Julie Ann Walker on Born Wild

I am a big fan of this lady's motorcycle themed contemporary romance series and I'm beyond excited to have her here on the blog again to talk about her delicious bad boys and their addictive tales!

BRAINE: Hi Julie! Welcome back to Talk Supe! We are so happy and excited for the release of BORN WILD. Can you tell us something about this fifth installment in the Black Knights Inc. Series that we won't read in the blurb?

JAW:  Hi! *waves*  Thank you so much for inviting me back.  It's always a pleasure to be here!  As for something you won't read about in the blurb?  How about this... there's a scene involving a shoot-out in a bar. It's straight out of the wild, wild West, but set in modern day Chicago.

Thrilling, chilling, edge-of-your-seat action - I guarantee! Does that whet your whistle to pick up the book? LOL!

BRAINE: Curioser and curioser. For those who haven't read it yet, that wasn't an exaggeration. Let's talk about the heroine for a little bit. Eve, a Chicago socialite, and Wild Bill, a former Navy SEAL, are an interesting combination. How are they different from the previous couples?

JAW:  Well, I like to think all of my characters are unique.  But I'd say what sets Bill and Eve apart is their history together.  In previous books we've seen them dancing around each other and we know they were once a couple.  We've been given tiny glimpses into their past, but in BORN WILD we finally get to find out what all the hot fuss is about.  And it is hot, even if I do say so myself.  MEOW!

BRAINE: True and that has been imminent since Thrill Ride. What's your favorite scene in BORN WILD? Will you share a short excerpt with our Supies?
JAW:  Favorite scene would have to be when Bill realizes that the bar he left Eve in is surrounded by police officers...

“What in the world?” Bill heard Mac yell over the grumbling sound of dual V-twin engines. He gripped Phoenix’s handlebars tighter as he squinted up the block to where the red-blue-red flash of emergency vehicle lights bounced menacingly against the surrounding buildings.

They’d kinda, sorta, pseudo-fixed the Bat Cave door. But the thing was still acting sketchy as hell, sometimes opening and closing of its own volition, so they’d decided to ditch the Hummer in exchange for the bikes.

“I think that’s Delilah’s!” Mac’s voice sliced into his thoughts.

He realized in that moment, as he twisted his wrist and blazed through the red light and cross traffic—heedless of the sound of squealing tires on either side of him and the fact that the silver bumper on a Chevy half-ton pickup truck came within an inch of his biker boot—what it meant when people said their hearts froze. Because his stopped beating, turned to a hard fist of dry ice in his chest, and proceeded to burn a hole straight through his soul.

He wasn’t thinking when he blasted into the little parking lot in front of Red Delilah’s, Phoenix’s fat rear tire bouncing over the curb until his teeth clacked together with brain-jostling force. He wasn’t thinking when he toed out the kickstand and jumped from the bike, switching off the growling engine. He wasn’t thinking when he ran toward the waiting ambulance and the body-bag-laden stretcher being loaded inside.

“Eve!” He frantically tossed off the restraining hands of the police officers who leapt toward him, instinctively shoving an elbow into someone’s nose. “Eve! Eve!” His wailing, breathless cries howled from him like the wind blowing over the dunes in the desert. His lungs worked like bellows, but no oxygen got to his brain.

“Stand down, asshole!” one of the officers shouted in his ear, snaking an arm around his throat as two, then three more uniformed CPD boys tried to wrestle him to the ground. He fought them like he was fighting for his life, hissing and biting, punching and kicking. He was a mindless beast, bent on only one thing: getting inside that ambulance and—

When he heard his name, when he heard her sweet voice, all the fight seeped out of him like air from a torn balloon. He choked on a hard, wet sob that lodged in the center of his chest. Then, the next thing he knew, he was kissing concrete, there were an unknown number of very pointy knees digging into his back, and his wrists were being secured by a cold, hard set of handcuffs.

He didn’t care. Because she was alive! The CPD could take out their billy clubs and pound the living shit out of him for the rest of the evening if they wanted to, and he’d still be smiling.

“Get off him! Get off him!” From the corner of his eye—the one not being ground into the parking lot’s hot pavement—he could see Eve pushing officers aside. “He’s with me!”

Slowly, the restraining hands disappeared, as did the pointy knees. And after a ringing command from Eve that someone should help him up, two policemen grabbed his elbows and hauled him to his feet. The very next instant, Eve was pressed against him. Her arms were around his neck, her head was on his shoulder—the smell of her fruity shampoo obscured the more pungent aroma of car exhaust—and she was sobbing and squeezing him so tightly he could barely breathe.

Who cares? Oxygen is overrated anyway.

BRAINE: Good times although I have a lot of favorites. I love that each book can stand on its own, and still feel like it is part of the series. How do you keep each book fresh and interesting?

JAW: Oh, thank you so much! What a compliment. But, as to how I do it? Don't look at me! LOL! I just go where my characters tell me to go. No, but seriously, I'm a total pantser - meaning I write by the seat of my pants. So, if each story is fresh and interesting, it's probably because I pulled it straight out of my, ahem, you know... *wink*

BRAINE: You're not giving yourself enough credit! Listening to your characters is very good. Some writers don't see it but we readers can totally see if we're being set up like if the author is trying to force a situation to get the outcome they planned. Did you have fun bringing back previous characters for cameos in BORN WILD? Who kept showing up and wouldn’t stay out of this book? :)

JAW: There are fewer cameos in this book than in others. But Delilah, the loud-mouthed, redheaded bartender we all know and love makes an appearance. Of course, Peanut, the rotund, notch-eared cat is up to his usual shenanigans. And then we get to meet some new faces. Ace, the hunky helicopter pilot, and Mac, the slow-talking, Texas-born, former Fed... to name a few.

BRAINE: Sounds like we'll be reading about this new people in the coming books... I was so excited to see a 6th book, Hell for Leather, coming out next year! What are your plans for beyond that? Book 7 (and 8, 9, 10, 20)?!!

JAW: Oh, thank you! I'm pretty excited about that, too! Currently, I'm contracted out to book eight in the series. But I think there will be an even dozen Black Knights Inc. novels. I just can't stop until every BKI boy gets his happily-ever-after! ;-)

BRAINE: That's good news for us because in every book, another Knight is added so I think it'll go beyond a dozen. Now I know this is a tough question, but do you have a favorite character in the BKI series (so far)?

JAW: Ha! That's like asking a mother to choose her favorite child. So, I'm not going to do it. But I will say that I most identify with Ozzie. He's a geek and I'm a math major. He quotes movies and I... "Bueller? Bueller?" He's a huge 80's music fan, and I have just about every song recorded in that decade downloaded onto my iPhone. And he's a total trekkie and I've seen every episode of every incarnation of the series you can imagine. The Original, New Generation, Voyager, Deep Space Nine...

BRAINE: Great save but I sort of know you're going to say that. Describe BORN WILD in 7 words or less.

JAW: Second-chance love story with guns and motorcycles! That's eight, I think, but I make up my own rules! *snicker*

BRAINE: Thanks Julie and many more returns to Talk Supe. Supies... check out the series, it's sexy and will make your heart pump against your chest in more ways than one.

She's got three rules:

1. Trust no one… Eve Edens has been abandoned, used, or manipulated by almost everyone she's ever met. Born into ridiculous wealth, she's dealt with the petty jealousies and sordid little resentments for nearly thirty years. But after three botched attempts on her life, she can no longer ignore the truth. Someone wants her dead.

2. Avoid the bad boys at all costs… William "Wild Bill" Reichert, the wonderfully sexy boy who abandoned her years ago, is back in town. Only he's no boy. Now he's a covert operative - and he's all man. When Eve hires Bill to help her discover who is behind the attacks, Bill soon comes to suspect it's someone much closer to Eve than she dares to believe.

3. And never fall for the same ruse twice… The search for the killer takes Bill and Eve deep into the dark secrets and strange world of the rich and famous, and into the heart of red-hot passion re-ignited by the peril that threatens to consume them both. But does Eve dare risk her heart on Bill a second time?

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julie Ann Walker dives back into action with the red-hot romantic suspense Black Knights Inc. series! They claim they’re bad-boy bikers who own custom motorcycle shop, but these special-ops guys--a mix of Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, Marines, FBI and more--handle the jobs too tough for the government to tackle.

“Wild” Bill Reichert knows a thing or two about explosives. The ex-Navy SEAL can practically rig a bomb blindfolded. But there’s no way to diffuse the inevitable fireworks the day Eve Edens walks back into his life, asking for help…

Eve doesn’t know what to do when the Chicago police won’t believe someone is out to hurt her. The only place to turn is Black Knights Inc—after all, no one is better at protection than the covert special-ops team. Yet there’s also no one better at getting her all turned on than Billy Reichert. She has a feeling this is one blast from the past that could backfire big time…

Julie Ann Walker is prone to spouting movie quotes and song lyrics. She'll never say no to sharing a glass of wine or going for a long walk. She prefers impromptu travel over the scheduled kind, and she takes her coffee with milk. You can usually find her on her bicycle along the lake shore in Chicago or blasting away at her keyboard, trying to wrangle her capricious imagination into submission.
