His touch spirals through me, warm and sweet, wicked and hot. I shouldn’t trust him. I shouldn’t tell him my secrets. But how do I not when he is the reason I breathe? He is what I need.

At the young age of eighteen, tragedy and a dark secret force Lara to flee all she has known and loves to start a new life. Now years later, with a new identity as Amy, she’s finally dared to believe she is forgotten–even if she cannot forget. But just when she lets down her guard, the ghosts of her past are quick to punish her, forcing her back on the run.

On a plane, struggling to face the devastation of losing everything again and starting over, Amy meets Liam Stone, a darkly entrancing recluse billionaire, who is also a brilliant, and famous, prodigy architect. A man who knows what he wants and goes after it. And what he wants is Amy. Refusing to take “no” as an answer, he sweeps her into a passionate affair, pushing her to her erotic limits. He wants to possess her. He makes her want to be possessed. Liam demands everything from her, accepting nothing less. But what if she is too devastated by tragedy to know when he wants more than she should give? And what if there is more to Liam than meets the eyes?

ESCAPING REALITY is Lisa Renee Jones' first New Adult novel and Amy Bensen is a heroine you'd want to follow. My understanding is that Amy Bensen (formerly, Lara) is in some sort of mission and from the bits and pieces she shared about herself, it also seems like she's hiding. From who or what, we still don't know but there is someone who she refers to as her "handler", supplying her with money, instructions and an apartment to complete this assumed identity. What we know about Amy is that her parents died tragically and she suspects that the people who are possibly after her are responsible for her mom and dad's passing. It also appears as if Amy has temporary amnesia and would sporadically remember pieces of her past triggered by random things. So basically, we still don't know jack squat about Lara or Amy in this book, everything is just pure speculation at this point. That's how mysterious she is.

Liam Stone, billionaire recluse, is a dude who Amy met on a plane and he immediately took a shine on her. Amy, so consumed by Liam's attraction to her, easily submitted to his desires, allowing him to push her sexual limits to new heights. Liam is gorgeous, jealous, over protective and every bit of an alpha. I didn't really connect to him because I find him too domineering, extremely intense. Liam eventually assumed total control over Amy's life, acting like a Dom through and through from his jealous rages to possessive attitude. Bottom line is Liam isn't like any new adult hero I've ever encountered. There's nothing juvenile or impulsive about him, he's not very funny either, he strikes me as a very calculating guy and it seems like his acquaintance with Amy isn't random but intentional.

ESCAPING REALITY has a great romantic suspense element to it. The main characters have big and damning secrets they're protecting and even the secondary characters are part of a bigger conspiracy against Amy. I feel like there are powerful puppet masters pulling the strings behind the scenes and trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together is making me frustrated! LRJones is very good in writing clever mysteries and ESCAPING REALITY is no exception. I know that there's more to the story and the throbbing suspense is killing me! I need the second book NOW!

My conundrum about this novel is how familiar the feel and flavor of the story is. ESCAPING REALITY is very much like LRJones' erotica series, Inside Out Trilogy  and Rebecca's Lost Journals. I guess I was expecting something different not only because this is a new novel but also because of its genre classification. I'm not a big new adult reader but I can assure you that ESCAPING REALITY is nothing like the crazy, angsty, stupid love we identify the new adult genre with. The Secret Life of Amy Bensen is erotic, sexual and a complete mind-fuck some of you will probably pull your hair out because of the layered mysteries and conspiracies. I repeat, we still don't know jack squat about Amy, I had more questions by book's end than I had when I started the book! It's like a bit WHAT?!  Here's the thing though, I know it'll all come together and start making sense in book 2 but the formula is very Inside Out, hot characters, lots of sex, loads of mysteries and very few answers.

Overall I enjoyed reading ESCAPING REALITY despite its striking resemblance to LRJones' adult series. For a new adult novel, I feel like its totally different from the usual family-drama and/or the bloom first serious love. LRJones is bringing her own stamp on the genre, turning up the heat and pushing the boundaries to a different level. Fans of LRJones and Inside Out Trilogy won't be disappointed and I recommend this book to fans of erotica fiction who'd want to give the new adult genre a try.

  2. This is such a great review. I honestly didn't know much about the book before, and it seems like reading the book doesn't shed much light. Honestly, it feels like there's maybe too much going on in Escaping Reality. And I really like the Inside Out Trilogy, but am not sure I just wsnt another version of that.
Again, thanks for the helpful review!

  9. I felt that it read a little to close to her Inside Out Trilogy too. Also, I didn't have that NA feel to it...definitely more of an adult erotic touch to the story. Great review Braine :)

    1. Gosh I was getting paranoid, I though I was the only one who thought so! Yes it wasn't your typical NA, it's like NA - erotica! Very dark with all the lies and shady personalities.

      Thanks, Sexiness!
