Sometimes escape is impossible. Sometimes love isn’t enough.
1913. Christmas Eve. Ardis hardly expects a quiet holiday with Wendel, between fleeing Constantinople and hiding from an ancient society of assassins. And they owe a debt to a certain archmage.
In Königsberg, Prussia, they work with Konstantin on the next evolution of Project Lazarus. Wendel once called Königsberg home, the city now besieged by the Russians and their clockwork engines of war. This may be Wendel’s last chance to save his family and find redemption, but he’s tormented by nightmares and tempted by laudanum.
Ardis fears her love isn’t enough to save Wendel. Her hands are full piloting the automatons, and she’s terrified to tell him a secret of her own. Will they—and their love—survive the storms of war?
Annnnd... our heroes are on the run after that gaffe that happened in Shadows of Asphodel. The adventure in STORMS OF LAZARUS is good, I love their airborne collision with the Russians, the clockwork gadgets involved, and that dragon was simply intimidating and awe inspiring!
The romance between Ardis and Wendel are developing nicely, but not without minor problems. You won't find Drama here, our couple have a fair understanding of each other so it's all flowing smoothly. It's very normal, no orchestrated conflicts just to add tension which I love. Ardis and Wendel already have a lot of things on their plate, they don't really need excessive relationship issues atm.
That said, I was hoping for theatrics on the supernatural front. I want gasp-inducing moments especially during fights like when Ardis weilds her enchanted blade. I want goosebumps when Wendel raises the dead, the atmosphere crackling with the power of necromancy. I want my heart to swell when the archmages exercise their magic. I want to be affected when something supernatural happens in this world. Currently it's easily missed so I'm hoping for more epic battles in the future.
The plot and respective character arcs in STORMS OF LAZARUS are moving along nicely. I'm now lookin for more oomph since we're already acclimated to the world and premise so it's time to dig deep and add depth to the already fascinating landscape. Fingers crossed I get my wish in book 3!
