Quick Hits: Wolf Bride by Elizabeth Moss + The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest by Melanie Dickerson

Wolf Bride | Lust in the Tudor Court 1 | Elizabeth Moss
Erotic Historical Romance | Sourcebooks Casablanca | May 5, 2015
Bloggy Friends' Review: Nocturnal Book Reviews | Book Swoon

I was so excited to read WOLF BRIDE because I love the Tudor Court and anything that has to do with Henry VIII. It was also an added incentive that Lust in the Tudor Court was erotic historical romance and I sure could use a big dose of sexy in my life.

Sadly, WOLF BRIDE wasn't what I hoped for. I wasn't regaled with descriptions of court life, the wardrobe, the silly protocols as the heroine, Eloise Tyrell, was so close to King Henry and Queen Anne. Instead I had pages and pages of sex, angst, more sex, zero courtship, and convoluted conflicts! I almost DNF'd this one but I was on the 88% mark and thought I might as well finish it since I made it that far. But boy was it a laborious 12%. Lord Wolf was a jackass and emotionally handicappped, and he was not sexy (to me at least) at all. In fact, I never understood his motivations and decision making process which further annoyed me. As for Eloise, the girl needs some personality (or a brain) and sass. She obeyed Wolf well but it's hard to appreciate that when she's been obedience throughout the novel. Nope, WOLF BRIDE isn't for me.

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest | Medieval Fairy Tale Romance 1 | Emily Dickerson
Fairy Tale Retelling | Thomas Nelson | May 12, 2015

THE HUNTRESS OF THORNBECK FOREST by Emily Dickerson is a mash-up of Swan Lake and Robin Hood. I love the premise of this YA novel, after all, Robin of Locksley and the accursed Odette are two of my favorite fictional characters.

I can't help but feel insecure about not finishing THE HUNTRESS OF THORNBECK FOREST because a lot of people loved it! Almost half way through the novel I felt it was sorely missing something. For example, at this point, I feel we should've seen Odette in full Huntress mode. Instead all I got were her arrows left in the forest as clue for Jorgen, the forester and Odette's love interest. It's so bland and though we know that Odette and Jorgen are at odds, there's barely any tension between the two.

But please don't take my word for it. A lot of people in Goodreads LOVED THE HUNTRESS OF THORNBECK FOREST so it might be one of those it's not you, it'e me kind of thing, you know? Give it a go, you might end up liking this title more than I did.

  3. Braine, My motto is life's too short to read a bad book and yes it's also true that no two people read the same book either. Sorry you didn't enjoy these and more sorry that you can't reload the wasted hours. LOL Have a Good Weekend

    1. I don't delight when I dislike a book. It's harder to explain why it sucked for me than to mad gush about it.. especially Dickerson's book. Everyone seemed to love it in GR!

  4. Aw sorry to hear that Wolf Man wasn't what you'd hope

  5. Both sound interesting, although I'll give the mindless sex in the first one a meh. The second one sounds more like my type of book :) But opinions on it differ, so I'm not sure. There's a lot of potential though. Loving your quick hits as always :) Enjoy your weekend! xx

  6. Seems like across the board Wolf Bride has been a big miss for bloggers I know :/ I think you're the 4th or 5th now. Such a beautiful cover. I nearly got sucked in but was too busy. Very okay with that.

    1. So sad! You know I'm trying to revisit historical romance that's why I joined your challenge to give me that extra push. Goodness gracious!

  9. I am sorry to hear Wolf Bride wans't what you're hoped for, it's always sad when a book turns out different than expected. I read another reveiw of this book recently and I don't think I'll be picking this one up. Sounds like it has too much sex and drama and too less story and historical aspects
I don't like DNFíng a book, but sometimes a book just doesn't work for you and it's better to put it down than trudge onwards.

    1. I don't mind steamy reads but it has to be balanced. Their Wedding Night/Day was like three chapters? It doesn't last that long LOL

  10. Sorry that you ended up DNF'ing both of these. I love the Robin Hood legend, too, but I've yet to find a YA retelling that I'm head over heels for. Hope your next read is more of a page turner!

    1. Oof, like I said, a lot of people loved Huntress so it might be me. Give it a go if you have it in your library, you might enjoy it better than I did.

    1. She made it too angsty and skipped the staple historical romance bits. I should ask you next time which historical author to try.

  13. I started chuckling as I read your take on Wolf Bride and glanced over at my unsolicited review copy still sitting on the shelf. I just haven't had the time to pick it up and you're like the fourth reviewer to share similar thoughts so I'm still in no hurry for a steamy read with little plot or likeable characters.

I didn't know of this other one and I would have grabbed it up quick b/c of the cross between those stories which are both hits for me. Bummer it didn't grab you.

    1. I was skeptical with the other reviews, I was hopeful my experience would be different as I was enjoying WB til the 60% mark. It just stopped making sense for me after they got married and Wolf did all those stupid stuff.

  15. Oh man. Wolf Bride is one that I've seen floating around a lot. The cover is pretty and I always thought about getting a copy but there was just something about the synopsis that didn't jive with me. Glad I skipped it.

  17. I saw the covers first and I was like ooooh, they're both so pretty! I was interested with the Wolf Bride too because I'm fascinated with the Tudor Court too. Too bad it's just pages and pages of sex. I mean, we know it's going to be more erotic than most but I think we're interested with this because of the history and court life with a dash of steam. Sorry both books didn't work out for you Braine! I hope your next read is better :)

  19. I am currently reading Wolf Bride, and like you I am struggling to finish. I feel the same about Eloise. She needs to show the personality that was commented about. I also do not like Lord Wolf, like one minute he is all over her- but then so cold. Is he cold or what?
It has taken me a good 4 days just to get to 62%, I would normally be done by now.

  20. Oof! I'm sorry neither of this did a thing for you, Braine. I was excited about Wolf Bride myself - for all the same reasons you were. Guess what I'm removing from my tbr? I really hope you've found something sizzling to read, girl! XO

  21. I'm sorry neither of these worked for you Braine. I haven't read any of these myself by why is it that crap books seem to come in groups? LOL
    Have a good one.

  22. Ohhhh dear, Wolf Bride sounds like it was all about the sex but not much development! ANd too bad that Huntress sounds incredibly bland.
