The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Their beautiful, mist-shrouded town seems almost stuck in time, and all three women lead seemingly quiet, uneventful existences. But they are harboring a mighty secret--they are powerful witches banned from using their magic. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.I am a Melissa de la Cruz fan because of her formidable female characters and though there are certain misgivings about her YA series, Blue Bloods because of it's snobby Upper East Side heroines, I have to say that WITCHES OF EAST END is a lot better in more ways than one.
For centuries, all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married to the wealthy and mysterious Bran Gardiner, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. They unearth their wands from the attic, dust off their broomsticks, and begin casting spells on the townspeople. It all seems like a bit of good-natured, innocent magic, but then mysterious, violent attacks begin to plague the town. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.
There was something new and strange in town; something wicked this way had come.
The Beauchamps are a family of witches that can trace their origins to the Norse Gods of Asgard. Yup, that's why I am feeling this book because I'm still having hot flashes over Thor (CHemsworth) and anything Norse perks up my imagination. Flash forward to modern times and it looks like things are beyond resolved between these Gods. Odin might be sleeping but Balder, Loki and the rest of their lot are stirring up trouble here in Midgard.
Joanna, Freya and Ingrid are women that we probably can relate to in some ways: they have vanities, troubled in finding relationships or keeping one, I for one felt like Ingrid's story was mine. Their character flaws make them human and very much like the pagan gods they were based on: impulsive, jealous, sexual and often reckless. At first I thought that the book will be a lot like that movie Practical Magic (Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, 1998) but it turned out to be this clever, sexy mystery/adventure story that kept me glued to the pages. I'm surprised that it did so considering my reader's fatigue, ha!
She looked, for lack of a better word, ripe. Sex seemed to ooze from every pore, to slither from every inch of her glorious curves.
This is NOT a YA series, Melissa mentioned in her Amazon interview that The Beauchamp Family Series is intended for her Blue Bloods fans who have grown up and are looking for a more mature read. And boy did she deliver it. If you have trepidation about the "snob" factor similar to Blue Bloods, I'm happy to tell you that it's nonexistent here. Joanna is a housewife, Freya a bartender and Ingrid a librarian, so though powerful, they pretty much live a simple life. There is a Blue Blood crossover but it's immaterial to the story but it's more of a cameo appearance, really.
The ending is a cliffhanger and I am glad that the second book, Serpent's Kiss is coming out next week! Freya is in for a big mess and her hand will be forced to choose between her family and her destined mate. Don't you just love forbidden love minus the love triangle!

I might have to check this book out. I read a lot of her blue blood series but I am sorry to say I got really bored, so I gave them up. But this book looks pretty good.
ReplyDeleteYeah Blue Bloods is getting stale, the last book was confusing to read and follow.
DeleteI'm a big fan on Melissa de la Cruz but I haven't read this book yet. I'm not sure why but I keep putting it off but maybe I'll give it a try. Great review :)
ReplyDeleteI like this better than Blue Bloods actually, it's toned down and more of a romantic chick lit than an UF/PNR one
DeleteI've actually been debating getting this book because I saw it at my library, but even though you loved it, I'll probably skip it because you said it wasn't a YA series, even though it was in my YA section. I'll have to talk to someone about that haha. ;) Great review, I'm glad you really liked it!
ReplyDeleteIt's not graphic but things are implied if you know what I mean.
DeleteJoanna's ability to heal serious injuries is my favoutrite ability of the bunch. I love the concept of this book and the fact that book 2 is alomst out is awesome. The trailer was excellent. Except for the line 'life can be a witch' which sounded fake and lame. I love that Wutches of East End is for adults because most paranormal books I like are teen based. I don't mind reading the goodones but the adult one can be a little shallow unless it's full of erotica which isn't my thing. Great review and I'm adding this book to my buying list.
ReplyDeleteMelissa is fond of featuring three fearless females with differ personalities but this is more of a chick lit than PNR.
DeleteOoooooo this books looks absolutely fantastic! I love the cover, title, synopsis EVERYTHINNG! Definitely, definitely reading this one. Great review x
ReplyDeleteGreat review Braine!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness Melissa has given us the Beauchamps! I am in agreeance that Blue Bloods got stale and was filled with too much snobbery and name dropping! I don't really care for the clothing designers name - just a good description does the job nicely! and with book 2 not far away it's a great book to add to the TBR pile :)
Cheers
Marissa
LOL It got better after book 1 but tyen midway it got confusing with the shifting POvs
DeleteI got the second book a week or so ago - but haven't had a chance to read the first one yet. I need to move this series up on my list because I do love the author and your review sounds great!
ReplyDelete- Jessica @ Book Sake
I so envy you! I want to get my hands on that book fast!
DeleteI have every Blue Bloods on my shelf not read them . I get mixed feelings from reviewers, so I have them sitting and sitting. Oneday I will read them. This book could be my fresh start into Melissa's writing:D
ReplyDeleteMichelle
BB first book can be a turn off, start with this one
DeleteI LOVED this book and I can't wait for Serpent's Kiss to come out! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
ReplyDeleteI have yet to get SK because of my monster TBR but I'm sure it'll be good.
DeleteAnd another book to add to my huge list :)
ReplyDeleteI love Practical Magic, and if you say it's even better than that movie, well then, I'm in. Thanks for the review!
You're welcome, I hope you like it
Deletei bought this book last month...haven't read it yet...
ReplyDeletereading ur review wanna make me read mine..
thx u :)
You are welcome!
DeleteAhh, cool. I didn't like the first Blue Bloods book at all (due to the snob factor and awkward writing), but this sounds better. I'll definitely check it out. :)
ReplyDeleteTry the Primer, it's free on Amazon so you'll guage if you'll like it or not. BB can be a turn off but in fairness to her, the myth was solid and I just focused on that to get over the ritzy stuff
DeleteNot that interested in her YA novels glad she's writing for more mature readers :)
ReplyDeleteDebi01760@hotmail.com
Yup this is for her grown up fans she said
DeleteWhen I read the synopsis, I thought of Practical Magic too. I tried the first book in the Blue Bloods series but it didn't really like it. This sounds a lot better though.
ReplyDeleteThis is more relatable than BB which I find more appealing
