The Creator invented the game, and the stakes are nothing less than the fate of the quick and the dead: seven souls, seven crossroads. Reluctant savior Jim Heron has compromised himself, his body and his soul, and yet he’s on the verge of losing everything...
...Including Sissy, the innocent he freed from Hell. Jim’s determined to protect her—but this makes her a weakness the demon Devina can exploit. With Jim torn between the game and the woman he’s sworn to defend, evil’s more than ready to play dirty.
Humanity’s savior is prepared to do anything to win—even embark on a suicide mission into the shadows of Purgatory. True love is Jim’s only hope for survival—and victory. But can a man with no heart and no soul be saved by something he doesn’t believe in?

Back to back J.R. Ward, I never thought this would happen and it's all thanks to Blood Kiss. I'm not great with goodbyes so I tend to dawdle when it comes to series endings. Like heck, I haven't "finished" Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke & Bone series as well as Veronica Rossi's Divergent books. It took me a year and a Black Dagger Brotherhood reboot to get me to finally read IMMORTAL.
If you're unfamiliar with Fallen Angels series, it's in the same universe as BDB, it's also set in Caldwell, NY with a couple of characters that both series shared. While BDB have vampires, Fallen Angels... well have angels and demons. They're currently at war over 7 souls which will determine who will rule the universe: good or evil. So even with some similarities, Fallen Angels is nothing like BDB, but it's just as entertaining and engaging to read.
I am not going to give a play-by-play on how the war ended and is the apocalypse happened. I found it clever, the plot twists felt organic and not contrived, the whole Jim-Sissy tandem was great including the other pairings, Nigel-Colin, and Adrian-Eddie. I have to say though, I'm going to miss the villainess, Devina, a LOT! She's my favorite character in this series hands-down, such a scene stealer, Devina carried the series hands down! I mean she's the Lucifer to Jim's Jesus/savior persona. Such a powerful adversary, and yet she's doing therapy 3 times a week because of her OCD, hoarding, the war with Jim, who incidentally she's madly in love with, all these is unravelling the demon.
Fallen Angels wasn't a smooth ride, the previous books before IMMORTAL was good at best. IMMORTAL at least managed to put a strong exclamation mark on the series, it's a great ending, I laughed a lot reading it (posted a few snapshots on the blog's Facebook page), thought the resolution was solid, wasn't a fan of the angel storyline including the HEA (felt it was too cheesy), but it's a decent ending overall. I'm speculating that there may be a spin-off (?) based on Dog's message to Ad and Ed. So we'll see, we just got a new BDB book, I won't be spurprised if there's a new angel series on the way.

I kind of want to read it just cos of Davina now, lol
ReplyDeleteOh she is so fun! You must meet her!
DeleteMy friend Vanessa loves this series but I still have to start her BBD series where I have the 4 first books in French so yes one day I'll read them but I'm a bit late I confess.
ReplyDeleteIt's alright. Maybe when the mood strikes you, you'll binge read. It's awesome!
DeleteSee I was sent this one for review but I've only read the 4th book (I know, I had to read that one for review) so I don't know when I'll get around to this book. Thanks for the review Braine! Sounds like it ended well.
ReplyDeleteI wish I can tell you that you can skip the others, but the resolution won't make sense because this one tackled the series arc. I hope you get to it soon!
DeleteFrom what I understand, Devina is supposed to appear in BDB, or at least Ward has mentioned that on more than one occasion as her signing in Cincinnati. I do agree with you that this one was better than the previous book. Great review.
ReplyDeleteOMG! OMG! OMG! Melanie!!! I want that!!! Gosh, I'd read BDB again for her! I'm such a fan of Devina! lol Thanks for sharing that gossip with me.
DeleteI just ran across Covet as I was creating a reading list, Braine. So I'm behind in BDB and haven't started Fallen Angels (at least I'm not behind) I like the sound of this last installment. You've sold me on Devina for sure. And I'm glad Ward was able to wrap things up in a way you're happy with. :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you're about to do a lot of cherry popping. I have similar plans myself, December is the month for freestylin!
DeleteI feel you about endings. I put of reading last books in series forever. I own a bunch that i am supposed to read but I avoid doing it because I don't like saying good bye. Maybe over the winter I should challenge myself to read a bunch of finales...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, glad this one put an exclamation mark at the end of the series even if you found the HEA to be too cheesy.
It's a process, for sure! lol
DeleteOh Braine I'm so much like you I have a really hard time saying goodbye to series I love and so I do like you, I delay the inevitable. But it looks like I'm going to have to give in and read this bad boy because I've really come to love Jim over the course of the series and her debut in the series was spectacular so I'm guessing the end is no different.
ReplyDeleteOh you will approve of this for sure. Jim will not disappoint you
DeleteI don't like saying good bye to characters I have grown to love, but I just tell myself, there will be more coming in the next book, the next series. Happy reading.
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental
True, thank god there are more Ward books to read.
DeleteIt is always hard to say goodbye! Glad you loved this though!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ali!
DeleteI haven't read any of Ward's books, but I may have to see what I can get from my library to start me off. There are so many PNR series that I have yet to try.
ReplyDeleteBDB is always a classic even if the latter books got sucky
DeleteWonderful to hear that it was a good series ending
ReplyDeleteThat's all we can hope for
DeleteI'm glad to hear that this series ended on a good note for you. I don't like when series end. When Series end, it feels like I'm saying goodbye to familiar friends. I know what you mean. Great Review, SW.

Right? It's like you miss them but that's it. It's like a death or something. It's worse for me because I don't reread
DeleteI read the first two in the series when they were releasing (so a long while ago) and enjoyed them quite a lot. But then I guess blogging/reviewing got in the way of reading the rest. I did buy the third but now I've forgotten so much. But still, I think this is one series I should definitely continue because I have fond memories of it.
ReplyDeleteI think the third is my favorite, the fourth my least.
DeleteI still haven't tried Ward. I don't know why I think because BDB is so far out there and readers out loving the latter books. I might try a shorter series like this. I know what you mean about putting off series enders. I have several that need to be read still too.
ReplyDeleteHow about The Bourbon Kings? She also has a few contemporaries under Jessica Bird
DeleteI'm so curious about this author but I still haven't read anything. She has so many books and long series, so it's kind of difficult to jump in now. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed this one though!

She has a new contemporary series that debuted, The Bourbon Kings, and a few romances under Jessica Bird.
DeleteOh man I love her books.
ReplyDeleteI think I've only read book one in this series. I remember enjoying it. No clue why I didn't keep going though >.< Looks like I need to pick up the series again <333
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed what I've read of the BDB series, but when I picked up COVET, it was a meh read for me. Good to see the series ended really well though.
ReplyDeleteI have put this series on the back burner for so long. Ugh
ReplyDeleteI really need to pick this series up and soon!! Love that little quote you shared. Made me laugh and also tempted me to go and grab this book right NOW!! hehe But I think my library has this whole series....so I will wait until my next visit (which will need to be sooner rather than later)
ReplyDeleteI love BDB, but this is one series that I've been meaning to start! I think I have book 1 somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI love this series, but I haven't read this installment yet, Braine. Jim Heron is great, and I want to know what this crazy dance between him and Devina will amount to...
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
Lexxie @ (un)Conventional Bookviews
I need to finish this series...im still have book 3 that I need to read. I've been dying to see how Jim and Devina finish their cray cray
