Passion is blind in vengeance and love
Ayden’s suburban home was invaded by a pack of Lycans.
The brutal attack is the only memory she carries of her former life.
Now, one motive burns in her soul:
KILL THEM ALL.
The Sons of Wrath—a brood of vengeance-dealing warrior demons—band with Ayden to hunt the Lycans on Detroit’s most deadly feeding grounds.
Kane Walker should’ve been her easiest kill.
Unfortunately, the newly bitten Lycan has something she wants—clues that may finally lay her past to rest. To reach them, she must be willing to submit to the sensual pleasures awakened by his touch.
Time is running out.
In seven days, Kane will become what Ayden despises most. She can halt his transformation but the antidote requires the ultimate sacrifice. As the beast takes hold, Kane becomes more of a threat.
Ayden must choose between her lust for revenge, or surrender to her enemy and discover a horrible truth.
Sons of Wrath
Never gamble with vengeance
I think I struck gold this week, and I don't want to jinx it, but I've really read some awesome books lately. Leading the pack is Keri Lake's SOUL AVENGED, book one of her latest PNR/UF series, Sons of Wrath. At 500+ pages, I have to admit it was a little intimidating at first especially since I started reading the book at the last hour before our stop. I'm so happy that it wasn't even an issue because I just flew through the thing. There were no Meh moments, well aside from an annoying minor character's pity party, but other than that SOUL AVENGED is riddled with fast paced Lycan killing, high speed chases with a heaping dose of ultra sexy MEN. Extra large and extra juicy!
Ayden is an Alexi, a group of superhumans dedicated in killing Lycans. She defected from her group after suffering from a string of abuse from her mentor and Alexi leader, Wade. As an extra precaution she hired the Sons of Wrath to protect her. The Sons are Demons of vengeance, exacting retribution from the people who harmed their clients. In one of their haunts Ayden crossed paths with Kane Walker, a human bitten by a Lycan and in the cusp of Change. Instead of killing him Ayden decided to keep the halfling because of some memory transfer of sorts that happened between them. Ayden believes that whoever bit Kane is responsible for her "human death" and finding this rabid Lycan just became her first priority. It just so happen that Ayden fell in love with Kane, a Lycan, a species she's trained to kill, along the way. Yup! Complicated.
The Sons of Wrath are one sexy demon brood. I know demons aren't supposed to be sexy but KLake managed to make these brothers so. They're not strictly evil, if I were to classify them I'd put them in the same category as the famed Horsemen. Necessary evils to keep things in check and in harmonious balance. They're literally brothers from different mothers and their loyalty to each other matched with biting comebacks and eccentric personalities were the perfect side stories. A little reminiscent of BDB. Special mention to Gavin. Lord have mercy! Aside from his name and demeanor, I pictured him as Gavin Rossdale when he played Balthazar in the movie Constantine and I was getting all worked up every time he's in a scene. I want this Demon! Bad!
As for Ayden and Kane, maybe it's the cover but they remind me so much of Selene and Michael, the forbidden vampire-lycan relationship in the hit movie franchise, Underworld. But seriously, what could be more intriguing than a budding romance between a Lycan and a Slayer?! The tension between these two was imminent and slow burning and when they can no longer deny their attraction for each other, man they set my Kindle on fire! Until the end very end, KLake held off their HEA and for a minute there I was afraid that they won't find it.
My only gripe over SOUL AVENGED is, for a manor filled with demons, I expect their security system, both electronic and magical, to be more competent. I can't believe that an over eager Alexi, a human, was able to infiltrate their "fortress". Maybe Bennett, the Sons' Troll butler, is in need of a vacation or a raise.
SOUL AVENGED is a solid PNR/UF tale and if this is the preview of the series then I want more! The world building was detailed, the glossary in the beginning should give you a fair hint of how great it is. KLake was meticulous with the details without being wordy despite its length. She really did well in introducing the characters, making sure that each one of them could hold their own. The emotional and psychological aspect of the story was down pat which explains why reading SOUL AVENGED didn't drag and felt like a chore like other long-ass book. I want to learn more about these crazy ass Sons, their extensive backstories that span centuries. Their respective redemption and their journey as they seek and fight for their Tazschla, their future mates. It's going to be an interesting ride.
Keri Lake, you just got yourself another SoW groupie.
Favorite Quotes"How old are you no?" Ayden shifted in the seat. "A ripe buck fifty?"
He [Gavin] frowned and took a long swill of his drink. "Six hundred twenty five, thank you very much." He cleared his throat.
"Wow. And you still have all your teeth,"
"You're... the elusive prey. The one I never want to catch for fear I'd never hunt again," [Ayden to Gavin]
Sure, he'd been blindfolded and fucked before, but never by an actual kidnapper. [Kane]
"Ayden, I would give anything in this world to wake up to your beautiful face again and again." [Kane]
