Needs Work: The Fetish Queen: Reborn by Nicole Camden

Series: The Fetish Queen Part 1
Format: eGalley
Release Date: April 1, 2014
Publisher: Pocket Star
Source: Publisher via NetGalley
Genre: Erotica | Contemporary
Newly single and loving every minute, Lille—a.k.a. the Fetish Queen—is unleashed and ready to dominate in the first chapter of the sexy, enticing Fetish Queen series.

Blond, buxom, and bold, pin-up girl Lillehammer Marceaux can get any man she wants, but she leaves her fiancé to move to Florida and run a sex shop called The Fetish Box, owned by her best friend. She immediately clashes with Max Jobman, the rough-hewn tattooed Irishman who owns the local pub. Not a very trusting man, Max is convinced she’s a spoiled beauty who’ll stay just long enough to find a rich husband. He quickly learns that Lille isn’t interested in a husband; she’s focused on making the business a success—but that doesn’t stop her from thinking about what an excellent lover Max will make…

What neither Max nor Lille realizes is that her efforts to become the Fetish Queen, which include making a type of reality show, have caught the attention of a dangerous figure from Lille’s past. Will her troubled past come back and drag her down, or will the Fetish Queen get her way?

I'm giving this a 2-Cauldron Needs Work rating not because it's a serial but because THE FETISH QUEEN: REBORN by Nicole Camden needs a few things IMHO. We've all read a serial or two and I think we can all agree that serials are tricky and challenging because you're chopping the story into several pieces but at the same time, each volume should give the illusion of a complete tale. It should have a plot, conflict and resolution and the ending would be more or less a cliffhanger.

There is considerable plot, Lillehammer Marceaux is the daughter of a stripper who ran away from home when she was in her early teens to escape her abusive father who's a felon. Through the years Lille reinvented herself into this Old Hollywood femme fatale. She then inherited the Fetish Box, an erotica shop, and runs it with her BFF Mary. Then she meets Max, they had sex and then what? Nothing, that's what.

On paper, I love the idea behind Lille's character. She has a past and she's hiding from it by creating this alter ego. I love femme fatales, they're instantly attractive just by being so. But Lille isn't fascinating at all, she's cold, has a chip on her shoulder and as stale as day old bread. As for Max, he's sexy at first glance, he's Irish, tattooed and has a fine accent to complete the look. But like Lille Max is boring too! The erotic parts, which I skimmed, weren't exciting as well, Lille is a Domme and the first time she and Max did it, she tried to do some light D/s play. Erotica sex scenes is where the characters become vulnerable and shed their masks even if they're at play however I didn't see any connection between these two aside from pheromone response.

The missing parts are the climax and some sort of cliffhanger. This is a serial so you want your readers to grab the next one right? The resolution and subsequent cliffhanger doesn't tie with the plot, it's related to the premise, yes, but because it wasn't reinforced throughout the serial, it didn't feel cohesive with the overall arc. To sum it up, I'm glad I only got part 1 and won't be bogged to read the next two parts only to DNF it. Finishing this 125 paged serial is painful enough, I don't think I can go through it two more times.

  2. Oh, I hate it when that happens :( It reminds me of drama shows where it's not episodic. I love series, but I only truly like-like it if there's a big story in the background, told in subplots, know what I mean? Otherwise it just feels incomplete. Sorry this was such a dud, dear. Hope the next one is better.

    1. Exactly that's why I rarely watch drama series especially daytime soap!

  3. Aw, too bad that the plot wasn't more structured and her character should have been more touching that she was

  4. I don't like serials, and I don't read much erotica, so I don't think this one is for me. Sorry to hear that it wasn't for you either, but at least it was short!

  5. I am not a big fan of these serials. I don't like the cliffhangers between every episode unless I have the whole book. I am sorry this one didn't pan out. I wouldn't read it anyway as I am not a fan of erotica.

  6. Yeah, this definitely needs work. I'm on & off with serials, but your right about one thing...make the 1st book interesting enough for folks to pick up the next one.

  7. Bummer! That's a great cover, and I was expecting to open up my pocketbook once again...LOL It really sucks, how in the world they expect you to continued when the first book doesn't deliver. The first book needs to be hook.
    Thanks girl.

  9. I am currently reading a serial and I don't mind it, but yeah I can see where they would fall short.

    1. Some serials are good, it has a semblance of a story so we're still satisfied despite the short length but it has to be a STORY to begin with

  10. Sorry the characters fell flat on you. I had my eye on this one, but I think I'll skip.

Yes I agree, picking up a serial is basically signing yourself up for a cliffhanger. Maybe the author is trying to step away from that idea but I agree that for you to want to read the second and third part of the book, you have to give an ending that would make a reader want to know what happens next and too bad this one didn't do that for you.

The premise sounds interesting though with the female being the Domme. Too bad it wasn't executed well.

    1. Yup! And I was excited to read an erotica with a Domme for a change, Tired of the alpha males.

  12. Great review Braine, sounds like this one was frustrating and wasn't really up your alley because of the serial format. I like the idea of a femme fatale as well but it definitely sounds like it fell short during the sex scenes!

  13. You gave the perfect description of a successful serial. You have to make the reader want more. The synopsis makes this seem like a story I would try, but the stale characters is frustrating.
Funny enough, I started a serial today, and am calling it quits, too. And I actually enjoy them.
    Thanks for the great review!

    1. Some serials are great, I've read a few that were executed well. I think I could overlook the lack of a good plot if the characters were intriguing enough

  14. I am very careful about serials and to be honest will only by the ones that are bi-weekly episodes that you pay one fee and every other week an installment uploads on your kindle. I agree with the ingredients needed for serial installments and feel bad this didn't work. The premise sounds good though.

    1. How does the bi-weekly episode work? Is it cheap? Sometimes these serials cost more than a full book

  15. Aww, too bad. This one looked like it had potential, Braine. But I'm with you...if it doesn't offer enough to hook you and keep you hooked...move on. There are too many great books and so very little time. ;)

  16. I"m not really for books in part, it's always difficult for me. But I'm sorry this one wasn"t for you. You're right the idea was really interesting, mainly with a heroine like that.

    1. It's challenging as it is waiting for the next volume to come out. We should at least have a satisfying cliffhanger
