3 Cauldrons | Novella | Urban Fantasy | Pocket Star | July 18, 2016

Next to Gin Blanco, Finnegan Lane is my next favorite character in this series. Finn is Gin's (foster) brother, very exuberant, loyal, dependable, and always playful. Bitter Bite's been a challenging arc for Finn what with his mother coming back from the "grave" and upended his life.
I usually skip novellas but given what happened in the previous book, I have to read UNWANTED. I understand this mellow and somewhat darker version of Finn, and I get that he's grieving and processing his Mommy issues. That said, UNWANTED do not sound like Finn at all, it felt very neutral and nothing like the Finn that I've come to know and love. He kicked serious ass here though and I'm hoping that his adventure is cathartic and we'll have him back in the next book.
3 Cauldrons | Romantic Suspense | Sourcebooks Casablanca | July 5, 2016
The plot, romance, and action parts are solid. Treasure hunting is this crew's main gig but they seem to always bump into some trouble one way or the other. Not complaining here, the extra dose of danger adds to the overall tension of Deep Six as a whole.
I liked DEVIL AND THE DEEP enough but miss the witty banter that had me LMAO in the first book. The chemistry between Maddy and Bran is convincing enough however I didn't find it as engaging and swoony as in the first book.

The second chance at romance helped move the plot development along in this shorty. So even if things happened fast, it's truly the conclusion to a decades long courtship between Charlie & Jamie that's the main focus of THE SEAL'S SECOND CHANCR. The backstory pulled at my heartstrings showing that Charlie and Jamie are meant to be together from the very beginning. And even if things got hot and fast with their reunion, I find the romance earnest and tender. Anne Calhoun once again delivered her signature knee-weakening brand of romance in this installment. I also love the sports romance slant of this novella.

I haven't read any of these and they all sound pretty good. I've heard a lot of great things abut the Elemental Assassin's series. I should really start reading that one.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read Finn's book! I so need to catch up on this series first.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read Finn's book. Unfortunately, it isn't going to be on audio, though I completely understand why. I will just have to pick it up and read it. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the other two authors, but they look like fun. I will have to check them out.

I don't do many novellas either, but some have been worth it
ReplyDeleteWell, Finn sure makes me want to start that series. But, oh 14 books already? *sobs*
ReplyDeleteI love novellas. I think they are harder to write, but some authors can pack a lot of goodies in them. Great selection.

I think these are the kinds of books I need to be reading right now. I can't seem to handle much more.

I read Finn's novella as well. Poor guy, I liked the book since it shows how he's dealing with everything but I hope he's better in the next one :/
ReplyDeleteI really need to start the Elemental Assassins series soon.
ReplyDeleteBraine I am so far behind in the Elemental Assassin series its not even funny, better get cracking. Thanks for sharing1
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I haven't read any of these, but it's nice to get a little snippet of what you thought.

I LOVE Finn, he's my favorite. Though I'm WAY behind on the series. I'm definitely curious to get his POV though.
ReplyDeleteThe Calhoun books and the Walker books are on the list. Glad this crop of reads offered up good reading for you especially since two are novella length.
ReplyDeleteNice shorts :)
ReplyDeleteAll three of from series I want to read or am reading. That's disappointing to hear about Finn.
ReplyDeleteOh nice! many books there! I need to read the second Estep one! so late!
ReplyDeleteI haven't any of these - or any of the books in the series. SO many books!
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad Unwanted didn't quite live up to your expectations and the character didn't sound like Finn. I am not up to date with this series, so I haven't picked up the novella yet, maybe I'll skip it once I get there, we'll see. I really need to catch up with that series once as I really enjoyed the books that i did read.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a novella reader, either; I really have to have a lot of investment in the series or the author's previous works already to pick one up. I definitely recommend the Gail Carriger novella that I read, though; it was so much fun, and I think you'd enjoy it, too!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed that one from Calhoun. Was a great read for so few pages :)
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful when characters find their endgames ^^
ReplyDeleteLook at you devouring the novellas. These all seem like fun summer reads. Calhoun is one I want to try :)
ReplyDeleteNo one can resist a Finn novella.
ReplyDeleteI only read the first book in the Gin series. I need to get back to the series, so many love it. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a decent second chance romance driving the Seal book
