Nova will learn it takes more than sheer strength to be a superhero. Her world implodes when Fortune strikes back for all the trouble she's caused. His dangerous games put everyone around her at risk, especially when he decides to turn Arcania against its precious Heroes. Nova wants to protect Arcania, but how does she save a city that doesn't want her help?
Cole has no idea how to deal with his sister Penelope, especially now that she's learned the truth about their family secret. Thanks to Fortune, she's headed down a dark path, one with no return. Torn between helping Nova and protecting his sister, Cole will be forced to make a choice. Tensions rise as Cole and Nova discover war will come to Arcania if they don't get Fortune off the streets...or preferably six feet under.
Nova and Cole might have each other, but will they lose everything else in their mission to save Arcania?
FORTUNE'S FAVOR is the second installment in author Liz Long's Heroes of Arcania trilogy. The story picks up exactly where Supernova left off. For would-be heroes Nova Benson and Cole Warner, things haven't gone exactly as they hoped for or planned and things will definitely get bad before they get any better. After Fortune's attack on their high school, Cole's sister Penelope walked off with the villain, while Nova's best friend Henry Wheeler was being taken because he got too close to the situation.
Now, Fortune holds all the cards in his hands, while Nova and Cole are left struggling with how to find and bring back both Penelope and Henry who doesn't have the same gifts as Nova (Unbreakable), Cole (Timekeeper), or Penelope (Telekinesis). Fortune plays with Henry to the point where Henry must make some choices. Does he do what Fortune asks, or does he bring the light on the heroes who are trying to save the city? At what cost does being Nova's friend come back to haunt Henry when all is said and done?
FORTUNE'S FAVOR is a story of lots of ups and downs. Nova, who lost her little sister Sterling to Fortune, chose to be a heroine because that was what her sister thought she would be good at instead of following in her father's footsteps. Nova, as an Unbreakable, goes through lots of emotional turmoil trying to get Henry back, and saving him and his family from any future attacks by Fortune. Meanwhile, Cole is worried about his sister Penelope who has definitely stepped deep into the darkness. It is hope that she can see the light before it is too late.
Author Long really ups the stakes in FORTUNE'S FAVOR. If it were any way possible to make Fortune even more disturbing, she has done so. He is what villains only hope they can become. He, as a Volter, has lightning at his fingertips which makeS him inherently dangerous to heroes and normal people. Fortune's reign of terror is just getting started, and Long has lead readers right to the cliff without giving us any hope that there will be a safety net there to catch us when we fall to pieces.
Speaking of Nova's parents, they are deemed worthy by this reviewer. They support her almost completely and try to help when they can. Yes, they have issues, and worries, but that is what makes them good parents and not helicopter parents who don't care that their daughter is out fighting villains and saving the city from criminals. I am still curious, however, where Nova's abilities came from. That hasn't been revealed yet, and I am hoping author Long does so in the third installment called Unbreakable.
