I should have been paying attention. Growing up on the run from religious fanatics gave me more than a few good reasons to be careful, but I was just too tired to be as vigilant as I should have been. My mind was occupied with my latest case—a missing nine year old girl. I was usually good at my job, but sometimes I needed a little extra help from magick. I always managed to track down a cheating spouse or the occasional runaway, but now it seemed more children were missing from the streets of Seattle and nothing I did worked.

A cat jumped on my shoulder and jerked me from my exhaustion induced stupor. I spun into a defensive crouch only to see the cat had landed on the sidewalk behind me.

Time seemed to stop for a moment when the cat spoke.

My name is Jocelyn Matthews and if I live through tonight, I’ll tell you all about my life as a witch.

For the past ten years, Jocelyn has been living as a closet witch in Seattle. When the Inquisitors that have been after her from the time she was nine finally manage to find her, Jocelyn is thrust into a world she never guessed existed. From talking cats to dark elves, she'll have to do something she's never done before: trust someone other than herself. If she wants to find the children that have been going missing all over the city, she'll have to open her eyes to the bigger picture and find her place, not only for her safety but for the city as well.

Just when I get a chance to get caught up on some sleep! So, James is rather shy and woke me up to talk about the spells you’re asking for. Lemme get some coffee first… Shut it James! You’re worse than me when it comes to coffee, and you’re the one that’s too chicken to talk to all these nice people! You can freaking wait. You realize Mateo is going to kill me if he finds out I did this interview, right?

*sips her coffee happily* Okay, that’s better.

In case you don’t know, or haven’t met me yet, my name is Jocelyn Matthews. I’ve been living in Seattle for most of my life as a closet witch.

Before Mateo showed up, everything I knew about Wicca and witchcraft came from books and the internet. I even tried joining a coven once but…well our views on the Goddess differed, as did our views on the necessity for clothing. Widely. But that’s a story for another day. Over drinks – a lot of drinks.

Now, first on the list is a love spell. I’m sorry, but I can’t help you out with that one. It’s not that love spells don’t exist. I’m sure they do, but as a follower of the Goddess, I believe in the adage: Do No Harm.

You may be thinking what harm can a love spell do? Love isn’t bad.

You’re right. The world could use a little more love, but casting a spell on someone that forces them to love you takes away their free will. What if they love someone else? What if by forcing them to love you, you are missing out on a deep and true love from someone else? Love freely given is a gift. If it's forced then you never really know if they loved you at all. There are repercussions to messing with someone’s free will. Like ripples in a pond, the effects can be far reaching. It’s kind of like that whole theory about a butterfly farting in Hawaii causing a hurricane in Florida or something.

Next up was a cleansing spell, right? There are any number of cleansing spells to choose from, depending on what it is you’re trying to purify. The simplest way is to take a broom... What? You thought they were just a part of the shtick? Witches use brooms for flying around on? Please! They do have a practical purpose, you know.

As I was saying, take your broom and sweep the area you need cleansed from west to east. Collect the debris and burn it, tossing the ashes outside and away from the area you just cleansed. Burning a white sage smudge stick is a great spiritual cleanser. Thousands of years of Native American tradition can’t be wrong.

The last spell you asked for was a location spell. Again, it depends on what it is you’re trying to locate. Since the spell for locating people is covered in James’ book, I’ll go over locating an object.

Mateo recently taught me that my location spells will be stronger if I do them inside a circle. You can cast a salt circle or you can use candles. You use four candles, preferably blue; a wide mouth cup or bowl of water three quarters full; and any of the following incenses: camphor, jasmine, sandalwood, or thyme. They all represent water and will help with the spell. Place all four candles around you within arms’ reach, one at each meridian point. Sit in the middle of your circle, facing the direction of your nearest ocean, and place the bowl of water in front of you. Light the four candles, starting with the one nearest the ocean followed by the others in a clockwise direction, and then light the incense.

Take your middle finger and the second finger on your dominant hand and swirl the water clockwise slowly, starting and ending with the direction closest to the ocean. Concentrate on the lost item, visualizing it in your mind. Repeat the incantation while you visualize.

What is lost must now be found,

take my luck and turn it around.

What is lost must now be found,

take my luck and turn it around.
What is lost must now be found,
take my luck and turn it around.
What is lost must now be found,
take my luck and turn it around.
I now invoke the law of three,
What once was lost be revealed to me.
Staring deep into the swirling water of the bowl should reveal the location of the lost item.

You can also adapt the scrying method in I use in James’ book Andromeda Rising to find lost items. Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error to find the spell that works best for you. Spells are something you need to feel connected to for them to work. Of course it helps if you are a Danaan, a natural witch. But don’t tell Mateo that I told you what I am. It’s too early for me to deal with one of his lectures.

What is there to say?

Mom always said I was creative. (I know, she has to say that) I have been a rabid book junkie since…well birth. True story. I blame grandpa. He owned a bookstore which is like winning a literary lover’s lottery! My earliest memories are of paging through a book as mom drove me to grandma’s house to be babysat while mom was at work. It was a forty-five minute commute at best so a change of clothes was generally required because I refused to put the book down even though it made me car-sick to read. Yeah I was addicted. Again, I blame grandpa.

All my life I could be found with a book in my hand. Now with the invention of the e-reader I can take an entire library with me.

Eventually my income fell short of my desire for new reading material and I turned to writing. Hopefully you’ll enjoy going on my adventures with me.
