Dyletri, God of Fertility, has locked away his powers. No woman is allowed to touch him, not until he can return his long-dead lover back to life. All he has to do is sacrifice one human girl, a girl who unlocks his powers and rips his dormant lust right out of his body. Trapped by his promise, Dyletri has no choice but to watch Ismini die, no matter how much he wants her.

Yet the darkness of his calling is spiraling within him, demanding he claim the human as his. If he goes back on his promise, the energy of the Fates will cause untold destruction in the Universe. That doesn’t change how Dyletri’s begun exhibiting symptoms that point to more than just lust. How does he allow Ismini to die when she’s come to own him from the inside out?

Desire and torment spiral into something much darker than obsession, more turbulent than an addiction, and something much more brutal than a mere soul-mating. As a war is being rekindled right under his nose, Dyletri will have to come to terms with a destiny eleven thousand years in the making. He thought he’d known what path his future would take, but he’d been wrong. Now the one woman he truly loves might pay the price for his decision.

Blood Flows Deep in the Empire is the first in a series that will pit free-will against Destiny, Destiny against Fate, and love against brutal desire. Everyone likes to think they have a choice as to who they end up with, but as they rise to face the greatest threat they’ve ever known, even the Gods will learn they have to bend to Destiny’s whim to survive.

BLOOD FLOWS DEEP IN THE EMPIRE is the debut in N. Isabelle Blanco's brand new series, The Szolites. I'm a myth junkie and aside from decent adaptations on classical pantheons, I have a bigger appreciation for authors who take the time to create their own myth, shape it right and execute it seamlessly. And that, my Supies, is what NIBlanco did with her lovely Szolites. When I saw the glossary at the start of the novel I got excited because I know it'll be a great read as far as the myth and world building is concerned. This unique pantheon can be likened to their Greek or Celt counterparts, the Gods & Goddesses are entitled, a little narcissistic, self-righteous, vulnerable, capricious, perfect and a very addicting bunch.

The world building was kept simple but nonetheless beautiful as NIBlanco tells the story alternating between our world and The Ritrio's domain, Enzyria. Aside from the unusual proper names, it's quite easy to get a good grasp of the Universe NIBlanco created. It wasn't too fantastical for my imagination but it wasn't the "usual" either. NIBlanco made sure that her story is unique enough to remember but light enough for the story to be character-centric. And speaking of characters, both the main and secondary characters are well-wrought, every one of them as fascinating as the next with their own distinct personalities setting up the succeeding eight books NIBlanco is planning for the series.

Dyletri leads and introduces the pack. As the God of Fertility you'd know there'll be some intense and B.o.B. friendly scenes here. Aside from the bedroom gymnastics, Dyletri is indeed a wise choice to launch the series. His backstory is the perfect backdrop to acquaint us with his pantheon, their powers and their relevance in the world NIBlanco created. The blurb is very succinct in summarizing his story and in addition to that, Dyletri is as Male as it can get. Setting aside his godly powers, the man is stubborn, a little douche-y at first, possessive and oh-so gorgeous with a touch of brokenness to complete the package.
And wasn't that a head-fuck? Not only was he in love with the woman he'd sentenced to die eleven thousand years earlier, he was also certain she was his mate. He could not only mourn her death, he would most likely be consumed with it.
Ismini Harrovnian for her part is very feminine, a little bit of a martyr, she's on the naive side, soft, passionate and loyal. I didn't really connect with her much because there's a lot about her that remains in the dark. Sticking to the blurb so as not to give out spoilers, it felt like she was just dropped front row center in this brewing war. We weren't given much backstory about her person aside from the fact that she's been aware of her destiny since she was 6yo and has been preparing to be sacrificed since then. A little depressing really. On a more subjective note, I like my PNR heroines snarky and though Ismini might not be a shrinking violet, she's not as fiery as I want her to be. Her bestie, Evesse Salazar, on the other hand is my kind of girl and I can't wait to read her story.

Now the conflict is what gave BLOOD FLOWS DEEP IN THE EMPIRE flesh and fire. The dilemma Dyletri and Ismini is a lose-lose situation. Dyletri has been on this quest for eleven thousand years that his reasons has now become more of an ideology than his passion. Enter Ismini, a girl whose been inlove with the Fertility God for a long time and though her passion for him is all consuming she knows she can't have him for he belongs to another. But Fate plays her hand and had these two people falling for each other. But to choose Ismini is to allow the world to fall apart and to lose her might as well be Dyletri's death.

These two people's character development, to me, was fleshed out well. NIBlanco truly highlighted Dyletri's choice and internal conflict, Ismini's unconditional love for the God and the emotional tug-of-war these two had to go through before they find their HEA. Aside from the wonderful love story, the action sequences are great too! So if you're looking for a new PNR/Erotica series to try and follow, I suggest you add BLOOD FLOWS DEEP IN THE EMPIRE to your growing list.
