The first installment in a sexy new paranormal romance series by Larissa Ione, author of the bestselling Demonica series!

A WOMAN OUT FOR BLOOD
Nicole Martin was only eight years old when the vampire slaves rose up in rebellion and killed her family. Now she devotes her life to finding a vaccine against vampirism, hoping to wipe out her memories—along with every bloodsucker on the planet. But there’s one thing she cannot destroy: her searing, undeniable attraction for the one man she should hate and fear the most . . .

A VAMPIRE OUT FOR REVENGE
A member of the renegade vampire MoonBound Clan, Riker is haunted by demons of his own. When he recognizes Nicole and remembers how her family enslaved his loved ones, his heart burns for vengeance. But when he kidnaps Nicole and holds her in a secret lair, his mortal enemy becomes his soul obsession, his greatest temptation, and, perhaps, his only salvation—a hot-blooded lover who could heal him with her touch . . . or bury him forever.
My Larissa Ione cherry has finally been popped and boy, it was a wonderful experience! Her work is pretty popular in the UF/PNR world and now I can say that I've finally had a taste and it won't be the last. BOUND BY NIGHT is the first book in LIone's new series, MoonBound Clan Vampires. It's gritty, sexy and nail-biting. The world building has a dystopian feel to it and the myth is more science fiction than supernatural.

The World
The creation of vampires is the result of some experiment made by the government in the hopes of creating a super army. Eventually their lab rats became too powerful so they turned them into fangless (ouch!) slaves and some were corralled like animals for scientific study. Vampire their blood and make-up are used to cure diseases, reverse ageing and support other experiments humans can think of. And because of the inhumane treatment of their kind, a lot of vampires went underground and started rebelling. And this is the main premise of the series (I think). We know this set-up isn't going to work and it's only a matter of time before these vamps rise and show us humans who's on top of the food chain and that's exactly what started happening in BOUND BY NIGHT. To sum it up, it's a fucked-up world and I'm glad I don't live in it.

Nicole & Riker
Well there's no insta-love for these two. They hate each other for their own reasons but more importantly, Nicole inherited her father's corporation who's responsible for the continuous enslavement of vampires and their company is the leading manufacturer of vampire sourced drugs for humans. Nicole herself is one the lead scientists conducting experiments on how humans can benefit from vampires which makes her an instant target for them fang boys and gals. Aside from this inconvenient inheritance of Nicole's, her nanny was Riker's betrothed who was raped, violated and died as a slave in Nicole's house. However Nicole remembers that day differently, from what she recalls, it was Riker who trespassed into their home and killed his own fiancee. So huge miscommunication here and obviously they hate each other's guts despite their attraction for each other.

Alpha male, check!
Headstrong chick, check!
Tension, check!
Forbidden love, check!
Mayhem, check!

Looks good on paper but I didn't really connect well with Nicole and Riker as a couple however I liked the way they worked out their relationship. There's some mild Stockholm syndrome that went on between the two at first but eventually the power play evened out and they were able to wade through the mess and developed a real love match. What's even more interesting is Nicole single-handedly changed the game for everyone and it would be interesting to see where her allegiance will take the vampires in book 2, Chained by Night.

But despite my lukewarm response on the romance, the world building really made up for it from my standpoint, it's so sophisticated and savage at the same time. If you've seen the last season of True Blood with all the labs and experiments, BOUND BY NIGHT's world is a lot like that only better. You have rogue vampires fighting for their rights and freedom, oppressive humans who's greed for power is astounding and disgusting. Then you have the in-between, the collateral damage on this war being waged, the innocents who are trying to keep their head down, stay neutral and simply survive. It's the human interest part and violent world that captured my attention and made me love BOUND BY NIGHT. It's a vampire PNR with a bite and I mean that in so many different way I'm sure you won't mind getting bitten.
"I should hate you, but instead, I'm attracted to you, which is beyond twisted,"

"Maybe my magic vagina will cure you of all the traumatic acts my family has inflicted on you."

"I'm saying I believe you love me, and I don't want to be apart anymore. And it only took twento shots of Kool-Aid flavors that should never be mixed, imaginary chest pain, and girl talk with a female vampire and male vampire who play Go Fish when everyone else is playing Five-Card Stud."

  2. Man, I am kicking myself. I received a review copy of this, and thought it was the last in a long series (not sure why I thought that) and gave it away. I've always wanted to read an Ione book. Guess I'll just by a copy.
    Thanks for the review!

  7. I haven't read any of her books yet either, but I probably have some around here. It's almost amazing to find a review of a book of hers that's actually the first in a series! I'd consider reading this one for sure!

  8. I've read one of her Demonica books and adored it (despite not caring for the heroine). Your review makes me wonder if I ought to stick with the demons though. I'm not sure I'd be as forgiving about not connecting with the couple.

  10. Oh I love her books. I'm so going to have to try this one out. It sounds like such a great set up for the series even if the romance was only so-so.
