YA Fantasy | Paranormal Romance

As reporters chasing rumors of a stolen shipment of Civil War gold descend on Watson Island, Barrie Watson discovers more is buried at Colesworth Place than treasure. A mysterious, magical man claims the key to the Watson and Beaufort gifts and the Colesworth curse also lies beneath the mansion, and Barrie has no option but to help him find it. While she and Eight Beaufort struggle to make sense of the escalating danger and their growing feelings for each other, Barrie must decide not only whom to trust, but which gift is more reliable—Eight’s or her own. With the fate of the founding families at stake, she has to choose between what she feels deep in her heart and what will keep her loved ones safe.

Help me welcome Martina Boone today at Talk Supe to share with us what's it's like to be Barrie Watson for a day. There's also a giveaway at the end plus more opportunities for you to win amazing book prizes.

Something Wicked Rises started this week, this is but one piece of many. Check it!

Thanks so much for having me on the blog today! Doing character profiles is a lot of fun! I spend weeks figuring out characters before I write, and then discovering or rediscovering (or arguing with them!) as I'm writing.

Barrie Watson is one of my favorites. She's strong, but all she sees is her weakness. In Compulsion, she arrives on Watson Island knowing nothing about magic, despite the fact that she has a family gift for finding lost things. She's never thought of that as magic, more like an often uncomfortable quirk, and not only can she find lost things, she has to find them and return them to their owners or she gets a splitting headache.

She also knows nothing about the plantation her family has owned for the past 300 years because her mother ran away from before Barrie was born. Barrie discovers all of this along with the reader, and as she finds information, she also finds herself getting into danger. Some people want her to use her gift to find things for them while other people definitely do not want her to find certain things.

She also finds herself drawn to the boy from the plantation across the river. Eight Beaufort also has a magical gift. He knows what people want. But the flip side of that is that he is compelled to give it to them. So basically, Barrie is drawn to Eight because he's the lost part of her, the person who makes her complete. But she doesn't trust that. When she comes to the plantation, the last thing she wants to do is fall in love with someone, but she finds herself drawn to him, even though she knows he's leaving for college and is only going to break her heart. They go through a LOT together in a short amount of time, and apart from all the magical aspects of their relationship, they develop an amazing relationship based on friendship and respect.

In PERSUASION, Eight decides to stay on Watson Island. But Barrie doesn't know if that's because he wants to stay for her sake, or whether he's staying because she wants him to stay. To him, that doesn't matter because he knows he cares for her, but it matters to Barrie because she didn't have much of a relationship with her mother and she's not very good at believing anyone can love her for herself.

The problem, as she soon discovers, is that while her gift and her own feelings are telling her that she and Eight are supposed to be together, she discovers that because of their magical gifts, there is no way that they can be together. Which means, she has to choose between her gift and his--between her gift and her feelings. And even that is not so simple.

That's pretty much a day in the life of Barrie. She has a lot to navigate all that. Also in PERSUASION, she's determined to break the magical curse on her cousin's family, which means finding some buried Civil War treasure, figuring out what her cousin is up to--Cassie is always up to something--maneuvering around ghost chasers and treasure hunters, starting a restaurant, and figuring out whether the magician who showed up and has a habit of turning into a raven is up to no good or whether his intentions are really what he claims. Oh, and she raises the ghost of a house by accident. Did I mention the ghost house?

By the end of PERSUASION, Barrie could really use a vacation. Too bad she's got to dive right into Illusion and danger that's getting even worse!

Martina Boone is the author of the romantic Southern Gothic Heirs of Watson Island trilogy from Simon & Schuster/Simon Pulse, including COMPULSION, described as Romeo and Juliet meets The Raven Boys meets Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and PERSUASION, which will be out October 27, 2015

    1. Or when they interview their characters (themselves). Witnessing an internal monologue that has facets is a fascinating scenario for me.

  18. Her gift of finding lost things sounds like a fun gift for a book character to have! And pretty original, I only encountered that once before. Sounds like there is a lot going on in Barrie Watson her life.
