Discover Cecy Robson’s sensational Weird Girls series—or return to where the magic first began—with this eBook original prequel novella about four sisters coming to grips with their unique supernatural powers.

Celia Wird shouldn’t possess the ability to transform into a tigress. Her three sisters should never be able to burst into flames, heal wounds, or transform common objects into deadly weapons. And yet they do.

Before they were born, the Wird Sisters were cursed by a spell that was intended to destroy them, not endow them with extraordinary powers. The sisters’ magic is untamed and explosive at best, and time is running out for them to take command.

Vampires have targeted Celia’s sweet, tragically human ex-boyfriend Danny. The sisters rush to his aid, but in order to take down the vamps, first they must face their dark past and break a spell that’s screwing up their powers. Except this curse wasn’t meant to be broken . . . and the witch who cast it isn’t done toying with them yet.

I have been a fan of The Weird Girls since the beginning because how can I not be? It's a smorgasbord of otherworldly creatures with each book filled to the brim with love, magic, and lots of action. Not to mention the leads are actual sisters who was cursed by a family member which resulted to an interesting mix of powers and abilities. The Weird Girls is one paranormal party you won't want to miss if you love reading UF/PNR books that's for sure.

Now I've always wondered WHY the girls were cursed and A CURSED AWAKENED answered my question partially. It's been mentioned in the previous books that the girls' mom was ostracized by her family because she married the "wrong" dude. What made their father the "wrong" man is still murky, all I've gathered so far is that he has the wrong skin color. I feel there's more to it than that because it's too shallow of a reason for it to merit a severe curse plus we live in modern times so that much racial inequity feels too extreme to me. Maybe I'm being naive here but still I feel the punishment doesn't fit the crime?

Regardless, CRobson still delivered a solid novella. The actual breaking of the curse was short but suspenseful with a little ghostly encounter thrown in. And as per usual, it won't be a Weird Girls story without some deadly adventures. A CURSED AWAKENED happened before the girls moved to Lake Tahoe shortly after Celia and Danny broke up. Danny's dad was captured by a mad vampire priestess and Celia and the girls eventually helped Danny save his father from the crazy blood suckers. I liked this part of the story, though brief, because it's adrenalin filled and I like that this thread with the vampire master, Angelo, might get picked up later. That should make for another interesting complication in the future should CRobson decide to reel Angelo back in to the story. After all, what's another mad vamp thrown into the crazy mix that's The Weird Girls?

Excerpt
(from Chapter One)

Shayna scrunched her pixie face when she caught my hardening expression. She abandoned the box she was loading with old clothes and adjusted her sleek black ponytail. “Who was that? And why do you look so down, dude?”
“It was Danny.”
Her grin lit up the dim room. “Danny Matagrano?” I nodded. “How’s he doing?”
“Lousy. Vampires are trying to eat him.”
Emme paused from folding a pair of old sheets, her hands lowering along with her slacking jaw. “How did he . . .” She swallowed hard and tried to speak clearly. “I-I thought those things mostly hung out in the bigger cities. Like New York.”
I shrugged. “I guess they decided to check out Jersey. Either that or they came here specifically for him and his father. He wasn’t clear. All he said was that he needed help.”
Taran continued wrapping knickknacks in newspaper as if I hadn’t spoken. Too bad her swearing under her breath gave away her exact thoughts. “Well, sucks to be him―literally. Send him some garlic, say a couple of Hail Marys on his behalf, and wish him well. This is so not our business. Vampires. Freaking vampires. This goddamn world is so messed up.”
I tucked a strand of my long wavy hair behind my ear. “I told him I’d meet him at the old soccer field in twenty minutes. I can’t just―”
Taran threw her box on the floor with enough force to crack the ceramic trinkets she’d wrapped. She stormed up to me and shoved her face in mine, her blue eyes ablaze with her hidden fire. If I were anyone else, she would have throat-punched me. “Four days, Celia!” she yelled. “That’s the time we have left in this state. Four days and we’re outta here―new life, new jobs, new home. This is not the time to go looking for trouble!”
“I’m not looking for trouble!” I growled.

  18. I actually have this series on my list and am waiting for.. certain things involving the romance to be resolved before diving in and devouring this series!

Admittedly, it does seem a little annoying that the curse was a result of something like color which is bothersome but I am glad you ended up enjoying the novella nevertheless and got some of the answers to your questions!

    Lovely review, Braine!!
