#FBF: The Kingdom + The Prophet by Amanda Stevens

The Graveyard Queen 2 & 3
2012 via Harlequin Mira
Urban Fantasy

Amanda Stevens' The Graveyard Queen series went on hiatus for FOUR YEARS. As I don't closely follow Amanda's updates (which I probably should starting now not just for her, but for all the authors I love), I thought that the series got cancelled or something like that. The Visitor is a surprise and since I've already forgotten a lot of the details, I decided to reread The Prophet and realized that I failed to post reviews for it and The Kingdom too. So without further ado...

In THE KINGDOM we finally learn who and what Amelia Grey is. What I thought was a simple ability to see ghosts turned out to be something more complex . Amelia's connection with the dead is deeper than your usual Medium. There's so much revelation that went on in this book about Amelia, her birth parents and her connection to the Asher family, that may or may not wreck her in the end.

As AStevens slowly let us in on Amelia's history, my head was reeling with it all and I can't help but get goosebumps as AStevens continue to tell her shuddersome ghost story. As for Devlin, this part of Amelia's life is finally coming to a head and I'm sure there's more to Devlin's story, and his connection to Amelia than what we've been let on so far.

On to THE PROPHET!

Wow. I'm so glad I did a reread because I didn't realize I have book amnesia! So many little details that I've missed and now I'm very prepared to move on to The Visitor.

The short of it is John Devlin is still haunted by the ghosts of her wife and daughter. But, Shani, the daughter, wants to move on already and she enlisted Amelia's help. Problem is, leading Shani into the light isn't as easy, because her death wasn't an accident but a homicide. And the web is bigger and more complex that what I imagined. It's heartbreaking, to say the least while terrifying at the same time. There's a lot of crazy paranormal and black magic that's going on in this world, enough to give me the heebie-jeebies.

THE PROPHET is brimming with revelations after revelations, some of it are so...bad it's unbelievable! Good lord! What I'm most looking forward to is the extent of Amelia's powers, it seems our girl can do more than see ghosts. As for John Devlin, there's an incident here that is foreshadowing on something foreboding. From the reviews I've read for The Visitor, I'm thinking Devlin isn't done giving Amelia heartbreak, intentional or not. Sigh!

The Graveyard Queen is one of the most creeptastic ghostly series I've read in like, EVER. It's serious, gasp-inducing, and if you're a light weight (like me), reading the novels just might make you paranoid and have you adding The Ghostbusters on speed dial. AStevens has successfully written a series that straddles the Urban Fantasy and Horror genre with such finesse, it's nothing short of fantastic! So it is with great excitement and trepidation that I forge ahead and read the next installment. Stand by for my short review sometime next week.

They're here because of you Amelia. They came when you came.

Ghost hunting requires a lot of energy and loading up on some scones with homemade jam sounds like a great idea.

  1. I read The Restorer years ago so I don't remember much about it. I knew that I was looking forward to a budding romance between characters though, so perhaps I will continue soon-ish.

  2. I haven't read these, so I skimmed the review. It sounds like a good one though. And that's great you decided to do a reread! Sometimes those are handy.

  11. I wish I had made time in my schedule to do a reread. I also didn't realize how much amnesia I would have to fight. Love your reviews and it does bring back a lot I had forgotten. So need to do a reread of the whole series.

  13. If characters from book series that I haven't seen in years come back, I will reread some of the books in the series to catch myself back up because I have book or character amnesia all the time. It especially happens when only one book a year comes out but for a series to go 4 years...wow.

  17. Those covers are kinda creepy, lol. I totally relate to getting book amnesia when you're reading a series and waiting years for the new book to be released; that's me and A Song of Ice and Fire right now. No new book before GoT season 6 starts. :(

    1. GoT only has 6 books so far? But the series is over a decade old now right? oi, that's torture!

  18. So ... it looks like I'm the only person on the face of the earth that has neither heard of nor tried this series. My bad, evidently. Added the first book, and I'm itching to see what the fuss is all about :) For there is fuss indeed - so many glowing reviews around this series, I've gone nearly blind reading them! :p Hugs

  19. Something about people who have the ability to see ghosts has always fascinated me, so Jennifer Love Hewitt is one of my fave actresses. While I've never heard of the book, your review tells a story I want to find out more about. Love it! Hugs...

  20. I've been seeing a lot of reviews around for The Visitor. I don't think I was familiar with this series before this book was coming out. Maybe I was, but the big lag between books, that you mentioned, is why I don't remember it. Now I can start this series and do a straight through read of it without the lag time. Yay!

I do like to do a revisit when there has been that large time frame between books to remember the little details. I don't always get to do it, but it is great when I can.

  21. I like the leaves on those covers, they are kinda pretty and a tad creepy as well. And wow a four year hiatus, I would've assumed the series had gotten cancelled as well. I usually try to follow authors their social media account or even sign-up for their newsletters sometimes, so I can keep up to date about new releases. I haven't read a lot of ghosts books, but they can be fun. I am glad to hear you enjoyed this one, they sound pretty original with how the ghost aspect got handled. And it's great when plot twists are so well done. Great reviews!
