Suped Up: Jinn and Juice by Nicole Peeler

Series: The Jinni 1
Format: eGalley
Release Date: November 25, 2014
Publisher: Orbit
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Cursed to be a jinni for a thousand years, Leila nears the end of her servitude—only to be bound once again against her will. Will she risk all to be human?

Born in ancient Persia, Leila turned to her house Jinni, Kouros, for help escaping an arranged marriage. Kouros did make it impossible for her to marry—by cursing Leila to live a thousand years as a Jinni herself.

If she can remain unBound, Leila's curse will soon be over. But Ozan Sawyer, a Magi with the ability to See, Call, and Bind jinn has other plans. Oz needs Leila to help him penetrate Pittsburgh's steel-soaked magic, a juice potent but poisonous to supernatural creatures, in order to find a missing girl with her own mysterious connection to Kouros. Unfortunately for Leila, becoming Bound to Oz may risk more than just her chance to be human once more—it could risk her very soul...

Jinn and Juice is the first in a new series by fantasy writer, Nicole Peeler, set in a world of immortal curses, powerful jinni and belly dancing.

Nicole Peeler's been on my hit list for a long time, and as her Jane True series is quite long for me to keep up with at this point. My next best bet is her new series, The Jinni. I was disappointed for missing it on its original release last year, and I'm very grateful that Orbit decided to re-release JINN AND JUICE otherwise it might have remained on my wishlist.

JINN AND JUICE is as epic as it can get. Days away from breaking her jinni curse, Leila was Bound last minute by Magi, Ozan Sawyer, so she can help him find his friend, Tamina. But before Leila (Lyla) and Oz start their search and rescue operation, a shit storm of epic proportions commence and it all points to Leila's maker, Kouros. Turns out Kouros, who's been MIA for a millenia, is hatching an insidious plan while imprisoned far side of Sideways (an other realm), and he's about to wreak his jinn fire on Leila and her close circle of friends. Question is, how can she defeat an all powerful being when Leila is basically a halfling?

JINN AND JUICE is so good y'all! I still have contact high! It's so good, The Jinni 1 is one of those books that scrambled my head. The characters are diverse in both appearances and creature classification. So Lyla is a jinn, Oz is a Magi, then there's an oracle, a succubus, naga, ogre, Russians, Persians, Americans, Sidhe! Represent! I love each and every one of them especially Lyla and Oz. So I love how Lyla's not your super charged badass girl, guns blazing, I-will-tear-your-face-if-you-look-at-me-wrong type of heroine. Aside from being a very special jinn, Lyla's level headed, can fight when the need arise, snarky, very clever, and very loyal to her friends. She's very likable and super relatable despite being an immortal.

On to Ozan Sawyer! This man is so swoony hence he gets his own paragraph. I have to admit, I've been desensitized by hunky male leads. It's been one Alpha after the other and honestly, they're starting to blend together. That's why I respond to the betas more, the nerds, the sidekicks, the bestfriend. Now Oz may be a beta, but he's no chopped liver either. He's very compassionate, loyal like Lyla, and understands the meaning of what a life debt is and will bend over backwards to pay it in full. What I love most about Oz is he didn't take advantage of Lyla when emotions are high. He wanted to win Lyla fair and square, Oz wants to make sure that Lylla will have and take him of her own accord and not because she's his jinni.

[While in the middle making out wherein Lyla wants to be Mastered by Oz *wink wink*]
I want you Lyla... but not when you're Bound to me. I meant what I said about wanting to know I'm yours by your own choice.
My panties just about melted right there. A gentleman in UF? They're as rare as unicorns.

JINN AND JUICE is superb! This is my first NPeeler, and because I loved her writing so much as well as her crazy imagination, I'm going to dive in to Jane True to tide me over til the next Jinni installment comes. I can't say enough good things about this book except READ IT. EXPERIENCE IT. BE BLOWN OVER. HAVE FUN. READ IT AGAIN.

  3. OOooh nice! I was waiting for the paperback version of this one because I'm weird and like my books real! I LOVED the Jane True series so I expect this one to be just as incredible and snarky and fun and sexy and it sounds like it's exactly that! I highly recommend the Jane books because they're a lot of fun too! Great review!

That happens to me a lot too! I was hoping the cover for this series would be similar to her Jane True. The cover art for those are so pretty, this is so... burlesque, like Layla LOL

  8. Aside from series, I don't think I've ever read a book where the main character was a beta. They are always Alphas. This sounds like a great book. I've seen it floating around but was never really sure if it's for me. Your review convinced me. ;)

  12. This sounds really amazing, Braine! I love that Leila is a jinni, and that she has freedom at her fingertips only to have it snatched away. I can't wait to see how she deals with that, and if she'll be of any help at all to the guy who re-binds her :)
    I hope you've had a great week.
