His office temptation is now his full-blown fantasy…
Paying down her sister’s debts has left Emma Strickland with little more than the thrift store suit on her back. And as if the suckfest couldn’t get worse, she’s forced to moonlight as a waitress to support herself and her cat. At a strip club. Her uptight, sexy-as-hell boss Brody Kane can never find out.
Texas property tycoon Brody Kane hired Emma for her spreadsheet skills, but her prim and proper demeanor sealed the deal. There’s no room in his life for a sexy distraction … and yet, he can’t stop lusting after the delicious Ms. Strickland. And then he takes an important client to a Chicago strip club and gets the worst lap dance in adult entertainment history. From Emma.
Now that he knows his office good girl has a naughty streak, Brody makes it his mission to uncover her secrets, one steamy, illicit, over-the-desk encounter at a time. But Emma is hiding more than her side job, and her final secret could end up destroying them both.
Where to start?! There's so many things I absolutely love about Kate Meader's TAKING THE SCORE my thoughts are jumbled and tumbling off each other. Let's bring out the handy bullets!
- TAKING THE SCORE takes on a few formula tropes starting with boss-secretary affairs, secret life dilemmas, ending with the Pretty Woman effect. It's done so well that I kept sighing, swooning, giggling, and blushing alternately and simultaneously. I had to pause a few times to fan myself because the temperature got VERY hot. Tip: try not to read this in public.
- Brody is a billionaire, the son of a high profile Senator who is decked with a pretty face and a gorgeous body. He's also a nerd who fanboys over Dr. Who, as gentle as men these days go, and an overall good guy. He also likes to growl when displeased, wears glasses, doesn't act like an Alpha jerk, and is not into kink! A guy after my heart and undies!
- Emma is a good girl with sharp edges. She can be a stereotype at times but didn't try too hard to endear herself to the readers or even Brody. She's very likable, witty, strong willed, can be Type-A when needed, and very vulnerable and raw in private. She had a rough past but didn't dwell on it nor used it as an excuse to justify her current circumstances. This girl is no frills, no drama, and I want to be her buddy.
- The romance is cute. These two had a crush on each other for the longest time until Fate stepped in and sorted things out for them. It can be predictable at times but it didn't dull its intended effect. Brody and Emma are so swoony and it's not because of some corny lines or grand gestures, they just have amazing chemistry and it needs no further embellishments.
TAKING THE SCORE as a whole is very straightforward. It didn't dilly dally nor did KMeader contrive drama for drama's sake. Both characters acted according to their personalities and didn't complicate matter unnecessarily. I love its sweet complex simplicity, a modern fairy tale if you can call it that. There's no question about it, this is another winning romance novel from KMeader. In fact I love it so much I am asking KMeader if she can write my love story!
