Gotta love Tiffany Allee! I am a fan of her paranormal romance novella series, Files of the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency (OWEA), so it's only natural that I would jump and join the tour for her latest novel, TEMPTATION BY FIRE.
TEMPTATION BY FIRE is more of a psychic paranormal story than supernatural as TAllee expounds below. It's a quick read at 200+ pages, the world building is classic urban fantasy and the plot exciting. TAllee's demon hunters or Vantors are more or less the archetype, they are humans with enhanced abilities thanks to their demon blood infused special tattoos. Ava is a telepath and her psychic power makes her a great asset to both the demons and Vanators alike. So there's a crazy and exciting chase that went on: Venators catching demons, catching Venators, catching Ava. Woot!
I love Ava, despite her somewhat isolation caused by her curse, she didn't play the victim role. Don't you hate it when females play the victim, like they expect the world to bend for them because they had a tough life? Ava isn't like that at all, not only is she a strong and brave heroine, she's compassionate and non judgmental too. Karson expected Ava to get spooked when he told her about his past and instead of running away, Ava just nodded her head and practically said "deal with it, dude!" LOL. See Karson's family was massacred by these demons and understandably that would put a number on anybody. So Karson has this tough and standoffish demeanor because of his tragic past which Ava would eventually tear down.
The best part about TEMPTATION BY FIRE is the romance! For a short novel I expect some sort of "insta" to happen. Thank the muses TAllee didn't give us cheap thrills! Ava and Karson immediately crushed on each other, that's for sure, but like normal people, they exercised control! I appreciate the power of passion but sexual chemistry still has to be believable even if it's fantasy right? Anyway, instead of jumping each other's bones the first chance they get, Ava and Karson kept one another at arm's length, calculated, rationalized, maintained control and prioritized the deadly threat of demons before allowing themselves to get distracted by sex and romance. So expect a lot of action and tension.
I hope there's a sequel for TEMPTATION BY FIRE, right now it's a stand-alone but it's the kind of story that has the potential for more. I love the simple setting with it's intense plot and "normal" romance. I love the short list of characters so Ava and Karson's character development didn't suffer given the short length of the novel. Plus TAllee kept the conflict and resolution of the story in perspective resulting to a very satisfying read. It's hard to explain but TAllee's brand of PNR/UF is unique in the sense that she keeps certain things believable, her characters doesn't lose their "human" and rational characteristics just because they're "different". They're not grossly exaggerated either which makes them very likeable and relatable despite their sordid pasts. I guess what I'm trying to say is, TAllee will give you a good dose of fantasy without veering off too much from reality. We all need to be grounded sometimes.
Purchase Temptation By Fire
Hi Tiffany! Congrats on your new release.
Thank you so much! And thank you for having me back here today. :)
Is TEMPTATION BY FIRE a new series? If so what's the name of the series and what is it about.
Temptation by Fire is potentially the first of three books (I have the next two somewhat planned out in my head). Right now it is a stand alone story, but it’s definitely possible it could turn into a series.
The book follows the journey of a psychic as she stumbles upon a hidden world full of terrifying demons, and inadvertently gets in the way of a Venator—a demon hunter. They have to work together to stay alive and fix what she’s done. Action, heat, and hijinks ensue.
What kind of supernatural beings are Ava and Karson?
Ava and Karson aren’t exactly supernatural beings—at least noting the way I’d normally think of the term (vampire, werewolf, etc.). Ava is a psychic—although she hates that word. When she touches people, she sometimes gains a glimpse into their future. The visions she sees are generally unpleasant, and she hasn’t had a lot of luck in preventing anything she’s witnessed. This has caused her to be pretty negative about her ability, and she avoids touching people as much as possible.
Karson is a demon hunter. He’s human—mostly. The group of demon hunters he belongs to (the Venators) use demon blood to enhance magical symbols tattooed on their bodies. Tattoos which give them certain subtle abilities. The tattoos make the Venators just powerful enough to hunt demons, although they still avoid direct confrontation whenever possible. Because fighting demons is dangerous—tattoos or no.
How is this different or similar to your previous books?
I would say that while there is a good deal of humor and some fun moments in this book, the world that Ava and Karson are living in is somewhat darker than what I’ve written in the OWEA books, and much darker than the Sons of Kane books. Death (or worse) is a very real possibility that the Venators must deal with, and the demon blood they carry to power their tattoos doesn’t come without cost.
Also, this is the first book I’ve published in first person that has included alternating viewpoints (Ava’s and Karson’s). And this book is quite a bit longer than my other books (nearly double the length of an OWEA novella).
Aside from this, are you going to release a new OWEA and Sons of Kane book this year?
My next Sons of Kane book is scheduled for release in April (woot!). I think readers who enjoyed Don’t Bite the Bridesmaidwill find Charles’s foray into love a fun ride.
I don’t have a new OWEA book scheduled at the moment, but there is something fun that will be released for the series laterthis year.
I know you have superhero book and this trope is slowly becoming popular in the circuit, do you have any plans of writing another novels like Heels & Heroes?
I adore superhero stories, both in print and on screen. I would love to write another superhero book—either set in the Heels & Heroes world, or in a new one. It’s definitely on my list of projects I’d like to tackle, but I don’t have a timeframe set.
New Adult is another popular genre and a lot of paranormal writers have dabbled with this genre. Any plans to write a New Adult book?
I think New Adult is super fun. The age range they’re set in, and the unique struggles facing characters as they journey out into the world alone, offers authors a lot of fun and unique storytelling opportunities. I do have some New Adult plot bunnies, one of which I plan to jump into this year. Of course, New Adult has a unique feel and voice, and it remains to be seen if that’s something I can tackle. My ideas tend to lean a bit more mystery/thrillerish, which is a little different from most of what I’ve noticed in the category. So we’ll see how it turns out. ;)
CPA-turned-romance-author Tiffany Allee used to battle spreadsheets in Corporate America, and now concentrates on her characters’ battles to find love. Raised in small-town Colorado, Tiffany currently lives in Phoenix, AZ, by way of Chicago and Denver. She is happily married to a secret romantic who tolerates her crazy mutterings.
She writes about ass-kicking heroines and the strong heroes who love them. Her work includes the suspense-driven From the Files of the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency series which revolves around a group of paranormal cops solving crimes and finding love, and Don’t Bite the Bridesmaid, a lighthearted paranormal romance (Entangled Publishing).
Tiffany has an MBA in accounting and nearly a decade of experience in corporate finance. All super useful stuff for a writer who spends far too much time trying to figure out fun ways to keep her characters apart, and interesting ways to kill people (for her books—of course!).
