On the island of Nil, the rules are set. You have exactly 365 days to escape—or you die. Rives is now the undisputed Leader of Nil City, but keeping the City united is tougher than ever.

Raiders have grown bolder, supplies are dwindling, and non-human inhabitants have taken a turn toward the deadly. New arrivals cause rifts within the City, putting the Search system at risk, and calling everything Rives knows into question. Desperate for answers, he teams up with the only other person searching for them: Skye, a new arrival with a mysterious past of her own. Soon the duo find themselves locked in a desperate race to save all the residents of Nil—and possibly destroy the island forever. But at what cost? And who will pay the price?

NIL UNLOCKED is the second of three installments in the Nil Series by author Lynne Matson. If you follow this blog, and haven't read my review for Nil which posted last week, you will find the link below. NIL UNLOCKED starts out right where Nil ended. Well, let's just say it begins with a scene where the books two featured characters finally find their way off the island and back home. After the ending of NIL, I was a bit crabby in that I never found the answers I was looking for.

Those questions were:
  1. Why are only teenagers chosen to be taken to the island?
  2. Why do you only have 365 to find a way off the island?
  3. How long have teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19 been taken from their homes, and left naked on the mysterious island of Nil which has more dangerous animals, than humans?

So, yes, I may have taken out my disappointment out on my review and for that I apologize.

Thankfully, NIL UNLOCKED is the perfect name for this story. It answers a whole lot of questions while featuring one returning character in Rives, who is now the leader of the remaining teens like Dex, Jason, Miya, Ahmed, Jillian and Macy, and newcomer Skye Bracken who finds herself on the island. Thankfully for me and other readers, we already knew who Rives is, and how he got on the island, and the fact that he's been there for over 200 days. We have already come to like him because he has proven himself time and time again. Yet, he is still only human and not perfect. But, he is also a decent, caring, and hard working leader who only wants the best for everyone.

Skye is such an interesting character. Her father is totally obsessed with finding the island where his brother spent so much time and was haunted by his experiences and those he left behind. He spent years preparing Skye for anything and everything that can and will happen but Skye doesn't understand any of it until she finds herself on the island. I said that Skye picks up where Charley left off, but I should say that Skye pushes the envelope even further in trying to find a way to get everyone off the island.

I liked that Skye found a way to meet with Charley before going on her adventure. I liked that Skye was able to give the remaining teens good news about Thad and Charley. As a newcomer, Skye is prepared like no other teen who found themselves on Nil. She read her uncle's dairy, which she found a bit over the top at first, and knows that if she finds herself on the island, she only has 365 days to find a way home. Skye is a bit brazen as well. Without going any further, the way she finds her way on the island, is totally in polar opposite to the thousands who were taken from their homes.

I dare not go any further in this review for fear of spoiling the book for future readers. Unlike with Thad and Charley's romance, Skye and Rives slowly come together through respect, admiration, dangerous situations, and equal desire to ensure that everyone is able to leave the island which has turned dangerous for humans. I do hope that I have prepared you for a brutal, and sometimes haunting two books in this series. There is one more book to come, and I am eager to see what happens next!

  1. It's frustrating when you're left with more questions at the end of the book, so I'm glad all were answered. Not too familiar with this series, but it sounds like a thrilling read.

  2. I saw that the first one was translated in French. Maybe one day I'll have to try it

  4. I liked the first one so I'm glad this was a good read as well!

  5. I'm glad that the answers came with this sequel, because I probably would not go further if I didn't know this. I still need to read the first book, but hopefully that'll be this year.

  6. Ahh... I hate it when I have to wait for more answers. I need them now.

  7. I can not wait, I need things at once

  8. I was intrigued when I read your review for book one. Glad you were able to read book 2 so you could get some answers! :D

  9. Well that sounds a little different.

  10. I can see why not having answers would be frustrating. Warning label, please, LOL. But this sounds exciting. Thanks for the review!

  11. I was very up in arms about whether to try this series after reading your first review. I was intrigued, but at the same time, I was worried about all of your questions. I'm really glad to hear that your questions were answered in book two. I might need to add this to my TBR list now that I'm a little more confident in the series. Great review.
