There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan.

With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bulls-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

Happy Valentine's Day, Supies!
I love holidays, but if you're a single lady like moi, you either love or hate "hearts" day. I hate it.

Lee's so kind to help me make this day a bloody one. What better way to celebrate V-Day than with an assassin who won't think twice in decorating a lovely ballroom with different shades of red?

Let the body count begin!

*This is part 2 of the review,
you may find the first part over at She-Wolf Reads*

TS: Did you tear up? Man, I found myself mimicking Owen at one point, my hand to my chest because of Gin and what Madeline has put her through! For a minute there, I was doubtful she’ll make it whole.

SWR: Yes, the tension was intense. For the first time in a long time I really couldn’t see how Gin would make it out of this one. And the emotions. Intense, too. When Owen didn’t believe it was true...let’s just say, I got teary. It was emotional to say the least. And I love how everyone banded together for that final confrontation. Do you think Emery will come back at some point? And will Jonah get what’s coming to him?

TS: Oh my gawd! When they were in Jojo’s kitchen and Owen was the only steadfast person there… waaahh!! I’m so happy Gin heard his declaration! I think Emery will come back, that’s for sure. As for Jonah, he’s like a cockroach! LOL

Speaking of which, did you read the preview for the Spider’s Trap? Gin was hinting of her next aggressor being “familiar”. Do you think that’s Emery? I’m thinking it’s someone else, like someone we’ve met in the older books.

SWR: No, didn’t read the preview. It would be awesome if it ends up being someone other than Emery. A flash from the past would be an interesting surprise, keeping Emery as an unknown in the background until the time is right.

TS: That's true. I want Emery to stay on reserve for now as well.

I love the twist in BLACK WIDOW and Madeline’s style. I was half expecting her to be like Mab, what I did NOT expect was her finesse.

SWR: Finesse and power. She packed some serious juice! What do you think of Gin’s new role as queen of the underworld? I wonder where that road will take her!

TS: Honestly, I’m not sold on this idea. Gin has always been outside the circle. Operating on her own rules, etc. I was hoping she’ll go back to being a hired assassin, get out of Ashland and hunt other types of bad guys. How about you, do you like this new development?

SWR: More curious than anything else. I’m not sure I see Gin as running the Ashland underworld due to her need for a low key existence. But, honestly, unless she wants people to keep trying to kill her, there really is no other choice. I’m open to this new direction.

My final verdict is 4.5 howls. BLACK WIDOW is THE book in terms of injecting some new energy into this series. I loved the action, the emotion, and the character interaction. This has me excited for the next in the series. What’s your final take, Braine?

TS: I'm giving BLACK WIDOW 5 caulrons! We've waited too long for this and I'm only too happy it wasn't in vain. And like you, Gin Blanco with the help of Madeline Monroe, revived my interest for the series. Now that we're caught up, the wait for Spider's Trap is going to be a long one.

  1. *manages a wave*
Been catching up on blogs for 2 hours ;)

  2. Love hearing you both loving Black Widow as much as I did. Owen was so freaking awesome, he's the only one who knew Gin was alive. And I really didn't know how Gin was going to make it out of this one either. Freaking scary as crap.

  3. I have yet to read this series, but I love heroins redecorating ballrooms their way :) Great two-hands written review !

  4. It's so wonderful that after so many books you're loving that much this series. I've only read book 1 but I have book 2 and 3 in French, so one day I'm sure I'll read them... I'm sooooooooo late ! Great review!

  5. Loved this one! I get so worked up about the bad guy's abilities and how Gin is going to overcome them. Spider's Trap is going to be AWESOME!

  6. I so need to get caught up on this series! I am trying though, I really am!

  7. Loved this one as well. Now I'm wondering what is going to happen next!

  8. Awesome covers and great interview. Happy reading.
