A darkly handsome New Orleans detective who insists he’s no hero is blindsided by his one-time lover, a sexy investigative TV reporter, who exposes his secret troubled past to the whole world...and nearly costs him his job. When the at-risk teens he mentors start turning up dead, his vow to protect the other kids hits a major snag...his only clue to finding the determined killer is held by the one woman he never wants to see again. Compelled to work together to solve the vicious murders before another child dies, their passion reluctantly reignites, and their mutual mistrust slowly turns to respect as she realizes there’s much more to being a hero than outward appearances, and his deeply wounded heart gradually opens to the possibility of love.
I guess I saved the best for last because NO HERO takes the cake as far as I’m concerned. This is Dead Sexy at its finest with a cunning and calculating madman whose bark is seemingly more rabid than his bite and an unlikely couple working for and against each other. Gerard Fontenot has a personal grudge against Dev for putting him behind bars and enslaving him in a wheelchair but these circumstances didn’t limit his goal on getting even with the detective. Working from the inside, Gerard terrorizes Dev by killing off troubled teens Dev was helping out. On the helm is Rhegan Connor, she too is after Dev’s skin and unlike popular opinion, she doesn’t think Dev is a hero and she’s on a mission to expose him for the man she thinks he really is. But Connor had a rude awakening when she became the killer’s next target.
You're a one-woman crusade to prove that everybody has feet of clay.
Throughout the story there is a black cloud and mind boggling puzzle going. As a reader you know that Gerard is the mastermind but who is the crafty henchman he’s sending off to do his dirty work for him? So together with Dev and Connor, I was working out the clues trying to figure out who the executioner is. And I LOVE this in mysteries! This go-fish element makes everything exciting and nail-biting, the villain is staring you in the face but it still manages to hide in plain sight. When the identity of the villain was revealed, the person is the obvious choice but MKane wrote this person in the most obscure sort of way.
"You look terrible," she said."Yeah, well, I guess we're a pair, then. Because you look like a drowned cat."She sniffed. "You really should work on that legendary charm of yours. People might get the idea it's overrated."
That covers the Dead part now let’s talk about the Sexy part of this thriller. From the start I know that it’s only a matter of time before things between Dev and Connor starts to get scorching hot. These two hated each other so immensely you know they’re very much in love. Dev and Connor’s courtship is like kindergartens in a sandbox, they throw punches to hide their affection for each other and I for one found it really cute, I’m a fan of The Chase. So when they finally realized that they’re lovestoned, MKane didn’t disappoint because it was explosive.
It don't help to run when you're hauling around what you're running from.
NO HERO is a brilliantly executed story. At fourteen chapters, this Dead Sexy novel managed to satisfy me completely and there’s nothing about it that I didn’t like because even those parts that irked me were integral to the totality of the story. Every emotion I felt was intentional so I’d have this big brew of emotions of varying hues and degrees in the end.

Verdict? If you love Sherrilyn Kenyon, you’ll love Mallory Kane. Incidentally, MKane is a fan and friendly with SKenyon too ;)

Roxanne Rhoads' interview with
If you could have dinner, coffee, or drinks with a fictional character, who would you choose and where would you go?
I would love to visit with the Phantom of the Opera, although I’d probably be so intimidated I wouldn’t be able to speak.

Do you have any hobbies or special interests you’d care to share?
I love playing with paper. I apparently never got over paper dolls. These days I love making hand-crafted greeting cards out of vintage wrapping paper, ribbon and greeting cards.

Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Andre Norton, Leslie Turner White, Edgar Allen Poe.

Are you a pantser or a plotter?
I started out as a pantser, but after I was published by Harlequin Intrigue, I realized that I’d never be able to write 3 or 4 books a year if I waited for the book to materialize. So I learned how to write my synopsis before I wrote the book and to plot out much of my book ahead of time. It makes writing the book a lot faster.

Aside from writing, what do you do in your free time?
I love to cook, since I’m a total foodie. I also love making hand-crafted greeting cards and gift tags.

Do you prefer print books or eBooks?
I’m becoming a real proponent of e-books. I love my Kindle.

  1. Great interview! The book seems very intriguing!

    1. Yes I strongly recommend that you pick this book up!

  2. I have not read anything by this author yet, but will have to. Your review has me wanting to dig in. I could go for a steamy read and I love books that give me a few characters or moments that rub me the wrong way, but can do it in an intentional way. It balances out a story. It is no fun to love every character or everything that they do. Thank you for your great review. I am adding this one to my TBR.

    1. This is a really good sexy mystery, no convenient surprises. Come back and let us know if you liked it or not when you get the chance.
