Hope Jones has two problems: one is new, the other is depressingly old.

The new problem: the bestselling author the publisher she shoots romance novel covers for hates her newest batch of covers. She has until the end of the week to come up with a breathtaking shot or she’ll be replaced. And there’s a sudden model shortage; they’re out of season.

The old, depressing problem: she hasn’t had a date, sex or a relationship in over two years.
She also has one hell of a headache.

Hope finds the cures for her two problems during a search through Wal-Mart for a painkiller to kill her headache.

Turns out the aisles of the retail giant are rampant with hot young model worthy specimens. And when her trusty Ford Taurus breaks down in the parking lot, a hunky mechanic in the Tire and Lube Express department fixes more than just her car.

Seemingly her troubles are good as gone…but then her new, fabulous cover is rejected, and in a desperate moment she has to choose between keeping her job and keeping the man she’s just starting to fall in love with.

Alice Bello's debut novella, HOPE BREAKS, was both fun and sexy. The blurb is very succinct in giving us a concise snapshot of what this 118 page story is all about. Hope Jones is 26yo, single,  pretty, funny, desperate, talented and unabashed heroine. Things got interesting for her after she went to Wal-Mart to get migraine medicine and well, the rest is in the blurb pretty much. On this chapter I kept thinking why this never happened to me!? Why can't our local Wal-Mart, Publix and Kroger stores not hire good-looking, modelesque men? It will bring a whole new meaning to shopping for eggs and fresh meat.

The plot, conflict and resolution of HOPE BREAKS is very simple. It's centripetal to Hope's job and her budding romance with hunky mechanic, Jake Troy. After Jake fixed Hope's car, the story instantly shifted to romance. I like their version of speed dating so they can consume their attraction without breaking dating rules and having remorse in the morning. I love how Jake is unassuming but cocky and how Hope is a slutty go-getter. HOPE BREAKS is very forthcoming in terms of motive without sacrificing romantic and sexual tension.

The conflict is a little predictable but it also works with the premise ABello created. Making it too complex won't fit with the simplicity of the plot. As for the resolution, we have to wait for the next book, Hope Entangles. ABello cut HOPE BREAKS on the part when Hope and Jake are about to start something good because of Hope's desperation which led to an error in judgment.

I don't know what the title of the series is but HOPE BREAKS is a fun and lovely debut to a planned trilogy. I love the flow of the story and how ABello kept it simple, not a lot of characters, basic scenes, great dialogue and smoldering tension. She focused on the emotional undercurrents so the focus is on Hope and Jake's chemistry and the possible unraveling of their would-be romance. I look forward to reading Hope Entangles soon!
The saddest thing in the world is to watch someone walk away who has just left you. You watch as the distance between your body and theirs grow.

Purchase Hope Breaks

  • I have a dog (a Jack Russell named Jack)
  • I’m lethally single (thus my romance addiction)
  • I’m a Buffy the Vampire Slayer addict. (and had a big girl crush on Willow)
  • I’m a slob.
  • I waste huge parts of my day recommending books, reading books, and watching Whoppi Goldberg movies with my mother (I live a daring life.)

Let me introduce myself. I'm forty--which isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I live to read and love to write. I love romance, comedy, brooding and sparkly vampires, and I love pizza. I have a dog named Jack, and I work somewhere I have to wear a blue top and brown pants (you can probably guess).

I've just written my first romance. Erotic, funny, about 35,000 words, so it's a novella, and hopefully a good one. I'm working to get it reviewed while I write the second part. I'm planning on having three 30,000 words novellas in the series.

Hope Breaks

Hope Entangles

Hope Rises

Wish me luck!

I do have to agree with you Braine, I wish Wal-Mart has these kind of employees (; it looks like a great book, I'll have to ssh it to my never ending pile and see about getting to it soon.

  2. A slutty go-getter huh? I think I want to meet her, she sounds fun!

    1. Yeah, I lived vicariously through her for a moment there.
