Genre: Paranormal Romance | Urban Fantasy | Chick-Lit

If Betsy Taylor has learned anything about ruling Hell it’s: 1) she can't do it alone, and 2) she doesn’t have to. She’s got the help of a devoted vampire king, a dateless zombie, an exhausted new mom, an unshowered cop, a bitchy ghost, a kindly dead priest, and her late stepmother (“Go Team Satan!”). But the latest major hurdle in her post-dead life is so big she can’t even see it until it’s on CNN.

Betsy’s father and half-sister Laura (a former Anti-Christ with a grudge) have outed Betsy to the world. It doesn’t take long for the story to become 24-7 headline news. What’s more, people are not only prepared to believe in vampires, they want to kill them. For Betsy, social media has never felt so…unsocial.

Before long the mansion on Summit Avenue is swarming with reporters, would-be vampire/zombie killers, and desperate emos begging to be turned. Betsy has been forced into the unenviable role as the reluctant face of the vampire nation. All she knows is, she has to look good—this is hi-def!—and stay true to who she is. H8ers be damned.

Steampunk Sundays: Soulless by Gail Carriger

Series: Parasol Protectorate 1
Format: Mobi
Release Date: October 9, 2009
Publisher: Orbit Books
Source: Purchased
Genre: Steampunk

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations.

First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire--and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

This is going to be quick as a lot of you have read this or have seen it enough to know what the heck Gail Carriger's into.

A backstory for me. I've read the YA spin-off, Finishing School, and though it belongs in the same universe, Parasol Protectorate belongs to a different timeline. With that precedent, I jumped to SOULLESS thinking it's a grown up version of Finishing School.

And boy was I wrong! So very wrong to make such broad assumptions!

Gush & Gripe: Why I Think Erotic Heroes are Superheroes

If you've read a super sexy novel or erotica, I think you'll agree with me that these... people are superhumans. I mean I'm not going to pretend that I know all there is to know about sex, I just live vicariously through these people. Still I know a little biology and health science and some of the things I've read are so out there that I'm convinced that the lead characters in erotic novels have an extra chromosome or two. Here's why:

Steampunk Sundays: Aether Psychics by Cecilia Dominic + Character Chat & Giveaway

Aether Psychics
Cecilia Dominic
New Adult | Steampunk
August 25, 2015 | December 15, 2015

If love is the ivy, secrets are the poison.

Aether Psychics, Book 1
After enduring heartbreak at the hands of a dishonest woman, Edward Bailey lives according to scientific principles of structure and predictability. Just the thought of stepping outside his strict routine raises his anxiety.

Adding to his discomfort is Iris McTavish, who appears at his school’s faculty meeting in place of her world-famous archeologist father. Worse, the two of them are to pose as Grand Tourists while they search for an element that will help harness the power of aether.

Iris jumps at the opportunity to prove her worth as a scholar—and avoid an unwanted marriage proposal—while hiding the truth of her father’s whereabouts. If her secret gets out, the house of McTavish will fall into ruin.

Quite unexpectedly, Edward and Iris discover a growing attraction as their journey takes them to Paris and Rome, where betrayal, blackmail and outright theft threaten to destroy what could be a revolutionary discovery—and break their hearts.

===========

At the Théâtre Bohème, danger decides who takes the final curtain call.

Aether Psychics, Book 2
Hailed as the most talented actress of her generation, Marie St. Jean has something more to her ability than mere talent. She loses a bit of her soul to each role. When the ghostly spirit of the theatre promises her an easy fix, she’s tempted by the chance to finally live a normal life.

Unfortunately, the man she’s drawn to is the last one to settle for normal. But with the Prussians surrounding Paris, there’s no escaping that temptation, either.

Violinist Johann Bledsoe thought he’d left his disgrace in England, but a murder outside the Théâtre Bohème makes him wonder if he’s been exposed. Another reason not to stick around once the siege ends, even if Marie fascinates him.

More murders, steam-powered ravens, and past and present secrets bring them closer to discovering just what lurks within the theatre, and who threatens from without. The only way to save themselves is to reveal their darkest shames—and use the Eros Element in a way that has already driven one man to the brink of madness.

Warning: Processed in a facility where wine is used as currency and dessert is a reward. If you dislike French cooking and attitudes, move along. Things are cooking in this book, and it ain’t Julia Child.

Calling all New Adult, Steampunk, and fantasy fans, check out this character interview with Marie St. Jean, heroine of Light Fantastique, to know more about the Aether Psychics. It's juicy!

Into the Badlands, A Must-Watch TV Series

INTO THE BADLANDS
AMC | Ongoing Series
Fantasy | 45 mins./ep

Centuries from now, a feudal society has emerged in the wake of civilization's destruction. This area is now called the Badlands and is uneasily divided among seven rival Barons. Each Baron enforces their iron rule with the aid of loyal armies of trained assassins known as Clippers.

The most lethal of the Badlands’ Clippers is Sunny (Daniel Wu) -- the Regent (Head Clipper) and most trusted advisor of Baron Quinn (Marton Csokas). For decades, Quinn has been unchallenged as the Badlands’ most powerful Baron; however, the territory’s newest Baron, The Widow (Emily Beecham), has begun testing his appetite for a fight.

One day, Sunny rescues M.K. (Aramis Knight), a teenage boy who has survived a deadly ambush. Sunny soon comes to understand that the teen harbors a dark secret and has a hefty bounty on his head. Together, they will embark on an odyssey that could mean the difference between chaos and enlightenment for everyone in the Badlands.

If you follow The Walking Dead, then you've likely seen the trailers for AMC's new show, INTO THE BADLANDS. AMC is fast become a favorite cable channel of mine, the network has a great and diverse selection of TV shows that are hardly B-rated. And this new series is good so far, I won't be surprised if it makes the favorite list.

November12: Fabrics & The Drawing Board

Hi all! Braine here blogging from work so pardon the wonky format. It's been hectic so I'm cramming my shit, multi-tasks like Beyoncé. Too bad I look more like Jay-Z. Ha!

So who went Black Friday shopping last week? I did! But I went to the craft stores, perused their aisles, grabbed a few doorbusters, and held up the line for a bit because I need to use all of my coupons. Gotta make that money!
