In the small town of Harden Fields, summer time seems to be the best time to set fire to old flames in this racy, heart-stopping romance.

Laney Oliver is ready to start a new life. Away from the small lonely town of Harden Fields, Alabama. Away from the pressures of her careless family. And away from the shadows of her broken heart. Laney is just beginning to heal after the love of her life shattered her perfect world, leaving her with no explanation. When the reason for her pain-stricken heart returns to Harden for the summer, she vows to stay away. But, she soon realizes that it may be easier said than done.

Jeremiah Cutler left Harden Fields in a rage, leaving his entire reason for existence behind. He knew that he was shattering Laney’s world, but he had to…there was no other way. Everything he did, he did for her… he just has to prove himself to her once again. Leaving Laney was a necessary fleet that he wishes he could take back, but staying away from her was never an option. Now, amidst his return, Jeremiah’s sole purpose is to win Laney’s trust back and to regain his forever at any cost.

THIS SIDE OF FOREVER by Christal Mosley is one hot Modern Family mess. Except it's not funny. The parents are messed-up and the kids are the collateral damage. Eight months ago Laney Oliver planned to escape her dysfunctional family and planned to elope with long-time boyfriend, Jeremiah Cutler. On D-day, Jeremiah failed to show up and Laney never heard from him again. Not a text, call, letter or even a haphazard note to explain why he just bounced. Then on the summer before Laney goes to college, Jeremiah came back to win her over and to finally tell her what really happened that morning eight months ago.

I'll start with the reasons why I didn't love THIS SIDE OF FOREVER.

Laney, Laney, Laney. Your boyfriend abandoned you and though you need closure, you should've given him a hard time for doing so! I get it, Jeremiah's your first love, your only love, your forever love and regardless of his reasons, you still went through eight months of hell and limbo. Now that he's back, make him work hard to win you back! You let him off the hook so easily, girl, that's a bad precedent. Guys can be idiots sometimes and more often than not, they conveniently "forget" important historical details like this and file it under forgive and forget and moving on. You gave him the nookie too soon!
I never knew how much pain nothing could cause. (Yup and you gave him the nookie!)
That said, the character development felt a little short IMO. Given that challenging relationship hump coupled with their respective family problems, Laney and Jeremiah's relationship should show signs of growth, it should've evolved and matured. Instead it felt stunted as if nothing happened, no consistent trust issues were displayed and their reconciliation was premature. Jeremiah's reasons for leaving was heartbreaking but when he was telling Laney the story, it felt like he was downplaying it or maybe trying to appear strong? But this is Laney, his forever love, someone he should feel safe with, enough to be vulnerable. Laney showed the necessary sympathy however I didn't feel like she made Jeremiah take full responsibility for the damage he did to their relationship, she came off as either being too passive or too nice and forgiving. Also, during the process of making up, Laney kept on blushing three, twenty-seven and eighteen shades of red which was really really starting to annoy me. Let out your inner goddess while you're at it, will ya! Smh!

Any maybe it's just me but for some reason Jeremiah constantly calling Laney baby didn't feel sexy at all. I guess I can't imagine him as a grown-up but more like Justin Bieber-ish, insincere and a little too slick for my taste.  Jeremiah didn't get full redemption in my eyes. He was too in your face and I feel like he didn't pay his dues properly. He took the physical, muscle and relational memory route, he knew Laney too well he knew how to work her. A simple touch, embrace and kiss and she's putty in his hands. Smh!

Now let me close this off with why I liked THIS SIDE OF FOREVER.

The family drama is epic! I don't know if I should laugh or get P.O.'d with Jeremiah and Laney's parents! They're selfish, manipulative and doesn't understand the concept of boundaries! I truly felt sad for Laney the most because she got the raw end of everybody's deal. I repeat, Laney needed a good, strong hissy fit, so big it'll shut everybody up and rock them to the core!

Aside from having crazy parents, Laney's sister is a little cray too. I only wished this sibling rivalry was explored better. On the other hand, Laney's friends are champs, Kasey and Jonah, Jeremiah's cousin, are super supportive of Laney. I also felt like there was something brewing beneath the surface between Laney and Jonah but it was gleaned over. But I have to say Laney and Jeremiah's love for each other is admirable, the fact that they found a way to move on quite easily is a testament to how their love is greater than the both of them. I have to give them that.
I am the luckiest guy in the world. Thank you for being my perfection in this mess of a life. You are my everything.
To sum up, THIS SIDE OF FOREVER is a quick and entertaining enough to read. IMO, it's more of MYA than NA, the main theme being the usual family issues associated with the genre. The reason why I only Liked it and didn't Love it is I didn't feel CMosley made this as emotionally driven as the premise hinted at. There were a few missed opportunities where the scene could've been more powerful, instead it felt passive and were left to the readers to determine what the characters aren't saying.

  5. Yeah, I would have wanted more from both characters when they began to get back together, and so need for him to be willing to make himself vulnerable when telling her why..oh and growth is a must. Wonderful review!

  6. This sounds like it had a lot of potential, and I think I would probably like it overall. But it is disappointing when the story seems to lack something. Nice review, Braine

  9. Fantastic review, Braine! Reading your review, I'd agree with your statement that the author didn't deliver the emotional punch promised. The synopsis sounds so promising. I'm glad that you liked it overall even if it didn't live up to your expectations.

Oh, and amen to making a guy grovel his way back into your good graces once he's done you wrong! ;) What are we teaching these girls?!?
