Girl Crush Mondays: Lavender Seelie

Lavender enters the coffee shop a little warily, taking in her surroundings in a glance, but she offers me a warm smile when she sees me waiting in the cozy area by the cafĂ©’s fireplace. I chose this location specifically because it reminded me of the description of the interior of Seth’s cabin, and I wanted to make sure she felt as comfortable as possible. It seems to work. She appears much more at ease as she takes the seat across from me—the one facing the door.

Braine: Hi Lavender, you have no idea how excited I am to be interviewing you today.

Lavender: My pleasure. Sorry I’m a little late. Seth and I— (She blushes a little as she attempts to smooth out a visible wrinkle in the front of her asymmetrical gray skirt, but she can’t help grinning.) Well, you know…full moon and all that.

(Now it’s my turn to blush. Having heard about the effects the full moon can have on the sexual prowess of a mated werewolf, I quickly get on with the interview.)

Braine: So, first of all, I just want to say you're my favorite Tale Person or Transplant... you know what I mean... and your crazy antics are just hilarious! Thank you for picking us for your tell-all!
Lavender: You’ve been such a good friend to the Tales, and to me especially, it’s the least I could do.

Braine: Thank you! I'm glad you think so. So I guess my first question is why are you outing James and Cindy? I know it's been a long time coming but why now when you're also trying to get your shiz together?

Lavender: (Sighing) You know, everything pretty much went to hell for me after the relocation, and I had a hard time dealing with the guilt from the part I played in all us Tales being transplanted here. I started drinking. A lot. (She shifts a little in her chair, obviously uncomfortable talking about her battle with sobriety.) Anyway, I wasn’t making the best choices during that time, and I was letting James and Cindy walk all over me. Then Tess [Red Little] gave me the kick in the ass I needed to get my life together and finally write my own story. And that rewrite had to start with cutting ties with the Charmings. James in particular held it over my head that he took me in when no one else would and made me feel like I owed him. Can you believe that? Owed him? (She scoffs.) I owed him something all right. I guess we all get what’s coming to us in the end, don’t we?

Braine: Newton's Third Law of Motion...Speaking of getting what’s coming, shrinking James' weenie is genius! It's poetic justice really and I don't think your wand and magic went haywire as far as that's concerned, I think it's supposed to do those things.

Lavender: (Grimacing) Not one of my prouder moments. I definitely won’t make the mistake of calling someone a “little dick” again when my magic’s acting up! But I guess it could’ve been worse… I could’ve called him a shithead.

Braine: ROFL! You should have! That would be one for the Hall of Fame! Now I'm worried because the Charmings sound like a power couple, are you afraid of the backlash this will cause you?

Lavender: (She shrugs.) I was for a while when I first left Chicago, but thanks to my testimony and the FMA’s on-going investigations into James’s business dealings, I think getting revenge on me is the least of his concerns. And Cindy’s influence was directly linked to James, so I’m not worried about her. I have a feeling she’s going to just stay out of the limelight for a while and wait for things to blow-over.

Braine: I have to be honest, I never really liked Cinderella and most of the Princess tales really, except for Swan Lake, so I can't say I felt sorry for her. But as her guardian and having known her before she became a Princess, have you ever had one of those "intervention" talks with Cindy back when you still cared about her? You know with the hopes of steering her back in the right direction.

Lavender: Loads! Unfortunately, she had to learn for herself that her husband was an arrogant ass who only cared about himself. (Her face twists in disgust.) It makes me sick when I think about the magic I used to get those two together. I’d hoped maybe this last talk I had with Cindy would finally snap her out of it. But that effort totally backfired on me. I hope she’ll get back on the right track eventually.

Braine: It's obvious you despise the Charmings. Aside from granting their whims and instigating that fight with the genie, what was the next most obnoxious thing they've done to you, especially Cindy?

Lavender: That’s a tough one! I think the fact that they took it for granted that I’d always grovel and lick their boots in gratitude and never want to have a life—a future—of my own ranks pretty high up there. That was especially hurtful from Cindy. She treated me more like an annoying pet she tolerated than a friend who cared about her.

Braine: Ouch! Do you feel guilty or a little bit sad about how you parted ways with the Charmings? A couple hundred years is still something even if it's not all rosy.

Lavender: Oh, sure. (She shrugs, but her sadness is written all over her face.) I mean, Cindy’s still my ward, regardless of how things turned out. I guess it’s a fairy godmother thing. I still instinctively want to help her, but I can’t do anything for someone who doesn’t want to be helped, you know?

Braine: True that! Do you think you guys will ever make amends at one point?

Lavender: That’s not entirely up to me, but I hope so.

Braine: So aside from the article, your story is coming out soon! How do you feel about it overall?

Lavender: (Her mood visibly brightens at the question and she actually begins to glow with happiness.) I’m thrilled to be able to tell my story and to set the record straight. And I’m so happy to share with everyone what a gentle, loving man Seth truly is. He’s been so maligned all these years, it’s great to be able to give readers a glimpse of how remarkable he is and to tell our love story.

Braine: I agree. He is a great catch! Can I talk and ask you about Seth a little more?

Lavender: Absolutely!

Braine: So you're super friends with Tess "Red" Little who was Little Red Riding Hood to Seth’s Big Bad Wolf back in Make Believe, but you only knew Seth by reputation prior to moving to The Refuge. Had you ever thought that he'd be someone special in your life at one point?

Lavender: I never imagined I’d cross paths with Seth, let alone fall head-over-heels in love with him. Honestly, when I went to The Refuge, I was just trying to figure out who I was now and find my way again. I hadn’t planned on falling in love at all. Lucky for me, things don’t always go as planned.

Braine: Seth says you smell like "lavender & sunshine". If you can bottle Seth's natural scent, what would it smell like? Please don't say wet dog! LOL

Lavender: (She gathers the collar of her black cashmere sweater and brings it to her nose, closing her eyes as she inhales deeply. She’s smiling when she finally answers in a rather dreamy voice.) Evergreen trees in autumn and morning dew.

Braine: *SQUEE* sorry but that's just so sweet, romantic and definitely sexy! Do you cook for him? What dish Seth makes is your favorite?

Lavender: (Laughing) I try! Seth bravely eats everything I make, but I don’t think either of us would argue over who has more skill in the kitchen! He says he likes my chocolate chip pancakes, but I think he’s just trying to make me feel better about my lack of culinary talent.

Braine: Wise man that, Seth. Hollywood is doing a lot of fairy tale films. Tess was portrayed by Amanda Seyfried (I always wonder what she thought about that casting choice), Julia Roberts played Snow's evil stepmom and now Angelina Jolie is playing Maleficent and Hansel and Gretel's tale is showing in theaters last weekend. What are your thoughts about these adaptations? Do you feel they're doing justice to the stories or is it all rubbish?

Lavender: I can tell you, Red would rather not talk about her origin story, let alone watch an adaptation on film. She’s never been a fan of how the storytellers twisted events around—that’s why she finally decided to tell her own story a few months back and really encouraged me to do the same. As for how I feel about all the adaptations? Well, the way I see it, the more people tell our stories, the less likely we are to be forgotten. The worst possible way for a Tale to die is to just fade away…

Braine: At this rate I won't be surprised if Cindy's story is next. In Disney you're portrayed as something motherly or sometimes *gasp* matronly. Let's rectify that and set the record straight, who do you want to play you?

Lavender: I know, right? (She shudders in horror.) Can you see me in a puffy blue taffeta dress? (She taps the heel of her lug sole biker boot, considering the question.) I’m not sure who I’d want to play me… Maybe Natalie Portman?

Braine: Right now, with how things are in your community and personal life, if you could undo sending the characters of Make Believe to the land of Here and Now, would you?
Lavender: (A wistful look comes into her eyes) You know, if you’d asked me that question once upon a time, I would’ve said, “In a heartbeat.” But now… (She shakes her head slowly.) No. I’ve finally forgiven myself for what happened and I’m working with the Tales in The Refuge to help them find their purpose in the Here and Now. For the first time in my life, I actually know who I am and what I’m truly capable of. And I have the love of the most amazing man I’ve ever met. Who could ask for more than that?

Her face suddenly lights up and I turn around in my chair to see the cause of her happiness. To my astonishment, Seth is standing in the doorway, his ice-green eyes trained on Lavender. He offers her an adoring smile as he saunters over and pulls her to her feet, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead.

Seth: Mind if I steal this beautiful woman away from you, Braine?

Braine: Oh, no. Not at all. [What? Like I was going to say no to the Big Bad Wolf?] Thanks again for the interview, Lav!

Lavender: Anytime. (She gives me a big hug then takes me by the shoulders.) And remember, fairy godmothers aren’t just for Tales.

When I gape at Lavender, wondering if she means what I think she means, she just gives me a wink, then heads toward the door, hand-in-hand with Seth. As I watch them pause outside the window for a quick kiss, I can’t help smiling. These two are a “Happily Ever After” if I ever saw one!

Purchase The Better To See You

Kate SeRine (pronounced “serene”) faithfully watched weekend monster movie marathons while growing up, each week hoping that maybe this time the creature du jour would get the girl. But every week she was disappointed. So when she began writing her own stories, Kate vowed that her characters would always have a happily ever after. And, thus, her love for paranormal romance was born.

Kate is a member of Romance Writers of America and of Indiana RWA and has been a finalist in the Fire and Ice Contest (2010), the Finally a Bride Contest (2010), and The Emily (2012). She is represented by Nicole Resciniti with the Seymour Agency.
Kate lives in a smallish, quintessentially Midwestern town with her husband and two sons, who share her love of storytelling. She never tires of creating new worlds to share and is even now working on her next project.

  5. Fantastic interview, but then, with that imagination, of course it would be great! I just read RED and really enjoyed it, so thank you, and I'm definitely looking forward to Lavender and Seth's story! Not at all who I would have thought for him, which makes me even more excited to read.

  6. Loved reading this interview with Lavender! She is such a fun character. I can't get enough of the TRANSPLANTED TALES series and THE BETTER TO SEE YOU is equally as awesome as the first book in the series, RED. I can't wait to read ALONG CAME A SPIDER. This series is urban fantasy at it's best, unique, fun and fresh.
