In which we first encounter The Black Diamonds, and follow them into the treacherous confines of a Vampyre nest within the heart of London itself. An adventure which leaves them shaken, and in some instances, forever changed.

And my Steampunk Sundays is back with a brand new steampunk serial, LADY JESSICA: MONSTER HUNTER by Keith Dumble. The title says it all and on Season 1, the Black Diamond slays a coven of vampires a la Vampire Theater (Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice). Heart of the Empire has a good chunk of action to get me engaged, combining it with an adventurous introduction of characters and Keith Dumble gave me enough juice to read on to the next part, or Season, as he calls it.

The Black Diamond consisting of three active members at this point, Lady Jessica, William Flint and Atsu Bara, have complementing characteristics to form and manipulate reader interests. Lady Jessica is the level-headed leader and tactician, Flint is the muscle and eye candy while Atsu is both the comedic relief and wild card of the trio. I like The Black Diamond trifecta, they each have something to offer and each one of them has a distinct voice and personality which is always a plus when reading fantasy that has multiple characters. You don't want anybody to blend with the background.

Onto Lady Jessica McAlpin. I like what she represents, strong yet feminine, brave, cunning and has an eye for detail. She is proving to be quite a soldier and a great leader for her crew plus her combined martial and military skills makes her a badass when it comes to sword fighting and other types of combat. It's too soon to tell but at this point, Lady Jessica feels flat to me. I don't know if it's because she was thrust into adventures right away upon introduction so we only get to see this side of her. And from the looks of it, she's off to a new one with only a beat or two to spare in between. I'd like to meet the "Lady" in the next Season, the soft and alluring woman hiding underneath her petticoats, corsets and gadgets, something to balance off her warrior side and humanize her.

Overall, KDumble is on to something great with the series. I enjoy that he's going via the classic route in terms of monsters. He also kept the action/adventure flowing which translates to an amazing pace. I'm not one for plot driven fantasy books but I'll make an exception this time around. LADY JESSICA: MONSTER HUNTER may have a slow start for me but from the looks of it, the party's just getting started and it's only going to get better.

  1. Maybe I will just wait for more to come ;)

  2. I have to be in the mood to read steampunk. It's usually more about the gadgets and society than character development. Or maybe I haven't read the right ones yet.

  3. I got a few free Steampunk books at RT, I got to go through the pile and see if this one was there (I'm not too familiar with the genre). I know it doesn't sound like it blew you away, but I liking the sound of it. It's only the first, so like that you saw potential here.

  4. I love this feature, I get to discover new stempunks since I'm new to this genre. I just borrowed Bec McMaster's Heart of Iron too...EXCITED.

  5. I've only read a few steampunk books but the ones I've read I've really enjoyed. I still haven't fallen in love with serials yet but I may check this one out when more Seasons/Episodes come out. I'm curious to find out what kind of gadgets they use to kill off all those vampires.

  6. Yeah, I think I'll be waiting for more parts available too. I'm definitely interested, but I rarely read serials in pieces . . .

  7. I hadn't heard of this but I think it's something I might enjoy. I'd definitely wait until more or out though.

  8. Strong and brave are just how I love my main characters
