Braine Reviews: Cursed by S.J. Harper + Giveaway

Series: Fallen Siren 1
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Format: Mass Paperback
Source: Publisher
Publisher: Roc
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Meet FBI Agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong.

She’s cursed. He’s damned. Together, they make one hell of a team. Emma Monroe is a Siren, cursed by the gods and bound to earth to atone for an ancient failure. She’s had many names and many lives, but only one mission: redemption. Now that she works missing persons cases for the FBI, it could be just a rescue away. Unless her new partner leads her astray.

Special Agent Zack Armstrong just transferred into the San Diego Field Office. He’s a werewolf, doing his best to beat back the demons from his dark and dangerous past. As a former Black Ops sniper, he’s taken enough lives. Now he’s doing penance by saving them.

Emma and Zack’s very first case draws them deep into the realm of the paranormal and forces them to use their own supernatural abilities. But that leaves each of them vulnerable, and there are lines partners should not cross. As secrets are revealed and more women go missing, one thing becomes clear: as they race to save the victims, Emma and Zack risk losing themselves.

I'm a Siren - one of three. We were banished by Zeus and cursed by Demeter thousands of years ago for failing to protect her daughter Persephone - for failing to rescue her before she was dragged by Hades to the Underworld. it's for this I atone. For this I pay.
CURSED is book 1 of the amazing writing duo, S.J. Harper, from their brand new series, Fallen Siren. CURSED is a procedural urban fantasy story that involves a missing persons case which features the usual menagerie of otherworldy creatures starting with vampires and werewolves coupled with unforeseeable complications. Things get hairy when you throw in a plastic surgeon, a cursed Siren and an underground farm where human organs are harvested for various transplants all in the name of science and humanitarian purposes, into the mix.

The setting is present time San Diego and humans are still unaware that supernaturals exist as the lot of them are assimilating inconspicuously in our society. Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong are such an example, they are case partners working on an artist's suspicious disappearance. And these two are more than case partners. Emma and Zack have a shared (steamy) past and it's quite obvious that the fire is still burning and being case partners is doing nothing but fan the flame of their growing attraction for each other.

What I liked about these two is that Emma didn't play hard to get and isn't snarky like other UF heroines. She knows what and who she is and isn't in the business of trying to prove something. Zack stayed decent and didn't puff up and beat his chest up like other Alphas. Quite refreshing if you ask me. Now the lack of sexual tension and verbal foreplay was little disappointing with a heat level of a modest 2 out of 5. Which I find ironic considering our heroine is a skilled and gifted seductress and our hero is a passionate werewolf, pheromones and mating calls is a given but remained undelivered. I haven't read any of S.J. Harper's books so I don't know if they want to keep things wholesome and leave the more intimate parts to their reader's imaginations (like their fellow Roc author, Kat Richardson and her PG series Greywalker). I can respect that, I guess they want to keep the focus on the plot over the romance still the irony of the premise didn't escape me.

Aside from the lukewarm smexiness, CURSED wasn't as thrilling as I expected. After all, this is an UF series with law enforcement agents for heroes. It was rich in mystery and suspense but there wasn't an array of hair raising, heart pounding action to keep my adrenalin rushing through my system. It was very investigative probably because the "bad guys" weren't hardcore villains so things didn't get down and dirty. It did however leave us with a few things to think about which sets up the next book quite well.

Digging deeper, I do love the drama and emotional dilemma Emma faces on a regular basis because of her curse. She's lived several millennia, met interesting people, but forbidden to love otherwise she risks the wrath of Demeter. Sounds like a lonely existence if you ask me. A note though to those who've read the book already, I don't want to make Demeter the villain right away, when the book ended I have a feeling she's softening a bit and is challenging Emma in a positive way to pay her dues so she can release herself from the curse. Maybe.

Now whilst CURSED was a quick read, I do hope that the next book will have more danger and sexual tension. I want my urban fantasy to keep my heart pumping for different reasons. But even if CURSED fell short on some parts, it did give us a great peek at Emma's world and future conflicts, both romantic and otherwise, which we'll know more about in the next book. CURSED may not have wowed me but it was good enough to make me follow the series and read the next installment.
A Siren never begs, I can have any man at any time. I've conquered kings, seduced holy men and rakes, driven the famous and infamous to desperation with want.

Saber Alexiares is no ordinary vampire. He is like a cruel, fire-breathing dragon. Reared in the bowels of the colony by Dark Ones, he has no conscience, no compassion, and no saving grace. Captured by the enemy, he is sentenced to execution by sunlight only to discover that his body will not burn — he isn’t who he thought he was. He was stolen at birth. He was reared by the wrong house. And the sunlight isn’t going to kill him because he does have a soul.

Vanya Demir is the very heart of goodness and light, an ancient female from a magical race, the progeny of humans and celestial deities before they were cursed by the Blood. BRAINE: 5 books in! Congratulations! How many more books are you planning to write for Blood Curse?

TESSA DAWN: Thank you! It’s hard to believe we’re on book #5 already!

As for how many books will be in the series? I really don’t know, lol. I definitely plan on 1-2 more, but after that, I’ll have to reevaluate and take the series’ temperature, so to speak: How is the series doing? How am I feeling about the writing process? And how much enthusiasm is still out there…for more.

BRAINE: Whatever you decide, we're here to support you. Speaking of series temperatures, what direction is the series now taking after Blood Redemption?

TESSA DAWN: Kagen, Kagen, Kagen. It’s time for the last Silivasi brother to take center stage, and there’s going to be a major reveal in Blood Redemption that launches his journey.

BRAINE: Exciting and a little alarming. The last Silivasi's brother's story, makes me a little sad to hear the next arc. How is Blood Redemption different from the previous books?

TESSA DAWN: Oh, I think it’s very different! Don’t get me wrong: The series is the series, and it follows an identifiable pattern, but Blood Redemption is the first book that spotlights a truly dark and lost character as the protagonist: the BAD BOY of all bad boys!!! This book was far more character driven than plot driven.

BRAINE: Fluck! I really need to catch up with Nachari's story so I can jump to this. Are you planning or currently writing anything outside Blood Curse?

TESSA DAWN: Mmm, always, lol. It’s just a matter of finding the time. I have outlined and started a dragon trilogy, so we’ll see where that goes… J

BRAINE: Oooh Dragons! I am personally loving that trend in PNR/UF books nowadays. I hope you do find the time to start it. But for now, can you describe Blood Curse Twitter-format.

TESSA DAWN: 800 BC: the last female of an ancient race was sacrificed and the males were cursed for the crime. Present Day: their Vampyr descendants live with The Curse and struggle to claim their female destinies.

(Now you see why I post more on facebook, LOL)

Thanks for having me! J

Blitz & Giveaway: Seven Years by Dannika Dark

Seven Years
Seven 1
Dannika Dark
October 22, 2013
Paranormal Romance
Seven years ago, my world ended.
Seven years later, my new life began.

It's been seven years since Lexi Knight lost her brother in a tragic accident. On the anniversary of his death, her brother's best friend shows up unexpectedly - a man she hasn't seen since the funeral. He is no longer the boy Lexi once knew, but a dangerous-looking man with tattoos and dark secrets. He broke her trust and abandoned her family, yet what he reveals makes it impossible to stay angry. Lexi has been secretly infatuated with Austin since childhood, so finding out he's a Shifter just makes him sexier. Dammit.

Austin Cole has returned to the city where he grew up, and just in time. He's lived a hard life these past seven years, and the shadows of his past are threatening to destroy Lexi's family. It's time that she learned the truth about her brother, but there is a shocking twist that Austin never saw coming. Now he must protect her family when her mother and sister wind up in mortal danger. Will Lexi learn to accept the truth about who he is, and can Austin salvage a relationship from the ruins of their past?

BRAINE: Hi Dannika! Congratulations on SEVEN YEARS! Let me get to the meat of things, what is the series, Seven about?

DANNIKA DARK: Thanks so much for having me! The Seven Series is a paranormal romance that focuses on the lives of Shifters. SEVEN YEARS is the first in the series and centers around a young woman named Lexi who is stuck in an ordinary life that seems to be falling apart. On the anniversary of her brother’s death, an old family friend comes back in town she hasn’t seen since the funeral. Austin Cole has a few secrets to tell about who he is and where he’s been. As the story unfolds, we find out that there is a world of Breed living in secret among humans. The series follows Austin’s family of brothers who have recently formed a pack.

BRAINE: The book titles for Seven sounds like it's counting down to something, can you give us a hint on what it's counting down to?

DANNIKA DARK: I’d probably say the final book [One Second]. ;-) Each title directly relates to a span of time within the book that is relevant to that specific story.

BRAINE: The first book is, SEVEN YEARS, can you tell us something extra on top of the blurb & excerpt?

DANNIKA DARK: This is the kind of story that will appeal to those who really love a good romance. I’m really big on endings, so I always make sure that readers will walk away feeling good about the story. So, no cliffhangers.

BRAINE: I'm the opposite, I love cliffhangers! So the blurb also says light paranormal romance, what's the focus of SEVEN YEARS?

DANNIKA DARK: SEVEN YEARS is a blend of paranormal and romance, but not too heavy on the world-building in that readers are drowning in flashbacks of ancient times or having to figure out all the Breed laws. I wanted the real focus to be on paranormal beings (Shifters) who live ordinary lives (as much as can be expected) and meet someone who changes them. The focus will be on friendship, love, family, romance, passion, and finding out where a person fits in your life.

BRAINE: Sounds like this will appeal to contemporary readers too if that's the case. How is writing SEVEN YEARS different from the Mageri books & Closer?

DANNIKA DARK: The Mageri series evolves into a complex story with heavy subject matter and intense scenes on a grander scale. SEVEN YEARS has a different feel, one I’ve enjoyed writing because I’ve allowed the story to have more humor and realness to it that made it a breath of fresh air. Usually at the end of writing a Mageri book, I need a bottle of wine and a four-day nap. I’m emotionally spent because the material is much darker. That’s not to say the Seven Series won’t have it’s dark moments, but it’s really nice to be able to focus on one Breed type (Shifters), whereas the Mageri series has main characters of all different Breeds and there is much to consider on the politics and how they interact.

BRAINE: Does the series follow Lexi Knight and Austin Cole all throughout or do the main characters change with every book?

DANNIKA DARK: This series will have main character changes through each book, but it’s all part of the same story, so you’ll see the same people. I think that’s what’s made it both equally exciting and challenging. Each book, I get to know a new set of characters that I’m familiar with, but I have to dig deep to find out what makes them tick. In many ways, it’s more difficult than writing an Urban Fantasy.

BRAINE: Fans of Mageri have grown to love Silver, how does Lexi compare?

DANNIKA DARK: I’ve enjoyed writing Silver because she’s been on a huge learning curve with her new life in the Mageri series. She’s never known the love of family and has trust issues, so that’s been her biggest obstacle to overcome. Lexi, on the other hand, knows what’s important in her life. She knows what she does and doesn’t want. They are both independent women, but Lexi has been a doll to write because she loves life and has a great sense of humor, despite everything that’s happened in her life. She’s resilient and optimistic, even if she’s a little damaged.

BRAINE: What should fans expect from SEVEN YEARS?

DANNIKA DARK: Laughter, toe-curling, suspense, and maybe a few tingles. ;-)

BRAINE: What's your next project book-wise?

DANNIKA DARK: Six Months (Seven Series: #2) I hope to begin working on a separate urban fantasy series in 2014 while I’m publishing the Seven Series.

The closer I snuggled up to Austin, the more I craved that cozy familiarity—more than I would have cared to admit. I’d missed him. How do you not miss someone who was a huge chunk of your childhood and young-adult life who disappeared off the face of the earth? Almost every memory I had from kindergarten to age twenty involved Austin Cole.
The next thing I knew, my cheek rested on his bicep and I tucked my body against his like a puzzle piece. Just when I closed my heavy eyelids, he groaned.
Oh God, please don’t let him wake up now.
It was deep and guttural, and he shifted on his right side, facing me.
“You okay?” he murmured.
I didn’t reply. I played dead and pretended I was asleep. It seemed like a good plan to avoid the embarrassment of explaining why I was latched on to him like a man-sucking leech.
A rough, warm hand cupped my cheek and I felt him scoot down a little. Maybe he thought I had fallen asleep, because his thumb brushed over my right eyelid softly.
Five times. I counted.
When his lips lightly touched mine, my brain just shut down. It was a soft, almost nonexistent kiss, but I felt it all the way down to my toes. Then it zinged back up to my hips and damn if I didn’t moan.
Now we were both aware I wasn’t asleep and he was kissing me. But it didn’t stop. His kiss pressed a little bit harder and tingles roared through my body, and my breath was shaky and erratic.
When his tongue touched my lip, I quickly opened my mouth and kissed him back.
Kissed him like I’d fantasized about doing for the last seven years.

Down in Texas, there's a woman who drinks copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to her laptop. Yeah, I know. I've got a drinking problem. Hi, I'm Danni.

Some people count sheep when they have insomnia. Since I was little, I used to make up stories in my head in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I'd get so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down more and more, creating short stories which evolved into poetry.

Another one of my hobbies is digital art. I designed all my book covers.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to: giving my characters a pulse through publishing. I write adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels. I let the story tell itself, and color outside the lines. I am not a YA author, but I think it’s pretty great that there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal. These are the future readers!

All is fair in love and war.

Jacob Matthews learned that lesson the hard way when he discovered just how far some people will go to win someone’s heart.

When fate brought Samantha Monroe back into Jacob’s life, he finally started to believe that his world was going to be complete. He loves Sam with the kind of intensity that burns deep and scalds your very soul. But fate had other ideas in mind, forcing him into a life filled with cold touches, long silences and complete misery.

Brooke Dugan had to have Jacob Matthews. It didn’t matter that he was in love with someone else, she always got what she wanted. And what she wanted was Jacob. Brooke vowed that she would stop at nothing until Jacob was tied to her forever… in both life and death.

Find out what happens when lies are revealed and the bitter truth comes out. Hearts will be broken and bonds will be tested.

Everyone is worthy of love -- even Jacob, but can he find his happily ever after?

Prepare yourself for the emotional follow up to Love Square…

I've been rooting for Jacob since I read Love Square two months ago. I felt that he was played and got caught in the middle of a marital war and became collateral damage. He sure got the short end of the stick and even after he managed to walk away from that relationship, he didn't fare any better with Brooke but at least she wasn't married. HIS EVER AFTER is Jacob's POV and the events that happened here are side by side with Love Square, during the unraveling of his affair with Sam until Jacob, thanks to Jessica Ingro, finally has HIS EVER AFTER.

I'm an opportunistic bastard and am going to capitalize on that as best I can.
Let me start with the women. Sam. I disliked Sam in Love Square, I found her foolish and capricious and that rock bottom she found herself in was her own doing, nobody else's. I also felt that she still got lucky because her husband loved her too much, enough to fight for her tooth and nail. I'm happy that they were able to move forward with their marriage despite Jacob being in the middle but at the same time, I felt Sam got off almost Scott-free from the mess she made. That said, I must say the Sam made me proud here in HIS EVER AFTER, Jacob pulled a hail mary pass to get her back but Sam stood her ground. She's finally redeemed in my eyes!

Brooke is a piece of work. 'Nuff said.
I feel trapped in this relationship. I'm not going to pretend that we're making love.
As for the meat of the story, Jacob. This dude is a man whore who irritated, frustrated and annoyed me to kingdom come! He self medicates with sex which explains why his love life is a frickin' mess and why he finds himself with these dysfunctional females! It took him a looong time to be in the same place as Sam: self-possessed, self-aware and has self-love. Jacob's road to contentment was paved with nails, barbs and trip wires. He made so many douche-bag moves that made me upset but in the end, he pulled through and did the right thing. He just needs to exorcise some of his demons and when he finally did, Jacob did well and beautifully.

HIS EVER AFTER is an awesome sequel. JIngro allowed her characters to tell their story and it's their grayness that I find so compelling. We get sucked in to their moral dilemmas and see them peel themselves off the floor when they make bad choices. Her characters are real and normal, going with their feelings with no guarantees of a good future. Like most of us. I may not have been the biggest fan of Love Square because of its theme but HIS EVER AFTER is a great redemption story. Everyone deserves a second chance and Jacob and Sam sure took theirs and ran with it.

Purchase Love Square

BRAINE: Hi Jessica! Thanks for giving us an interview.

Jessica Ingro: Thanks for having me!

BRAINE: So my burning question since LOVE SQUARE is why take on a cheating theme?

Jessica Ingro: I’ve always had stories playing out in my head, and Sam’s was one of them. I found her intriguing and wanted to explore what happens when you are so unhappy with yourself and your circumstances, that you just can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I think more people than we care to admit make morally questionable and irrational decisions like cheating. It is a fact of life that isn’t going anywhere. And until we are in that person’s shoes, we really can’t know how or why they make those choices. From the outside looking in, Sam had the perfect life. But on the inside, it was full of loneliness and heartache. I think my favorite line was, “What we grow up thinking of as black and white is anything but. Gray areas are everywhere.” And I really believe that is true. I may have grown up with a distaste for adultery, but until I’m put in a position of weakness with temptation sitting in front of me and a chance to rewrite my story, I’m not sure how I’d react.

BRAINE: When you were writing the characters, did you want us to feel empathetic, sympathetic or even love them at some point? I guess I'd like to know what was the rationale behind these controversial people?

Jessica Ingro: To tell you the truth, I didn’t really think about it. I was actually quite surprised when everyone started talking about how much they hated Sam. Naïve I know. As the author, there were times the characters made me mad, or made me cry, or made me laugh. But I never really thought about how the outside world would perceive them. I just told their story as it happened. They had to go through the paces that they did. I didn’t manipulate them at all in an attempt to persuade the reader one way or another. They just are who they are.

BRAINE: Ha! I'm one of those people but I do see that "Sam" took control of the story. I'm sure there are some people who like me wasn't enamored by the theme of LOVE SQUARE but truly loved your style and admire your boldness in writing about a touchy subject. What was the most outrageous feedback you got, where were you when you read this and how did you handle it?

Jessica Ingro: Thank you for the compliment. I never really considered myself gutsy or bold to take it on, so I appreciate it when people say that. Nothing in particular sticks out, but I think the most outrageous feedback I’ve gotten is how much people despise Sam and her decisions. It took a lot of getting used to hearing her getting bashed. It’s like having your child get picked on at school. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, so I left it alone. And for every two Sam haters, there was someone who identified with her.

BRAINE: LOL I'm sorry, I'm one of those! I'm not Sam's biggest fan but she got redeemed in my eyes in HIS EVER AFTER.

Jessica Ingro: I’ve never been one to try and force my thoughts or beliefs on another, and fortunately for me, nothing has been too harmful like other friends of mine in this industry. I don’t expect everyone to like the story. I just think there are helpful and constructive ways to get your point across, as opposed to straight up negativity.

BRAINE: After HIS EVER AFTER, what direction is the series going?

Jessica Ingro: I never expected LOVE SQUARE to be a series, so it still boggles my mind that there is a book 2 releasing. At the beginning of book 2, I insisted that this would be it. However, as the story developed so did scenes for a holiday novella and a third book. My plan is to the end the series there, but never say never!

BRAINE: Good to hear! I liked how HIS EVER AFTER ended. Looks like everyone's got closure? What's next for you? Any new projects you're working on?

Jessica Ingro: Up next is the holiday novella, Their Merry Little Christmas, followed by a standalone titled, Love, Your Concierge. It will be the story of a personal concierge that falls in love with one of her clients. I’m really excited about it and can’t wait to really dig into their story. After that, the plan is to work on Bound in Blue, book 3 in the Love Square series, which will focus on Jacob’s partner Mack.

Jessica grew up in Central New York. She spends her days as a Security Analyst at an IT consulting company. She spends her free time reading books and developing ideas for her own stories. Writing is her secret passion that she’s been fostering since elementary school, when she wrote her first book about a puppy. Writing has always been one of her secret dreams and she can't wait to share her stories with the world.

She currently lives in New York with her husband and three dogs.

Braine Reviews: Endless Knight by Kresley Cole

Series: The Arcana Chronicles 2
Format: Hardcover
Release Date: October 1, 2013
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Source: Author
Genre: YA-Fantasy
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository

In this seductive follow-up to Poison Princess, #1 New York Timesbestselling author Kresley Cole takes us deeper into the dark world of the Arcana Chronicles.

Shocking Secrets

Evie has fully come into her powers as the Tarot Empress, and Jack was there to see it all. She now knows that the teens who've been reincarnated as the Tarot are in the throes of an epic battle. It's kill or be killed, and the future of mankind hangs in the balance.

Unexpected Allies

With threats lurking around every corner, Evie is forced to trust her newfound alliance. Together they must fight not only other Arcana, but also Bagmen zombies, post-apocalyptic storms, and cannibals.

Gut-Wrenching Treachery

When Evie meets Death, things get even more complicated. Though falling for Jack, she's drawn to the dangerous Endless Knight as well. Somehow the Empress and Death share a history, one that Evie can't remember—but Death can't forget.

Well I'll be damned!

You're not seeing double and I didn't make one of my usual errors. I am giving ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole 2 Suped Up ratings because it was that frickin' good! I loved Poison Princess, I felt it's very original and a great genre crossing young adult novel so it's a no brainer that I'll definitely read the next book in the series. I'm not a big dystopia reader but KCole wove this amazing apocalyptic story that blew my mind. Reincarnated Tarot Arcana Cards in the middle of a war?! Very promising and KCole more than delivered! I won't bore you with the details because I'm sure you've read tons of reviews before this so I'll stick to the highlights.

It's a little over a year since the Flash and Evie & Co. are fighting for survival basically. So far they've been on the offense whether it's from Death's attacks or other Arcana Cards gunning for their heads. Despite laying on the down low, Evie's a target complete with a flashing neon sign because Death sent a broadcast to all surviving Arcanas that Evie's life is his for the taking and as most everyone dislike Death, and every Arcana would like to win this game, Evie just became the coveted boon. And a formidable boon at that. Evie is the Empress and that counts for a lot, she may have limited knowledge about the game and barely recalls her grandmother's lessons but Evie is a great strategist and even when things doesn't seem like the odds are in their favor, she still manages to tip the scales her way. The short is: Evie is an enchanting heroine and very unpredictable. Her loyalties are now conflicted meaning she might either be the world's liberator or its greatest slave master. Curiouser and curiouser.

Chapter 10
Jack and Evie fans, look out for chapter 10. One word to describe it is STEAMY and it just kept getting steamier from that point onward. A little uncanny for a typical young adult novel but ENDLESS KNIGHT isn't your usual teeny bopper novel. All bets are off and the world after the Flash is like a throw back to the Dark Ages, very medieval in some ways with the Arcana as war lords marching to the beat of their own drums. So the rules on propriety and other socio-political etiquette is blown to bits and for Evie, Jack and their crew, it's all about carpe diem and that includes romance.
He was the Endless Knight, an immortal killer. He probably preferred being alone, lacking the need for companionship that I had.
Death has a name.
And its name is Aric. Death is easily who we consider the villain in this storyboard but the book isn't called ENDLESS KNIGHT for nothing. Here we get to know Aric a little better and we soon come to discover that his motivation goes beyond winning this game. He's got something personal against Evie and he waited a long time to come face to face with the Empress again. Death is a cunning manipulator so expect plot twists and unfathomable alliances and heartbreaking betrayal to be added in the mix. KCole also did a complete anathema by humanizing him which makes it very complicated for Jack and Evie fans, I mean just look at the cover art! It's so telling! The tension between Aric and Evie is plain as day so yes, there's the dreaded love triangle which makes me a little wary for book 3. There's nothing like a slutty heroine to turn me off but I'm hoping Evie will grow to be a clever vixen and wheedle herself out of this sticky romantic mess she just found herself in.

In closing, ENDLESS KNIGHT and The Arcana Chronicles is a genre bending novel/series so shed any preconceived notions you have about young adult novels and its juvenile characters or even the dark landscape usually associated with post apocalyptic novels. Like I said, the world after KCole's Flash is like the Dark Ages, it's lawless, bloody, gory, very medieval and at times barbaric. It's not about a pair of lovers fighting for survival in a bleak and dark time, it's simply about survival period and any chance at love is a blessing but not a requirement. And though the leads are teens, they've risen to the occasion and have and will continue to give us a fantastic and compelling survival story.

P.S. I'm giving away a signed hardcover copy of ENDLESS KNIGHT, check our Halloween giveaway post to join.

Guest Blogger: Exotic & Salacious Reads

So excited to present you our guest blogger for this month! The sexxy Sharonda has been a Supie, and we

Thank you Beautiful for inviting me on over to Talk Supe!

So Braine wanted me show off some of the books in my um “exotic” book shelf *weg*. I can do that and will admit I have been on a search lately for reads that are a little more saucy…eclectic if you will.

Below are just some of the books that took me by surprise whether they were good or disappointing. Hmmmm, lets see.

M.J. Kane’s Butterfly Memoirs

The first two books are out…the third will be available later this year I believe.

What surprised bout these books wasn’t just the stark differences between the male & female leads. But it was the human elements that Ms Kane added to her stories. She gave you real life issues and embedded them there, you truly did want her characters to prevail at all costs. Also, the heroes weren’t ga-billionaires (yes, I know this is not a word)…we get that so much lately right? No…these dudes were just ordinary hard-working joes. I liked that so much, it was refreshing to read. I was like gah! Normal men..lols.

I just finished Violette Dubrinsky’s Colorblind.

Now, this story is what I been looking forward to read. A story of a French slave owner in a relationship with one of his slaves. It was that forbidden element of the story that I really wanted to get into. But this story also had a paranormal element to it too as both our hero & heroine are werewolves. This author gave me exactly what I wanted, a forbidden romance where Leon & Penny fought to be together in a time where is was just not allowed. Totally blew me away. I read it in one day. Plus he called her Ma Louve which meant my wolf *sigh & melts in a goo puddle*

Angel’s Wrath by S.K.

The book had a hard-nosed gansta attempting to get out of the game, get revenge on his dead beat father and have a working relationship with his lady love. But what I loved most about this book not only was Angelo a hard domineering male, he stayed that way though-out the book. This make didn’t automatically bow for his heroine. She wanted him out of the game faster than he can leave and he pretty much told he would leave we it was best for him to. And when she left him because of it, he didn’t automatically chase after her. SHE had to come back to him! Oh this man was…was…this book kinda left me speechless. You know how hard that is?

On to the books I thought I’ll say disappointed me. Any reader dislikes to be disappointed, but alas…it can’t be helped sometimes.

Canyon by Brenda Jackson

Ugh! What could have been a interesting read ending up being totally frustrating. The Westmorelands is a awesome long-going series, but this book just had my head spinning and the heroine was a whiny bitchy heffa, I just did not like her. I’ll just leave you to NeNe Leakes to give you a idea about what I felt about this one. I like strong heroines, but lawd don’t be shifty…shifty and bitchy.

The Bad Death by Naima Haviland

Although, the cover is smoking hot, this book did not give me what I was looking for. Don’t’ get me wrong, the authors writing was exceptional and she added more of a horror element to her vampires than romantic. But this was still suppose to be a paranormal romance. We didn’t get much of that and then I didn’t get that feeling of the hero and heroine fighting to be together, you know? It was more like “hey, well we’re here and attracted to each other, so let’s just do this thing”. Especial during the time of slavery with Julian being white and Anika being black, I wanted what I got in Colorblind and didn’t get it. It just wasn’t exciting enough for me and fell flat.

I could only come up with two. Well that’s it, just some of my latest fixations that have graced my ever-growing book shelf. Thank you again Braine for having me…I hope your Supies enjoy.

Thanks, sexxy momma for sharing your more exotic reads.
Stalk Sharonda if you want or like reading on a wild side!
