After thwarting a deadly coup and saving the alliance between their worlds, Cara and Aelyx have finally earned a break. Their tiny island colony is everything they dreamed it would be―days spent gathering shells on the beach and nights in each other’s arms. But the vacation is short-lived.The treaty between Earth and L’eihr has awakened an ancient force that threatens to destroy them all. The Aribol, mysterious guardians charged with maintaining interstellar peace, deem the alliance a threat to the galaxy. They order a separation of the races, decreeing humans and L’eihrs must return to their own planets within the month or face extinction. In fact, they already have agents in place on Earth, ready to begin. With the clock ticking, Aelyx and Cara assemble a team of colonists and race back to Earth, where they unite with old friends to solve the mystery of who the Aribol are, what they want, and the real reason the alliance has provoked them. As tensions build to a full-scale war, Aelyx and Cara must fight harder than ever―not just for their future, but for the survival of both their worlds.
UNITED is the third and final installment in author Melissa Landers Alienated trilogy. Landers once again alternates narratives between Cara Sweeney, and Aelyx from the planet L'eihr. Several years ago, Aliens arrived from the planet L'eihr and made first contact with Earth. In an effort to open up dialogue and form an alliance between the two worlds, the L'eihr's offered to help cure Cara Sweeney's mother of cancer. Chosen by the L'eihr's as part of LEAP (L'eihr Exchange Ambassador Program), Cara found herself looking at a future that is bright and full of possibilities.
Little did she know at the time, that she would need to become a hero in order to save both races, now called Noven, that are connected by DNA through a superior alien race. Cara and friends have stopped a coup against the Way by Jaxen and his sister Aisly. They have saved the alliance between the planets and now must face an even more dangerous adversary in the Aribol who really knows how to make an entrance. But, Cara isn't given much choice in the matter when the Aribol demand that Cara and her human-kind return to Earth, while Aelyx and his L'eihr return to their planet or face extinction.
UNITED really is a struggle between Humans and L'eihr against the Aribol and Jaxen/Aisly who have become thorns in the sides of Cara and her friends. United is a story that is perfectly paced and has enough twists and subplots to keep a reader content with how the series wraps up. I am one of those people who truly believes that Cara is the true heroine of this series. I know there will be some who will say otherwise and that's fine. But, let's look at the facts. Since knowing and falling in love with Aelyx, Cara has done some incredible things.
She's traveled to planet of L'eihr to get a better understanding of the culture and the people. She's faced her own form of bigotry, while also becoming friends with Aelyx's sister Elle, who is a medic and has helped her a whole lot. In doing so, Cara found that she had picked up some really powerful allies, especially Alona, the leader of the Way who asked Cara to become Chief Human Consultant. This lead to the creation of a colony where Humans and L'eihr are supposed to work together, and come together in peace and other ways.
So, yes, Cara is the hero of Alienated, but Aelyx has more than made up for his mistake from the first book. One could say that he might feel a bit left out after Cara receives more accolades than he does. You might even say that Aelyx might even harbor some resentment that Cara has become such a powerful force not just on Earth, but also with the Way who is in charge of the L'eihr.
But, don't let my love for Cara steer you wrong. Aelyx is Cara's perfect match. Unlike the previous book, Invaded, they spend much of the book together. They might have an argument here and there, but they quickly resolve the issues and move on. Also, I really liked the fact that Landers includes Cara's parents in this story. I love how adorable they are, and how playful they are when they are around each other. I also loved the fact that Troy got a bit of his own romance, while Syrine finally found her voice that wasn't there in the previous novel.
