For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.
Downside Ghosts is getting a shade darker one book at a time! Obviously I love the story but I want to talk about Chess a little bit.

So it's established that this heroine is truly bonkers, no question about it, aside from Dr. Gregory House, she's my next favorite functioning addict. But a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do and for Chess that's getting favors from drug lords and mobsters and in some twisted way these connections work and does her well. Chess made a series of unwise decisions that led to unexpected circumstances out of that need to survive which led our heroine to a tight spot that will act like a garrote n the long run. I'm a little torn, actually frustrated over Chess because she's managed to back herself into a corner that not even I, the omniscient reader, can find  her an "out". First off, I can't help but feel bad for the girl, not only does her her daytime job stressful but the people she runs with is enough to give anybody a nervous breakdown not to mention the unromantic entanglements she caught herself in.  So I am not sure if my sympathy is enabling her or if Chess managed to demagnetize my fictional moral compass.
Shit. I want you, Chess. Make no mistake on that one, dig? Want you bad. So bad I ain't even can think of any else sometimes, 'cept you under me.
As for Terrible, what can I say, the dude is a dude! Not only does his "accent" baffles me but the guy certainly has issues in articulating his feelings. Passive aggressive much? He is beyond complicated but Chess does get under his skin and I'm betting my two ovaries that she's the only person who made him feel this way. The question is if Terrible's man enough to stake his claim and embrace his tender feelings for Chess. I'll find out soon enough.
Naw, Chess, you ain't a whore. A whore's honest.
All I can say is this did a number on me, the revelations alone had my head spinning and the complicated and dysfunctional emotion between Terrible and Chess probably needs an intervention from either Dr. Drew or Dr. Phil. I am not the most qualified person to untangle their mess, I am but a happy observer and I'm satisfied reading their trainwreck of a story unfold from the sidelines.

This series is addicting, it's better than daytime soap or any Mexican telenovela I've ever seen.

  4. I picked up the first one for cheap (or free?) for kindle but I haven't read it yet. I've heard it's really dark, which is not my favorite thing in UF, but I think it's a series that I definitely have to try! So glad the second one didn't disappoint!
