Eight years ago, life was good for Tate Reilly. Living in Atlanta and attending college, her dream of becoming a doctor was within reach, and she was in love with Ryan Hart. Then one night while Tate slept, Ryan disappeared. No note, no phone call, nothing left of a love she thought would last forever. Confused and heartbroken, she doesn’t let it hold her back in her quest to become a physician. If anything, the hurt and disappointment only serve to fuel her drive to succeed.

Ryan never wanted to leave Tate behind the way he did, but sometimes life takes away the choice. The best way to spare Tate the disruption of her bright future with his problems is to make a clean break. So he does the hardest thing he’s ever done—he walks away from her.

Now Ryan is back in Atlanta, working as a sous chef in the most popular restaurant in the city, and he has every intention of winning Tate back, no matter what it takes. It’s not easy because Tate wants answers that Ryan’s not ready to give just yet. First, he needs to remind her of what they once had together. The heat between them is undeniable, and it’s not long before it melts her resistance and she starts to lose the grip on her heart again.

But until Ryan can come clean with Tate about why he left, she can’t fully forgive him and move on. Time doesn’t always heal all wounds. Sometimes you have to shed more blood to become whole again.

If you've read the blurb, you'd understand why BURN by Jenny Lyn is such an intriguing short read. Eighty pages worth of pent-up angst, tension and make-up smex? Sign me up! And let me tell you, Tate and Ryan gave us heaping servings of good lovin'. But before they got to that part, there were a lot of scheming from Ryan's part to get Tate back. He knows that he was a jacka$$ for abandoning her eight years ago and he's aware that he can't just saunter back in her life. So to get Tate to cross his side, his game plan is to annoy Tate until she's so exasperated she'll hear him out. I found that plan annoying but totally cute!

Now it's Tate who let me down a little bit. Eight years without a word from Ryan. Eight years wondering what happened, speculating, picking apart every event that led to Ryan poofing out of her life like a ghost. And you gave up the nookie just like that?! Come on girl, you could've milked it and made him work for it. At least squeeze his balls until he confesses! Tate giving in to Ryan right away eased what could've been a tight tension between the two. I would've loved more verbal foreplay and lots of pathetic but funny plotting from Ryan before Tate gave in.

As for Ryan's secret, it's huge, heartbreaking, embarrassing, cruel and messy. No wonder he didn't want Tate to get involved. My only comment about this is I wish Ryan told Tate instead of some babbling friend who doesn't understand privacy and boundaries. This tattle tale blunted the drama and dulled what could've been an epic confrontation between Tate and Ryan. Despite these, BURN is a cool read, quick, romantic, sexy and engaging. It's one of those novellas where I wish it were longer so JLynn can flesh out the characters more, build-up the tension and add more drama to Tate and Ryan's reunion.

  1. Like you I prefer that he/she share the big secret with the other. This does sounds enjoyable despite the bumps!

    1. Personal stuff especially ones like this should come from the source.

  2. Now I want to know what his secret is but it def is frustrating he would tell a blabber mouth before Tate

  3. Seriously lol'ing over "At least squeeze his balls until he confesses!" hahaha <3

  4. "Come on girl, you could've milked it and made him work for it. At least squeeze his balls until he confesses! " <<---- I just busted out laughing while playing Chutes & Ladders!

This does look good despite the flaws. Thanks for the review!

  5. Mel & Andrea - Why am I not surprised that from everything I said, squeezing his balls is what resonated with you two...

  6. hmmm...I like the sound of this, maybe I'll check this out.

  7. I often find novellas leave me wanting more...I sometimes avoid them because of this. :( But Burn sounds pretty engaging, Braine, despite the issues you pointed out. (I totally agree Tate should have milked the situation a bit rather than just giving it up) I'm curious enough to give it a shot. ;)
