world…

After being rescued by Octavia Leander from the slums of Caskentia, Rivka Stout is adjusting to her new life in Tamarania. But it’s hard for a blossoming machinist like herself to fit in with proper society, and she’d much rather be tinkering with her tools than at a hoity-toity party any day.

When Rivka stumbles into a laboratory run by the powerful Balthazar Cody, she also discovers a sinister plot involving chimera gremlins and the violent Arena game Warriors. The innocent creatures will end up hurt, or worse, if Rivka doesn’t find a way to stop Mr. Cody. And to do that means she will have to rely on some unexpected new friends.

Loved It: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Series: Kingmaker Chronicles 1
Format: eGalley
Release Date: August 2, 2016
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Fantasy

KINGDOMS WILL RISE AND FALL FOR HER…
BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT.

Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

Award-winning author Amanda Bouchet grew up in New England and studied French at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She moved to Paris, France, in 2001. Her first novel, A Promise of Fire, won several Romance Writers of America chapter contests, including the Orange Rose Contest and the paranormal category of the prestigious Golden Pen.

The Witch of Painted Sorrows, The Daughters of La Lune 1, by M. J. Rose
4 Cauldrons | Historical Fantasy | via Edelweiss | Atria Books | March 17, 2015
Goodreads | Amazon | Audible | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

Another beautifully written book by M.J. Rose. I love the setting, Rose's Paris is very mystical, dark, and oh so seductive. I love the whole romance aspect of THE WITCH OF PAINTED SORROWS, it's multi-layered and the entire book is a story of love. The most powerful being the unrequited type which continues to motivate this malevolent ghost, La Lune, to posess her descendants with Sandrine her latest victim.

Match Series: The Backstory (Online Dating)

Hey y'all and welcome to my new blog series chronicling my online dating adventures.

Don't judge!
Okay you can.
But in my defense, this is one of the many ways that I'm stepping out of my comfort zone. As I mentioned in last week's Gush & Gripe, I'm in the process of making a life change and I figured why not try online dating?!

Yet her hopes for freedom come to a crashing halt when a stranger arrives bearing the mark of her assigned lifemate, and he threatens war if she isn’t turned over into his care. But a lifemate is not part of the plan. Her dreams, of choosing her own path and being the master of her own will, weaken as her Moon seeks to claim his Sun.

Is it possible that this stranger, with gentle blue eyes and a ready smile, didn’t come to be her new master? That there could be more to his tale?

Gush & Gripe: Adulting & Other Anxieties

Hey Supies, what's up?!

I've been in and out of the blogosphere (in case you noticed) because adulthood is hitting me hard lately. My reading has fallen to the wayside, 16 books behind my Goodreads goal *gasp*, and fiction has ceased to be an escape for me. So many things have happened, happening, and will happen, that it's now become overwhelming I want to take a vacation from myself!

Steampunk Sundays w/Shelley: The Transference Engine by Julia Verne St. John

Series: Standalone
Format: E-Galley, 320 pages
Release Date: July 5, 2016
Publisher: DAW
Source: Publisher
Genre: Steampunk | Alternate History

Madame Magdala has reinvented herself many times, trying to escape Lord Byron’s revenge. She destroyed the Transference Engine Byron hoped to use to transfer his soul into a more perfect body and perpetuate his life eternally. A fanatical cult of necromancers continues Byron’s mission to force Magdala and Byron’s only legitimate child–Ada Lovelace–to rebuild the machine and bring Byron back.

Magdala now bills herself as the bastard daughter of a Gypsy King. She runs a fashionable London coffee salon and reading room while living a flamboyant lifestyle at the edge of polite society. Behind the scenes, she and Ada Byron King, Countess of Lovelace, use the massive library stored at the Bookview Cafe to track political and mercantile activity around the world. They watch to make certain the cult of necromancy surrounding Lord Byron, the poet king who worshiped death, cannot bring him back to life.

On the eve of Queen Victoria’s coronation in June of 1838, rumors of an assassination attempt abound. Both the Bow Street Runners and Magdala’s army of guttersnipe spies seek to discover the plot and the plotters. Who is behind the mysterious black hot air balloon that shoots searing light from a hidden cannon, and who or what is the target? And who is kidnapping young girls from all walks of life?

Desperately, Magdala and her allies follow the clues, certain that someone is building a new Transference Engine. But is it to bring back the dead or destroy the living?

Next to Gin Blanco, Finnegan Lane is my next favorite character in this series. Finn is Gin's (foster) brother, very exuberant, loyal, dependable, and always playful. Bitter Bite's been a challenging arc for Finn what with his mother coming back from the "grave" and upended his life.

Gush & Gripe: Mercy, Mercy Me

What the flying fuck is happening?! Have you noticed that the American flag is almost always at half-mast? Tragic doesn't even begin to describe what's happened, and still is happening, in the country right now. People reduced to hashtags due to senseless killings rooting from ignorance, superiority complexes, and so much hate!

Bright Blaze of Magic, Black Blade , by Jennifer Estep
4 Cauldrons | via NetGalley | April 26, 2016
Kensington Books | Young Adult | Urban Fantasy
GoodreadsAmazon | Audible | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

BRIGHT BLAZE OF MAGIC is a fantastic ending to a fantastic series. Jennifer Estep delivered a fitting conclusion to all the build-up regarding black blades, monsters, magic, and feuding families. Lila might be the lead, but everyone had their chance to be the hero, proving that beating the enemy is more of a team effort than a super fantastical tale of how one teenager beat a formidable and more experienced foe. My favorite parts are the ones with the monsters, especially the ones with the lochness, its scenes with Lila are very touching. Once again, JEstep surpassed whatever expectations I have including ones I wasn't aware of. Yes, Black Blade, is that good. I look forward to her next series, this lady's imagination is boundless and how she executes her fantasies into stories is flawless. A definite must-read author for fans of the Urban Fantasy genre.

Gush & Gripe: The Time I Skipped My 5th

Hi Folks!

I'd like to first, thank ALL of you for the unbelievable blog love and support. I can't believe Talk Supe is 5 already and it's evolved so much and went through a lot of tweaking before the things got here. If you're a close follower, you'd see the "moods" of the blog. Currently, Talk Supe is more laid back, more like a book diary than an active participant in the book industry.

I know this boring to some, but it's serving it's purpose (as far as I'm concerned anyway) at the moment. I know it's a "tale as old as time", but like most bloggers, Talk Supe started because of love for books and a venue to just Gush & Gripe. Then things became exciting, hooked up with authors and tour companies and Talk Supe got in the game. Then it peaked when all the arcs came rolling in, keeping up with release dates got stressful but still exciting. Blogging may be a hobby, but there's also a competitive edge to it and you want to be ahead of the curve.

But as amazing as all that is, it eroded the enjoyment I got out of reading. So I slowly pulled back and did my best to get back to the enjoyment part. And that's what's been happening in the last two years hence my decision of skipping a big blog bonanza on Talk Supe's 5th.

Blogiversaries are ways for us to express gratitude by offering giveaways and virtually inviting people over to celebrate. This year, I decided to celebrate myself for a change and just read what I wanted to, posted when I felt like it and stayed relatively quiet last month.

That said, I hope you believe me when I say I am beyond GRATEFUL and HONORED to have come this far. To all the authors, publishers, tour organizers, my awesome followers, and my fellow blogger rockstars, MUCHOS GRACIAS! SALAMAT! THANK YOU for allowing me to be part of this sphere and for inspiring me to keep doing what I like to do just because I like it.
