Jane Eyre meets Beauty and the Beast.

When Lucy Pickett arrives at Blackwell Manor to tend to her ailing cousin, Kate, she finds more than she bargained for. A restless ghost roams the hallways, werewolves have been reported in the area, and vampires lurk across the Scottish border. Lord Miles himself is clearly hiding a secret. He is brash and inhospitable, and does not take kindly to visitors—even one as smart and attractive as Miss Pickett. He is unsettled by the mysterious deaths of his new wife, Clara, and his sister, Marie. Working together, Miles and Lucy attempt to restore peace to Blackwell Manor. But can Lucy solve the mystery of Miles? Can she love the man—beast and all?

BEAUTY AND THE CLOCKWORK BEAST by Nancy Campbell Allen is more of a gothic romance (IMO) than a steampunk one. I think this is good news for some people who are not into steampunk but enjoy a good historical romance with some fantasy in the mix. I haven't read a good vampire-werewolf themed novel in a long time so it's quite a treat to have that in Steampunk Proper Romance
Like I mentioned, the steampunk is very subtle and isn't a plot driver. If anything, it's just a wonderful accessory to the setting. The romance is tension filled, the push and pull between Lucy Pickett and Lord Miles is delicious and intense in a lot of ways. Lord Miles is haunted by the deaths of his wife and sister while trying to manage his "curse". Meanwhile, Lucy comes barreling in his life, bringing a lot of sass and sunshine that the poor dude didn't have much of a choice but fall for her. I guess it's easy to figure out that Miles is the Beast the blurb has referenced to and he is very effective at being ornery and lovable at the same time.

I enjoyed BEAUTY AND THE CLOCKWORK BEAST. NACampbell did well in terms of painting such a gothic landscape for us, it's very atmospheric in its ominous tone. There's a lot of creeptastic moments too, not overly frightening, but done in such a way that will make you curious and a little wary at the same time. The mystery isn't much of a brain buster, I was more interested in the motives and boy, was it a surprise. Anyway, I love this series debut, I'll definitely be following Steampunk Proper Romance.

  2. You said the magic word. I used to devour older gothic suspense romances so I definitely would trade some steampunk in to get that. Sounds great!

  10. I haven't read a lot of steampunk books, but it also sounds nice how steampunk can just be there as an accessory to the setting. And I am always up for a good werewolf or vampire book. I love it when the author can manage to convey that atmospheric feel, it's so rare to find that in books. Great review!
