Guest Post: Sherri Hayes and the Daniels Brothers

Marilyn Daniels took the second batch of wings out of the oven, and dumped them unceremoniously onto a serving tray. If it were for anyone but her boys and husband, she would have taken more care in arranging them. They, however, wouldn’t spare the food she’d made more than a glance before devouring it.

She smiled as she picked up the wings, along with a tray of nachos, and carried both out to the living room where everyone was huddled around the television. All her boys had come home for Superbowl weekend…even her baby, Gage. The other three of her boys came home regularly, but with Gage living further away, and his hectic schedule, it was harder for him to get home.

“Hey, Ma.”

At Paul’s greeting, the other four men in the room turned their focus for all of two seconds away from the football game they were watching. Chloe, Paul’s little girl, looked up from her dad’s lap and gave Marilyn a toothy grin. Her heart fluttered. Chloe was an angel. In many ways, she’d saved her father after her mother, Melissa died. Without Chloe, Marilyn had no idea where her oldest would be today. She doubted it would involve him sitting here on her couch yelling at a football game with his brothers.

“Ah, come on,” Chris yelled. “What kind of a throw is that?”

“He got nervous. Threw too soon.”

“You just wish you were out there yourself, Gage.”

“Next year.”

Marilyn laid the food down on the coffee table, trying to stay out of their line of sight.

“Thanks, Ma.”

“Perfect. I’m starving.”

“You just ate dinner an hour ago, Trent. How can you be hungry?”

Trent shoved several nachos in his mouth, chewed, and then smiled at his father. “Growing boy.”

All three of his brothers snorted.

Marilyn took a seat near her husband. Every now and then, she’d get up to refill the food for her boys, but for the most part, she sat back and watched. She watched some of the game, sure, but mostly Marilyn paid attention to her family. This was a rare occasion, and she wanted to enjoy it. All her boys were home. They were happy and healthy. What more could a mother ask for?

Sherri is the author of several novels, and a short story, A Christmas Proposal. She lives in central Ohio with her husband and three cats. Her mother fostered her love for books at a young age by reading to her as a child. Stories have been floating around in her head for as long as she can remember; however, she didn’t start writing them down until she was thirty. It has become a creative outlet that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found helping her husband in his woodworking shop.
