Writer Wrangler: Heather Hildenbrand

Thanks so much to Talk Supe for having me today and kicking off Imitation’s release and blog tour! The tour goes through 3/28 and the complete schedule is listed on my blog here so you can go enter to win all kinds of free stuff each day and catch some sneak peeks of the book in a few places as well.

Today, I am sharing some of the music that inspired Imitation. If you want the entire playlist, you can subscribe to it on Spotify. Here are a few of the top picks that I love for this story.

Whirlpool, Leaves in the River, The Cold, the Dark, and the Silence by Sea Wolf
This band is one of my favorites to write to because it’s so mellow and makes great background music. Kind of like what would be playing if this book were a movie. It also feels a little dark at the edges, which fits my story.

“…I know you well enough to know you can’t be alone.”

The Cold, the Dark, and the Silence is a great song for the Authentic Raven.

Some Nights by Fun
“…What do I stand for? Most nights, I don’t know, anymore.”

I think this is the question that haunts Ven. She questions everything. And has to decide which side she will stand on. Doing what she’s told or doing what she believes in.

She’s So Mean by Matchbox 20
This song makes me think of Taylor and her kind of Authentic. The glittering outfits, fake smiles, and evil that lurks just beneath the surface of those that call themselves a friend.

Hannah by Freelance Whales
“…. And if you’re partial to the night sky. If you’re vaguely attracted to rooftops. Hannah takes the stairs ‘cause she can’t tell that it’s a winding spiral case. Is she right-side-up or upside-down?”

This song is so fun and silly and whimsical but it’s also about a connection that exists before the other person even realizes it. And it’s born out of a mutual appreciation for wide open space.  Makes me think of Linc and Ven.

I Was Here by Beyonce
This one is all about wanting to leave your mark in the biggest, most meaningful way possible for the time you’re here. This is what Ven struggles with. She wants to matter. And she wants to leave her mark. To make her life mean something.

Falling In by Lifehouse
“… Every time I see your face, my heart takes off on a high speed chase. Don’t be scared, it’s only love that we’re falling in. I can’t wait ‘til tomorrow. This feeling has swallowed me whole. And know that I’ve lost control. This heart that I’ve followed has left me so hollow. That was then, this is now. Yeah you have changed everything…  I would never do you wrong or let you down or lead you on.”

This is a great description of the feelings between Ven and Linc. Before him, she felt hollow. And incapable of feeling something this strong. So it’s overwhelming and scary for her. And also  kind of exciting to discover the different feelings that come with falling for someone. Sounds a little like real life.

My Kind of Love by Emeli Sande
“…Don’t ever question if my heart beats only for you. It beats only for you. ‘Cause when you’ve given up, when no matter what you do it’s never good enough, when you never thought that it could ever get this tough, that’s when you feel my kind of love.”

This is Linc and Ven. Beautiful.
Emeli Sande is currently one of my favorites. Her voice and her music are amazing. (She also wrote several of the songs on Alicia Keys’ new album. She’s so talented!) Also, if you haven’t seen the video for this one, you need to. It’s gorgeous and heartbreaking.

Accendo Press
Everyone is exactly like me.
There is no one like me.
The rough fabric of my cotton nightgown chafes so I lie very still. They say my discomfort comes from being built like one accustomed to niceties. How is that fair when I myself have never experienced anything but copies of the real thing?
My entire life is an imitation.
I am an Imitation.
I’ve been here five years. Training. Preparing. Waiting.
And now I have a letter.
My assignment has begun.
I am a prisoner.
I am not Raven Rogen.
I am here to die.
