She may no longer be human…but she’s their only hope.

In the concluding book in the otherworldly Taking trilogy, Kyra struggles to understand who she is as she races to save the world from complete destruction.

Ever since Kyra was abducted by aliens and then returned to earth, she has known there was something different about her. Now she knows the truth: she is an alien too. Her alien captors replaced all her human DNA with their own—gifting her with supernatural powers like incredible healing, enhanced eyesight, and telekinesis. But when she’s captured by an unexpected enemy, Kyra begins to wonder if her abilities are also a curse. And is she, as her enemies believe, meant to play some key role in helping an impending alien invasion? Is it programmed into her, something inescapable? Or can she fight that destiny?

No matter what the truth is, Kyra is sure of one thing: She just rescued the love of her life, Tyler, and she is not going to stand by and let anyone hurt him or her friends. Whatever it takes, Kyra will do everything in her power to save the world…even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice.

COUNTDOWN is the third and final installment in Kimberly Derting's The Taking trilogy. Five years ago, 16-year old Kyra Agnew was abducted by aliens. A little over a month ago, Kyra woke up next to a dumpster not knowing what happened to her. She returned to a world that had moved on without her, but she hasn't aged a bit. Her ex-boyfriend Austin and her ex-best friend Cat moved on without her... together. Her mother divorced her father, betrayed her to the NSA, and found a new family.

To top it all off, kYRA found herself being hounded like a criminal by Agent Truman who works for the NSA Daylight Division and refuses to let Kyra just be. Kyra's struggles have been more than real. Her new boyfriend Tyler was also also taken, and returned just like Kyra. Kyra found friends (Simon, Thom, Willow, Jett, and Griffin) who were also abducted and then returned several days later. Now, her friends are spread far and wide thanks to a heartbreaking betrayal that ended The Replaced.

As COUNTDOWN opens, Kyra, her father Ben, and Tyler have been forced to run from powerful people who want her and Tyler. Kyra, however, is having strange feelings in her stomach, and can hear a countdown in her head. She also remembers Tyler's warning about the Replaced and their fates. What does it all mean? Does it mean that Kyra's time is running out? Does it mean the aliens are returning to finish what they started? Does it mean 3 for 1 happy hour at Applebee's? Guess you'll have to read the book to find out!

COUNTDOWN is a wild ride from the first page until the final chapter that left me confused. Kyra is a character who has had to figure things out quickly. She hasn't had a whole lot of time to question her situation and what really happened to her in those FIVE years she was missing. While I was moaning and groaning over the silly love triangle that popped up in The Replaced, I was grinding my teeth to the point where I actually BROKE ONE waiting for Derting's to make Kyra choose between one boy she loves, and one who has invaded her space.

I am rather disturbed by the way Derting wrapped up The Taking. It reminded me, and not in a good way, of Lost. I really would have loved to have a bit more interaction between Kyra and the M'alue. After all, they hold a whole lot of answers. COUNTDOWN was really a hodge podge my gosh throw everything in but the kitchen sink and see what flushes out type of story. Kyra is kidnapped. She kicks ass and takes names. She meets an alien. She flies an awesome spaceship aka Will Smith in Independence Day. Plus, she finally gets a whole lot of answers she's been hoping for, and some she probably could have done without.

In the end, I do recommend The Taking. I recommend that you take each both as they were released and don't stop even with the evil cliffhanger endings that ended both The Taking and The Replaced. I am A-Okay with Kyra spending a nice chunk of story time being kidnapped, alone, and then fighting her way out while saving a friend. I am still scratching my head over the ending. No, I am not obsessive. Here's another thing, while I do recommend reading both previous books first, Derting summarizes nicely over the first part of the book.
