Listend & Liked: Audio Dime Museum: Carnivale by Just A Story Pod

Narrator: Samantha LeBas
Launched: March 23, 2016
Episodes: 12
Length: 30 mins. average
Genre: Urban Legends

From the Just A Story team, comes a weekly, serialized experimental storytelling podcast which explores historical legends through the artifacts on display in the Audio Dime Museum. Part guided tour, part radio drama; each episode presents the curious story of one object from the collection. Meet your guide on this journey, The Curator, and learn her secrets as you delve into the world of possibility, magic and the unknown. Merging the suspenseful style of mystery with the conventions of ghost stories and the peculiarity that only historical fact can provide, this podcast is not for the faint of heart. Please begin at the beginning, with the *PROLOGUE* and proceed through the collection accordingly. Unlike most stories, this one does not improve when listened to in reverse.

I finished AUDIO DIME MUSEUM: CARNIVALE a while back but purposely delayed posting anything about it because I'm unsure if there'll be more episodes or I'd production halted?

Anyway, AUDIO DIME MUSEUM: CARNIVALE is an anthology of sorts featuring anecdotal accounts of some random artifact that usually has some morbid or dark background. This podcast reminds me of those defunct TV series Warehouse 13/Friday the 13th with its supernatural slant and dark magicks. Definitely right up my alley as a few of the stories are hair-raising and very disturbing like serial murders and cannibalism.

Loved It: The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

Narrator: Amy Schumer
Release Date: August 16, 2016
Publisher: Gallery Books
Length: 8h 6m
Source: Borrowed via Overdrive
Genre: Memoir | Humor

The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is - a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friends - an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she's experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor's secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably - but only because it's over.

I'm not an Amy Schumer fan. I don't find her stand-up particularly funny, but I do admire her spunk and attitude towards her celebrity fame. And it's this dichotomy of passive admiration that I have for her that pushed me to read her memoir.

Series: The Light 2
Format: eGalley
Release Date: October 18, 2016
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

Genre: Thriller | Suspense-Mystery

Nine months ago, Sara Adams awoke with no memory. The man holding her hand told her she’s a member of The Light, a tight-knit religious group led by the terrifying and charismatic Father Gabriel. As a woman in the community of The Light, her duty is to be unquestionably obedient and to submit to the will of her husband.

But as Sara’s memory starts to return and she remembers her past, she sees that everything she’s been told is a lie. The Light is an insidious and dangerous organization, and its corrupting influence reaches well beyond the confines of the remote campus where Sara is being held.

With everything at stake, Sara struggles to sort out her true memories from her indoctrination. The desire to escape consumes her, but who can she trust? And which other followers of The Light were forced into this life, brainwashed to believe they belonged? The more she remembers, the more it becomes clear that Jacob, the man who calls himself her husband, is keeping shattering secrets of his own.

But Sara cannot flee alone, leaving innocents behind. She must fight to extinguish The Light.

I managed to break through my podcast haze and finally finished AWAY FROM THE DARK by Aleatha Romig. Her first traditionally published series which tells the tale of an investigative journalist who got caught in the web of a deadly cult.

Limetown by Two Up Productions

Narrated By:  Annie-Sage Whitehurst
Launched: July 29, 2015
Episodes: Season 1-3 Episodes
Length: 25-35 mins.
Genre: Sci-Fi | Mystery | Thriller

Limetown is a fictional story told as a series of investigative reports by Lia Haddock (played by Annie-Sage Whitehurst), a journalist for American Public Radio (APR), detailing the disappearance of over 300 people at a neuroscience research facility in Tennessee.

It had me at Tennessee.

As a Tennessean, I'm naturally drawn to any story set here. The more fucked-up, the better. I'd like to pretend that these strange but interesting things are happening in my town (which is as exciting as white bread btw) and I'm actually in the midst of something exciting!

LIMETOWN, to me, is like a mash-up of Roanoke with all these people disappearing mysteriously, and that old sci-fi show, Eureka, except that it's not funny. For a podcast that only has 6 episodes running at half-hour more or less, the serial packed quite the mysterious punch!

Thanksgiving is in a couple of days and everyone here in the US are gearing for the long weekend in some shape or form whether it's planning The Meal, long weekend somewhere, working overtime for that extra cash, or just stay-cationing.

A few of you have posted your Gratitude posts and for sure it reinforced and reminded me of all the things I'm thankful for: family, friends, job, blessings, etc.

Loved It: Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey

Series: Standalone
Format: Mobi
Release Date: January 27, 2009
Publisher: Amistad
Source: Borrowed via Overdrive
Genre: Relationship Self-Help

The #1 New York Times bestseller from the new guru of relationship advice, Steve Harvey’s Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is an invaluable self-help book that can empower women everywhere to take control of their relationships. The host of a top-rated radio show listened to by millions daily—and of cable TV’s The Steve Harvey Project—Harvey knows what men really think about love, intimacy, and commitment. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, the author, media personality, and stand-up comedian gets serious, sharing his wealth of knowledge, insight, and no-nonsense advice for every good woman who wants to find a good man or make her current love last.

After a full day of watching the news that had me feeling all kinds of negative, I tuned into Steve Harvey's afternoon talk show. This episode was about dating, like tips on how to know if the dude is a Player, a Mama's Boy, or a Potential, and it broke down this lady's dating mistakes (so cringe worthy btw). I found myself not only entertained, but actually paying attention!

I've seen both Think Like A Man movies and I didn't know who Steve Harvey was before then, and though I was thoroughly entertained by the films, I didn't really peg SHarvey as a relationship guru. Yet after watching said episode, I got so curious on what else he has to say so I ended up borrowing the book.

Match Series: Getting To Know You, Getting To Know All About You... #onlinedatingadventures

When it comes to the stage of getting to know someone in terms of dating, there are a few things that I want to know right away versus allowing time to lay it out for me. I'm just not the type of person who wants to take chances when it comes to important things.

See, I hold time as something that's almost sacred as one can't take it back, I believe it's one of the most valuable things we could ever invest on someone so if from the beginning it's clear that something isn't going to work because of fundamental differences, I suggest you cut ties with that person before you get too emotionally involved regardless of chemistry.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

Steampunk Sundays: Manners & Mutiny by Gail Carriger

Series: Finishing School 4
Format: Mobi
Release Date: November 3, 2015
Publisher: Little Brown Books
Source: Borrowed via Public Library
Genre: Steampunk | Young Adult

If one must flirt…flirt with danger.

Lessons in the art of espionage aboard Mademoiselle Geraldine’s floating dirigible have become tedious without Sophronia’s sweet sootie Soap nearby. She would much rather be using her skills to thwart the dastardly Picklemen, yet her concerns about their wicked intentions are ignored, and now she’s not sure whom to trust. What does the brusque werewolf dewan know? On whose side is the ever-stylish vampire Lord Akeldama? Only one thing is certain: a large-scale plot is under way, and when it comes to fruition, Sophronia must be ready to save her friends, her school, and all of London from disaster—in decidedly dramatic fashion, of course.

What will become of our proper young heroine when she puts her years of training to the test? Find out in this highly anticipated and thrilling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Finishing School series!

The end of an era marks the beginning of a new one. That is if you're following the timeline of Carriger's Steampunk universe. Although Finishing School released after her Parasol Protectorate, the former is a prequel in case you're unfamiliar with Gail Carriger and this wonderful alternate Victorian world she penned.

Loved It: Autobiography of a Fat Bride by Laurie Notaro

Series: Standalone
Format: Audiobook
Narrated By: Hillary Huber
Length: 7h 54m
Release Date: June 1, 2011
Publisher: Villard
Source: Borrowed via Overdrive
Genre: Memoir-Humor

In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie Notaro tries painfully to make the transition from all-night partyer and bar-stool regular to mortgagee with plumbing problems and no air conditioning. Laurie finds grown-up life just as harrowing as her reckless youth, as she meets Mr. Right, moves in, settles down, and crosses the toe-stubbing threshold of matrimony. From her mother's grade-school warning to avoid kids in tie-died shirts because their hippie parents spent their food money on drugs and art supplies; to her night-before-the-wedding panic over whether her religion is the one where you step on the glass; to her unfortunate overpreparation for the mandatory drug-screening urine test at work; to her audition as a Playboy centerfold as research for a newspaper story, Autobiography of a Fat Bride has the same candor and outrageous humor that made Idiot Girls an instant cult phenomenon.

In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie contemplates family, home improvement, and the horrible tyrannies of cosmetic saleswomen. She finds that life doesn't necessarily get any easier as you get older. But it does get funnier.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FAT BRIDE, my second Laurie Notaro audiobook, didn't disappoint! This time we get a more... err... Intimate look-see into LNotaro's love life from dating losers, an STD scare, to her eventual happily ever after. LNotaro poked fun and tried to make light out of meeting and being with the love of her life, their love story is truly sweet and gooey!

Match Series: Proud & Will Not Compromise

As well read and "worldly" as I think I am, I never realized how naive I am until I joined Match.

Men aren't created equal in that some are gentle while other are just big pieces of shit. Signing up for Match has me thinking that since it's a paid membership that it would whittle out some of the POS you'd find in say, Tinder.

While the men I've interacted so far are decent for the most part, there are still some who left me scratching my head in wonder, frustration, and even fascination. Like how can one be so educated yet remain so ignorant at the same time!

Loved It: Faithful by Alice Hoffman

Series: Standalone
Format: eGalley
Release Date: November 1, 2016
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Literary Fiction

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and The Dovekeepers comes a soul-searching story about a young woman struggling to redefine herself and the power of love, family, and fate.

Growing up on Long Island, Shelby Richmond is an ordinary girl until one night an extraordinary tragedy changes her fate. Her best friend’s future is destroyed in an accident, while Shelby walks away with the burden of guilt.

What happens when a life is turned inside out? When love is something so distant it may as well be a star in the sky? Faithful is the story of a survivor, filled with emotion—from dark suffering to true happiness—a moving portrait of a young woman finding her way in the modern world. A fan of Chinese food, dogs, bookstores, and men she should stay away from, Shelby has to fight her way back to her own future. In New York City she finds a circle of lost and found souls—including an angel who’s been watching over her ever since that fateful icy night.

Here is a character you will fall in love with, so believable and real and endearing, that she captures both the ache of loneliness and the joy of finding yourself at last. For anyone who’s ever been a hurt teenager, for every mother of a daughter who has lost her way, Faithful is a roadmap.

Alice Hoffman’s “trademark alchemy” (USA TODAY) and her ability to write about the “delicate balance between the everyday world and the extraordinary” (WBUR) make this an unforgettable story. With beautifully crafted prose, Alice Hoffman spins hope from heartbreak in this profoundly moving novel.

Alice Hoffman has been on my hit list for a long time and with her impressive bibliography, picking what book to read first to sample her writing became challenging.

Then came FAITHFUL and everything about it called to me like a siren from the whimsical cover art to the already heart tugging blurb. Shelby Richmond is an unforgettable character and her journey towards self forgiveness and genuine happiness is affecting in its rawness, her resilience inspiring, and her introspective narration of events touched me in a powerful yet somber manner.

Suped Up: The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club by Laurie Notaro

Series: Standalone
Format: Audiobook
Length: 5h 52m
Narrated By: Hillary Huber
Release Date: July 22, 2002
Publisher: Villard | Tantor Audio
Source: Borrowed via Overdrive
Genre: Memoir-Humor

Introducing Laurie Notaro, the leader of the Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club. Every day she fearlessly rises from bed to defeat the evil machinations of dolts, dimwits, and creepy boyfriends—and that's before she even puts on a bra.

For the past ten years, Notaro has been entertaining Phoenix newspaper readers with her wildly amusing autobiographical exploits and unique life experiences. She writes about a world of hourly-wage jobs that require absolutely no skills, a mother who hands down judgments more forcefully than anyone seated on the Supreme Court, horrific high school reunions, and hangovers that leave her surprised she woke up in the first place.

The misadventures of Laurie and her fellow Idiot Girls ("too cool to be in the Smart Group") unfold in a world that everyone will recognize but no one has ever described so hilariously. She delivers the goods: life as we all know it.

I was feeling antsy one day and decided to browse Overdrive for funny and available audiobooks. Laurie Notaro's THE IDIOT GIRL'S ACTION-ADVENTURE CLUB caught my attention, it's kinda hard to skip a humorous memoir with a catchy title as this right? Also I identify with the "idiot" crowd so I thought I'd give it a shot. Before anything else, I have to mention that I'm not familiar with LNotaro, her column, writing, or any of that so I started listening to this one blind with high hopes that it'll be worth my 5 hours or so.

Boy, if I could literally roll with laughter without losing my diginity, I would've done so totally. Insteadd I contained myself to LOLs, and LMAO's because LNotaro is so. Effing. Funny! I'm not sure if millenials can appreciate some of the anecdotes as a few of them happened pre-2000, so there's that caveat, but if you're not one of the selfie-generation, I'm sure you'll get a kick out of THE IDIOT GIRL'S ACTION-ADVENTURE CLUB

The humor is PG, self-deprecating, dry at times, and reminiscent of sitcoms. I'm particular when it comes to comedy, I want it smart, a little crass, and not overtly sexual or borderline nasty, and LNotaro met those with high marks! From dumpster diving in NY during the Summer, to dating woes, drunken nights, the single life, children, and fela infestation, THE IDIOT GIRL'S ACTION-ADVENTURE CLUB kept me entertained and laughing at all times. So if you need a pick-me-upper, a great laugh, or something that will make you feel a little bit better about yourself, I suggest you spend time with LNotaro, she'll have you in stitches from beginning to end.

Loved It: Dear Amy by Helen Callaghan

Series: Standalone
Format: eGalley
Release Date: June 16, 2016
Publisher: Penguin
Source: Publisher via Edelweiss
Genre: Psychological Suspense Mystery

First Class Psychological Suspense From a Major New Voice in Fiction

Margot Lewis is the agony aunt for The Cambridge Examiner. Her advice column, Dear Amy, gets all kinds of letters - but none like the one she's just received:

Dear Amy,
I don't know where I am. I've been kidnapped and am being held prisoner by a strange man. I'm afraid he'll kill me.
Please help me soon,
Bethan Avery

Bethan Avery has been missing for years. This is surely some cruel hoax. But, as more letters arrive, they contain information that was never made public. How is this happening? Answering this question will cost Margot everything

DEAR AMY by Helen Callaghan is a great read in that it's engaging enough, but not too intense where the suspense starts to stress me out. Although I think this is relative depending on one's taste or level of tolerance for psychological suspense mysteries.

I can't process fiction lately. At first, I thought I'm in some sort of slump so I tried my true and tested "first-aids" like reading novellas, favorite authors, switching genres, etc. None of it worked!
