Writer Wrangler + Giveaway: Nyrae Dawn

Braine: Tell us something about Games that we won't find in the book blurbs?

Nyrae Dawn: Despite the blurb mentioning Colt’s mom being sick, I’ve found a lot of people expected a light read. It’s emotional. It’s the only book I’ve ever written where I broke down and cried while writing it.

Braine: What book/s influenced you and your writing the most?

Nyrae Dawn: I’m a huge fan of authors like CK Kelly Martin, Mindi Scott, and a few others that I think really nail male POV. They inspire me a lot. Also authors with beautiful language like Sarah Ockler, Jenny Han, and Gayle Foreman.

Braine: These names are new to me, I love reading books in the male POV too. I find it to more to the point. Which line from CHARADE is your favorite?

Nyrae Dawn: “My face is in his neck and I think if I was going to cry, this would be the perfect place to do it.”

Braine: Oh, that's so understated by powerful. Can you describe CHARADE in one word?

Nyrae Dawn: Growth.

Braine: Was your own New Adult phase similar to that of your characters?

Nyrae Dawn: No… I have been with my husband since I was eighteen and we were already pretty settled down.

Braine: Congratulations! Mine wasn't as peachy. Like your character Cheyenne, have you ever felt or had the need for a "fake boyfriend"?

Nyrae Dawn: In a way. This probably makes me sound really desperate, but when I was like sixteen, I had a HUGE crush on a boy. My friend sent me flowers on Valentines day as a secret admirer to try and make him jealous. LOL. Should I have admitted that?

Braine: LOL Well  now we know that Cheyenne's "need" came from a real place. Don't worry, I don't think you're the only girl who ever did that. What is it about CHARADE that readers will find compelling?

Nyrae Dawn: I think that it’s honest. Its real, IMO. I don’t sugarcoat, Colt. That’s what I went for. Honest and raw. Maybe I should have used one of those as my one word earlier!

Braine: Growth are those too, in fact that's the hardest and most painful transition one goes through IMO. Can you share a little trivia with us regarding the conception of your characters?

Nyrae Dawn: Inspiration… Hmmm. I would say Cheyenne, which is funny considering Colt is who I ended up being closest to. The book started out only in Cheyenne’s POV and it was HER story. She came to me first and I saw this broken girl and needed to give her a happily ever after. A few chapters in I knew Colt was just as special and his story needed to be told too.

Braine: I think a lot of your fans are glad you went with Colt's POV instead. There isn't a lot of contemporary books out there in the male POV. What's are you writing next?

Nyrae Dawn: I’m working on FAÇADE right now It’s a companion book to CHARADE. FAÇADE is Colt’s friend Adrian’s story.

Braine: She's working on it people, be patient! What book did you recently purchase?

Nyrae Dawn: Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Braine: Ooh I heard that's a good book too. Aside from your books, what other New Adult novel or series do you recommend?

Nyrae Dawn: I love Lengths by Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt. Also really enjoyed Easy.

Braine: Thanks for stopping by, Nyrae!

Writing has always been Nyrae Dawn’s passion. There have been times in her life where she wasn’t able to chase that dream the way she desired, but she always found her way back to telling stories.

One of her loves has always been writing about teens. There’s something so fresh and fun about the age that she loves exploring. Her husband says it’s because she doesn’t want to grow up. She doesn’t think that’s such a bad thing and luckily for her, he doesn’t either.

Nyrae gravitates toward character-driven stories. She loves going on emotional journeys with characters whether it be reading or writing. And yes, she’s a total romantic at heart and proud.

Nyrae resides in sunny Southern California with her husband (who still makes her swoon) and her two awesome kids.

When she’s not with her family, you can be pretty sure you’ll find her with a book in her hand or her laptop and an open document in front of her.
