Loved It: Harmonized by Mary Behre

Series: Tidewater 2.5
Format: eGalley
Release Date: July 21, 2015
Publisher: Berkley
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Paranormal | Romantic Suspense

After nearly dying on assignment, Tidewater police officer Zig Harmon has been awarded the Silver Star and desk duty. But handling every case that walks through the door while his entire department is out hunting a serial killer is nothing compared to dealing with his former flame, Karma De La Cruz.

As much as she hates it, Karma knows that her best chance of finding the kidnapped baby haunting her visions is the man she once left behind. Forced to work together, Karma and Zig start to realize that they may have let go of something incredible. But now, time is running out, both for the missing infant and for their chance to start again...

Everything that you love about Tidewater, or a romantic suspense with a hint of paranormal for that matter, is compressed in this novella. Shorties can be tricky to pull off, some feels incomplete, others feel rushed, while some manage to balance all the elements and deliver a great and satisfying story.

HARMONIZED isn't about Jules or her sisters, although she and Seth made a cameo. It's a little story about a girl who can see auras, a lovesick cop, and a lost baby. I can't say I connected to either Karma (cool name btw) and Zig, the novella was too short for me to get invested in their characters. They're likable enough, and they were sincere in their feelings and intentions. It also helped that these two had history together so an insta-love device was avoided.

HARMONIZED is a good in-between read, tide us fans over, or whet our appetites some more, in time for Energized. Tidewater isn't your usual paranormal romantic suspense in that it features characters with psychic abilities and how they help lawmen solve crimes and such. This series is sexy, entertaining, funny, it's no surprised a lot of readers are hooked on the series, and eagerly anticipate every installment.

    1. Right? It's so badass when someone asks your name and you answer with "I'm Karma,". WTF?!

    1. I usually don't read novellas myself, but when it's part of a series, I tend to pick it up out of curiosity.

  10. I don't think I have read a paranormal suspense book so far, it sounds like a fun genre. Just like you I often have the problem with short stories that they feel too rushed, alhough when they are part of a larger series I usually will read them and enjoy them. It definitely helps if the characters already know each other, that helps avoid the insta love and makes the relationship feel less rushed even though things happen fast as they already know each other. Great review!

    1. Yup, and having history enriches the story even further. Makes things more emotional.

    1. Sometimes the wait between volumes is hard! You either forget the story arc or lose interest entirely. These little novellas help stoke the fire of interest.

  17. "a girl who can see auras, a lovesick cop, and a lost baby" sounds like a good recipe for a full-length novel. I'd read that!

  18. Oh great it's fun! I liked book 1 but I haven't read the others yet. I really should try. I thought this one was book 3 but it's nice to know it's a novella.

  19. I do believe I have the first book on my wishlist. Novellas can be tricky with not adding enough depth to the characters. I'm sure I'll still read it though when the times comes.
