Liked It: Flight from Death by Yasmine Galenorn

Format: Paperback
Release Date: July 7, 2015
Publisher: Berkley

Genre: Urban Fantasy

From New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn comes an all-new series set in the realm of her Otherworld novels.

I’m Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Now, not only do I have to adapt to Earthside culture, but every time I turn around, somebody’s trying to kill us. And worse, Alex is as gorgeous as he is exasperating. But you know what they say: All’s fair in love and bounty hunting…

When an old friend of Alex contacts him about a haunting at the High Tide Bed & Breakfast in Port Townsend, Washington, we think we’re on a simple ghost hunt. But our investigation quickly transforms into a deadly fight as we uncover an eighty-year-old murder, a cursed house, and a dark force trapping the spirits within. To stop impending disaster we must break the curse and lay the angry spirits to rest.

Finally a dragon who wasn't shy in showing her true self to us. And finally, I got to sample Yasmine Galenorn's fiction! Admittedly, I am DROWNING in tried, tested, and fantastic long standing urban fantasy and paranormal series. So much so that I just take note of the authors and hold off doing research on their series up until I can actually find the time to dive in and binge.

Thankfully, YGalenorn has FLIGHT FROM DEATH, book 1 to her new series, Fly by Night, starring a blue dragon on exile, Shimmer, and her boss/lover, Alex, who is a vampire. The backstory is cleverly interspersed with the main story so we get a good grasp of who Shimmer is how she ended up Earthside. The myth isn't very detailed, maybe it'll be explained more in the next book? Aside from Shimmer's world and dragon heirarchy, the Supes are pretty basic and I'm assuming they're of the "regular" kind. The paranormals didn't exhibit any special abilities aside from the usual so I guess the vamps, werewolves, etc. didn't require more page time at this point to avoid redundancy.

The main plot of FLIGHT FROM DEATH is a ghost haunting. It's exciting enough because the case got escalated to gypsy curses and fae magic. YGalenorn added new-ish Supes in the scene as an added interest making the adventure more chaotic. The characters are a hodgepodge of paranormals too! There be werewolves, a djinn, witches, and a spiritwalker for starters. Individually, Shimmer & Co. are likable enough, and YGalenorn fleshed them out really well in a way that they all stand out.

FLIGHT FROM DEATH is a very easy novel. Easy to read because of the pace, easy to get acclimated to, even the romance is easy. Not in an insta-love kind of way, but there's already something between Shimmer and Alex so it wasn't a surprise when they became a couple . There's no romantic tension, snarky banters, or anything of the sort to build that one up. That said, Shimmer and Alex came across as very ordinary. Like I said, they're likable but they didn't wow me either. Shimmer might be a dragon but she doesn't have a badass attitude like the usual UF heroine. Which is fine, I just wanted more from my heroine. As for Alex, I don't mind if he's not an "Alpha", but I was hoping that he'd be swoony at least. At this point, I feel detached from them, but I sure would want to know more about Shimmer and this new fantastical world. Chalking this to a medium start which hopefully will go full throttle in book 2.

    1. Some books I've read hold back on the dragons. It's not the case here!

  2. Good to hear it was an easy read even if Alex wasn't alpha or even as swoony as you'd like

    1. He dosn't have to be an Alpha, I just wanted him to make an impact, you know what I mean? More memorable...

  8. Yeah, I'm not good with ordinary characters either :) Give me extremes, good or bad, give me quirky, madcap, shady, ambiguous - anything but ordinary, lol. Still, a medium start is better than a weak one, isn't it? See? This is seeing the half full of a half-empty glass, lol. Which is something I genuinely suck at ;) Have an awesome weekend!

    1. I agree! This is how I felt with Dreamfever and Dark Lover. Slow starts then it built up to an awesome series!

  9. Oh I want to read this one! I love dragon books. I do think that sometimes UF is often slow to take off so the first books aren't always the best. Hopefully you will love #2 more. :)

    1. That's true which is why I'm holding off judgment for the series until I've read book 2.

  11. I've not picked up a YGalenorm book yet, but I have had her on my raider and TBR. Dragon's I love, so ya, I need to try this and it's book one always good. ^_^

  12. I haven't read a lot of drgaon shifter books so far and the ones I did read were okay. A dragon and a vamprie sounds like it would make for a unique romance! And it seems like there is a nice combination of unique-ish paranormals. Although while I like it when books include multiple paranormals, it can be difficult to learn enough about them all, but it doesn't sound like that was an issue here. I am sorry to hear the characters and romance fell a bit flat :(. Great review!

  14. I've wanted to try her books, but I'm buried under several other series that I need to get caught up. A new series does tempt one.

  15. Although this didn't blow you away, sometimes an easy read it just nice and it sounds like it may work out to be a decent series.

  25. I've been wanting to get into her other series something terrible. But then I see all the books in that series and cringe as I don't think I can get through them all fast enough. But to see a new series and a dragon! Now, you have caught my eye. Sounds like a good start and something to grow from. :) Thank you.
