Library Round-up: Night Broken, Half A King, & The Diviners

TGIF!
After yearS, I paid my local library a visit and those are my loot! Sigh, I missed the smell and feel of my church. I'll make it a point to support it more. Meanwhile, below are my mini-reviews for my borrows.

Night Broken by Patricia Briggs | Mercedes Thompson 8
Urban Fantasy | March 11, 2014 | Ace
Goodreads | Amazon

Finally I'm caught up with Mercy and all the happenings in the Columbia Basin Pack! Goddamn, Night Broken, sucked me in 100%. Thanks to all your reviews, I was forewarned about The Christy situation, but even with advance notice. Adam's ex-wife still got under my skin. There's nothing like ex-drama to rile us up, right?

Totally LOVED Night Broken to pieces. I was just wondering if Christy has fae blood because she has Adam and the pack wrapped in her itsy bitsy finger. Also, Patricia Briggs is way better than me if Mercy is channeling her during the more difficult moments with Christy. If it were me, I'd totally go ballistic, rip Christy's face and make her eat it. Aside from the emotionally affecting parts, Night Broken is packed with fantastic action, go Mercy! Also, How gooey is her and Adam's moments? Oh lawd! You don't need a good sex scene (although I wouldn't mind) to appreciate how much these two love each other. #mustread

Half A King by Joe Abercrombie | Joe Abercrombie
High Fantasy | July 15, 2014 | Del Rey

Going against the grain here because Half A King didn't captivate or pull me in from the get-go. It took me DAYS to read 23 pages, I read all my Goodreads friends' reviews just to motivate me that Half A King is worth my time. I gave it another try and it took e 12 hours to read 3 pages. That's when I gave up and realized the book isn't for me. I know it's not a slump because I breezed through Menagerie by Rachel Vincent without a hitch.

That said, I'm not ready to give up yet. Maybe the timing is off, I'm determined to get to know Prince Yarvi and his reign better. I'll revisit Joe Abercrombie's book at a later time.

The Diviners by Libba Bray | The Diviners 1
YA Historical-Supernatural | September 18, 2012 | Little Brown Books

Currently reading The Diviners. I'm interested so far, the book is very pretty, and it's a chunky book (578 pages!) so I'm guessing I'll be reading it throughout the weekend. I have high hopes for The Diviners, it does seem like the kind of fantasy, albeit YA, that I can get lost in. I love the occult and I'm feeling Libba Bray's writing voice so far. Fingers crossed I'll love it.

How about you, what's on your weekend shelf?

  2. Ahhh ... a "Christy situation," I'm sure that was a bitch. ;) I haven't been to the library since my son's 5th grade report on Kansas.

  7. Yes Braine I agree with others walk away, maybe timing is not right or maybe the book just doesn't do it for you. Not every book is for every reader. Happy Weekend, I'm right in the middle of my contracted reviews.

  8. Ya for getting caught up on Mercy. I love the Mercy series and well I loved Night Broken. At times I wanted to snake Adams x around. I never thought about the fae blood, interesting idea for her.

  9. Sorry about the DNF, I had one this week too. I'm gonna give Mercy a try one of these days, but for now I'll go with Kate Daniels.

  10. Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who hasn't caught the first Diviners train, lol :) Also, now I'm completely uncertain about investing in Half a King... Gah! Happy weekend, lovely :)

  12. I just recently visited the library after a two month long absence and holy cow was it such a relief! I missed it, but it is so tempting to get too many books than I have time to read!

  16. Some good loot! I so need to catch up with Mercy Thompson series! I'm so behind and this looks so good! I did love Half a King and I'm on the latest one now. Hope you can get into it at another time, but sometimes a book or series isn't for everyone. I also need to read the Diviners.

  20. The Diviners thoroughly gave me the creeps; somehow I always ended up reading the scariest parts (at least to my scaredy cat self) at night, lol. Hope you're still enjoying it! :D

  21. I visited the library a lot when I was younger when it was still free, but eventually switched to buying books instead so I could put them on my shelves. Now you have to pay for library membership and I mostly read english books, which they don't have or only a small selection.
That patricia Briggs book sounds good. I have the first book in the series on my to-read list, but haven't gotten aroudn to buying a copy yet. I am sorry to hear half a King didn't work for you.

    1. Why?? Why do you need to pay for a library membership? Reading should be free!

  22. Oh no. Sorry about Joe Abercrombie's book. I've been curious about this series. I liked the grit of his adult series (which I still have one book to read yet.)

  23. Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed the pilgrimage, Braine. ;) I am hoping to get caught up on Mercy over the next two months myself. I'm 2 behind. It made me frown that Half a King didn't work for you. It's on my TBR... And Lexxie really enjoyed The Diviners so I'm hoping you'll end up loving it. :) I just finished a Victoria Dahl - it was fabulous! Hope you're having a great week!
