Loved It: The Weird Girls: A Novella by Cecy Robson

Series: The Weird Girls 0.5
Format: ARC (from Cecy Robson)
Release Date: December 4, 2012
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iTunes

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, a little weird…

The Wird sisters are different from every race on earth—human and supernatural. When human society is no longer an option for them, they move in among the resident vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region. Could this be the true home they’ve longed for? Um, not quite. After the sisters accidentally strip a witch of her powers in a bar brawl, they soon realize the mistake will cost them. Because to take on a witch means to take on her coven. And losing the battle isn’t an option.

Includes a preview of the first full-length novel in the Weird Girls series, Sealed with a Curse—as well as introductions to the Weird World, and a letter from the author.

Usually prequel novellas are big teases: character introductions, mundane backstories or the ones I really hate, an incomplete story ending with a major cliffhanger. Well, I'm happy to report that THE WEIRD GIRLS: A NOVELLA by Cecy Robson is far from incomplete and prosaic. Yes, this prequel does gives us a backstory and a feel of the Wird Sisters, but it's a story that can stand on it's own and a great litmus test to CRobson's debut series.

The Wird sisters are a unique and formidable bunch with their magic and individual abilities which is why I encourage you to read and get this prequel novella before jumping into Sealed With A Curse, book 1 of the series. Each and every one of the four sisters are distinct characters and attempting to take them all in at once might overwhelm you. THE WEIRD GIRLS NOVELLA will help you settle in and get a firm grasp on who is what and get you acquainted with the their world and the interesting mix of powers they have.

The Wird sisters are a loyal bunch, each one very protective of the other and though they bicker amongst themselves, they got each other's back at the end of the day. They are a very curious bunch and I for one would like to pick and prod their backstories a little more like where their powers came from and all those otherworldly genealogies we find in Urban Fantasy stories. The biggest take away for me after reading the novella is nothing will ever be easy and carefree about these sisters. Lake Tahoe might be a beautiful and peaceful backdrop for the lives they're trying to build for themselves but I know for a fact that things will get even more hairy and a coven of witches looks paltry to what's going to happen in Sealed With A Curse.

  1. Great review, Braine :) I'm excited to read this one. ^_^ And I'm definitely looking forward to the sister dynamics. Definitely something new in my reading.

    1. I think you'll like it too. I was pleasantly surprised as to how funny the sisters are and Cecy. Plus when the girls are flocking, the guys aren't far behind.
