Betrayal. Retribution. Redemption?
Six years ago, tough-as-nails military contractor Bobby Taggart met the woman of his dreams in war-torn Kabul—a sexy, whip-smart war correspondent who approached him at a local bar, took him to bed, made him fall in love…and then mysteriously disappeared. In her wake, the terrorist leader he’d been mining for valuable intel was assassinated—then Bobby discovered his phone had been bugged. And he’s pretty damn sure he’s been played for a fool.
And we have another hit from the one and only, Cindy Gerard! I'm fairly new to the One-Eyed Jacks series and so far, all the books are solid 5s!
TAKING FIRE is the 4th installment in the series and its fresh, it's exciting, a definite white-knuckle adventure from start to finish. I felt like I was reading a "movie" because I was very much engaged and found it impossible to put down the book, motion sickness be damned! CGerard made my roadtrip to Chicago felt shorter (and better) thanks to Bobby and Talia's suspenseful story.
Book-ended by a fast, furious, and sizzling romance, TAKING FIRE takes us to war-ridden Middle East, from Afghanistan to Oman. This novel was more adventure than love story. The situation Bobby and Talia find themselves in is gut wrenching and mortally terrifying. Fighting off terrorists, doing x-ops work, dodging assassinations, abduction, rabid car chases, the list goes on! CGerard took a page off Jason Bourne with this one from the looks of it. My heart is in my throat the entire time, the pace is heart stopping and the bad guys are such formidable foes!
The romance is just as good even if it didn't take a lot of pages to tell. CGerard told Bobby and Talia's love story in so few words but it didn't diminish the depth and complexity of their relationship. Bobby was Talia's mark and things moved fast in a couple of days. Not necessarily insta-love, more like #YOLO and because of the nature of their jobs (both are soldiers), their carpe diem attitude is justified. But things didn't flow smoothly, their assignments got in the way of things and things got VERY complicated. The romance overall is moving and I love how the entire thing was drawn out and resolved.
TAKING FIRE is one hell of a romantic suspense! Every One-Eyed Jack novel has a different theme and flavor that's why it never gets boring. Another incentive is you can read the books either out of order, because there's no series arc and each story is independent from the rest; or as standalone, however, I strongly discourage this because all the books are good and you'll be missing out on a lot if you skip any.
