In Cry Wolf, New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs started a new urban fantasy series set in the world of Mercy Thompson -- but with rules of its own. Now, read "Alpha and Omega," the novella that inspired the new series, and see how it all began...Anna Latham never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack... and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the Chicago pack, she's learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. But when she discovers wrongdoing in her pack, she has to go above her Alpha's head to ask for help.Charles Cornick is the son -- and enforcer -- of the leader of the North American werewolves. Now his father has sent him to Chicago to clean up a problem there. Charles never expected to find Anna, a rare Omega wolf -- and he certainly never expected to recognize her as his mate...

Before you pick up the series you HAVE to read the novella first. There are "holes" in book 1 that might baffle you and the answers are here in Alpha and Omega the companion novella to Cry Wolf.
Here we witness how Anna and Charles first met and how Brother Wolf (Charles' nickname for his wolf) chose Anna to be his mate. We are told the tale of Anna's traumatic experience in the Chicago pack under the the weak Alpha Leo and his manic mate, Isabelle.
The wolf wanted to bed her and claim her as his own.
Anna was Changed against her will and wasn't oriented on the consequences of being a Werewolf like not being able to have children for example. On top of that Anna was demoralized, assaulted, raped and passed around like a whore in Leo's pack. That factoid coupled with Anna's battered look made Charles protective of Anna.
He'd have to call his brother, Samuel,, and tell him that he'd finally learned that his face wouldn't crack if he smiled. all it had taken to teach him was an Omega werewolf.
Charles' original mission was to investigate suspicious activities happening in Chicago but his last minute rendezvous with Anna proved to be serendipitous for them both. I for one was squealing and giggling like a high school girl in this three chapter novella. Charles is all Male like his father Bran, he's had previous dalliances with other women but no one made him and his wolf feel the way Anna made him feel.
Here are my favorite parts mostly Charles' dialogue with Anna:
My wolf is more interested in courting you than in asserting his dominance
But you are mine, and the thought of you hurt, of being able to do nothing about it, is an anger that even an Omega wolf cannot easily soothe.
If you had let me, he said, I'd have courted you gently and won your heart.
I don't like sex, wasn't enthusiastic before the Change. And after being passed around like a whore for a year, until Isabelle put a stop to it, I like it even less. But if I am yours, then you damned well are going to be mine. [Anna]
I promise you will enjoy sex with me...
Too bad that part of the story (in detail) will never see the light of day.
I loved this book. Unfortunately I read it before I ever started the Mercy Thompson series so it made that whole thing a little out of order lol
ReplyDeleteThat's fine because the events of the next books happens side by side with Mercy's and it doesn't crossover aside from Sam, you'll be fine.
DeleteHi Braine,
ReplyDeleteGreat review!! I haven't read these, but I really want to!! ;)
I have it on my Kindle, let me know and I'll lend it to you just to see if you'll like the series.
DeleteWoohoo! So happy you are reading this! Each one just gets better and better!
ReplyDeleteI very rarely read prequel novellas but there is no way I'm to pass up on this!
DeleteI love this series as much as I love the Mercy Thompson series. I read Mercy first then picked up the Alpha and Omega. I can't get enough of both the series by Patricia Briggs.
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! Amen!
DeleteI can't wait for book 4!
ReplyDeleteBut I must say, I do not like novellas you HAVE TO READ before book 1. feels, not cool
Hahaha. I don't either but it will all make sense once you read this. It's Anna's backstory
DeleteBlodeuedd, in all the short story was written and published first. Party's editor liked it so much she asked Patty to turn it into a series. The series exists because of the novella, not the other way around. Technically, the series is companion to the novella instead of the novella being companion to the series.
DeleteI love this series so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks for helping me clarify, Bea!
DeleteWell I'm not really a fan I confess and I was quite mixed with this one... Glad it was better for you.
ReplyDeleteOh sorry to hear that :(
DeleteShould I read this first? I haven't read any of the series so Im confused as to where to begin..lol..
ReplyDeleteI read a book about a girl who was obsessed with wolfs after she was attacked as a child & i liked it so much i have a feeling ill like this too.
<3
Start with this. It's a good teaser/appetizer so you can decide if it's for you and/or if you want to continue. I love werewolves, they're my favorite paranormal creature
DeleteI loved this one too, Braine! I'm such a fan that I have it in the graphic novel and in novella format. ;)
ReplyDeleteI saw some of the illustrations for the Gn, it looks so cool!
DeleteWell huh. I read book one and don't remember any holes or being confused. Now you have me curious. It's been a few years so maybe I forgot. lol I do need to get the rest of the series read and will pick this one up too. Ugh on that cover though.
ReplyDeleteI did feel a bit "off" when I read Cry Wolf. Anna's background wasn't as detailed as I liked for it to be. I got that here. Anyway, you have another excuse to read PBriggs, grab it!
DeleteOh I really liked those quotes! I love it when a novella delivers. great review!

Thank you Teresa :)
DeleteI definitely would be lost if I read this. I don't even know who Anna and Charles are! I read the first book many moons ago, but I wasn't interested enough to continue. I know this one is a well-loved series. Who knows? Maybe these books would show up in my future. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this, Braine. I'm going to be reading Cry Wolf for a challenge so I'm glad to know this one should be read first. Love that favorite scene you shared...and you're right - it is too bad that scene won't see the light of day. ;)
