Loved It: Getting Wilde by Jenn Stark

Series: Immortal Vegas 1
Format: eGalley
Release Date: August 18, 2015
Publisher: Elewyn Publishing
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Using her well-worn Tarot deck, magical-artifacts hunter Sara Wilde can find anything—for a price. And the price had better be right, since she needs to finance her own personal mission to rescue several young psychics recently sold on the paranormal black market.

Enter Sara’s most mysterious client and occasional lover, the wickedly sexy Magician, with a job that could yield the ultimate payday. All she’ll have to do is get behind Vatican walls… and steal the Devil himself.

But play with the Devil and you’re bound to get burned.

Pressure mounts for Sara to join the Magician’s ancient and mysterious Arcana Council, as militant forces unleashed by even darker powers seek to destroy all magic—including the young psychics Sara is desperate to keep safe. The Council may be their only hope... but it could also expose Sara’s own dark past.

From the twisting catacombs of Rome to the neon streets of Vegas, Sara confronts ancient enemies, powerful demigods, a roiling magical underworld about to explode... and immortal passions that might require the ultimate sacrifice. But oh, what a way to go.

No matter how the cards play out, things are about to get Wilde.

Before anything else, I strongly suggest y'all grab One Wilde Night, because it's FREE, and the prequel to the series. It gives you a good sense of who Sara Wilde is, the world she's part of, and what she does for a living. It's a great sampler to help you decide if Immortal Vegas, is the right series for you. Although I'm sure that Jenn Stark will get you hooked from the get go especially if urban fantasy is your favorite genre. Why?

Because Sara Wilde is badass! Sara's a bit mysterious as of now, we don't know much about her aside from who she is now. She's a collector/bounty hunter of magical artifacts and is currently employed by The Magician, magician being that dude in the tarot deck. Speaking of, Sara uses tarot cards as a guide to her (mis)adventures. This is my favorite part of the whole myth/world building btw, because I love tarot cards and I love tarot readings, so to have a heroine that can accurately read a deck, and is involved in the actual world of Arcana is nothing short of pure awesomeness for me.

The myth and world building of GETTING WILDE is very straightforward, and it continues to build as the story moves along. Again, the baseline are the characters in the Tarot deck, and they're moving in the shadows side by side with us mortals. It's very covert, lots of action and magic, lots of scheming, and suffice to say they're a bunch of loonies.

Let me talk about The Magician aka Armaeus Bertrand, the current leader of the Arcana council for a bit. The dude is simply irresistible. Literally. He has certain abilities that can turn up the sexy in a snap, but the title isn't undeserved because Armaeus is like sex on a stick. Like a melting popsicle on a hot Summer day and all you want to do is just lick him... *snaps off reverie* He reminds me a lot of V'Lane, his mere presence alone can make you go mad with lust. If you're lucky, you might even pass out. Ha!

GETTING WILDE is a great start to a brand new series. It's very inventive, tense in the right places, full of attitude, fast paced, and the plot is well developed. Immortal Vegas is shaping up to be another cool urban fantasy show. However, there were moments where I felt lost, apparently a lot of things happened since ONE WILDE NIGHT so there were instances where I felt like an outsider to a private joke. It wasn't a plot hole per se, but I would've liked for JStark to have bridged that gap, or disregarded the premise of previous meetings altogether, so that the readers wouldn't feel like we lost something.

It sounds like a great series and the inclusion of tarot decks sounds original. I haven't read many books where tarot cards play a role. The story and world building sounds well done. Great Review!
