When eighteen-year-old Chess Putnam is offered the chance to train with a special team of investigators known as the Black Squad, she feels torn. She’s never been a team player and hates how one male Inquisitor condescends to “the new kid.” But at her first bloody crime scene, she gets a taste for investigation—and is hooked on the high. Though the seasoned Inquisitors consider the series of ghost murders random events, Chess starts to detect a pattern. Is a psycho killer summoning ghosts from the City of Eternity and using them as murder weapons? As Chess gets closer to the dark truth, she puts herself in grave danger and risks losing everything she’s fought so hard for.
As the title suggests, FINDING MAGIC is where it all started for Chess. Terrible isn't here just to set your expectations but it is a interesting prologue to fresh faced Chess minus the blonde hair and addiction. It basically tells the story on how Chess ended up working for the Church and recounts the tale of her training and first case.

Every time we get invested in a story that starts in the middle with characters already "made" it's always nice to know where it all started and how the characters ended up in their current predicament. That's what FINDING MAGIC is all about, though it didn't really trace Chess' eventual turn for the worse, it does show us some of the WHY's. Overall it doesn't directly impact the current direction of the story rather it provides a prologue to the heroine. If you're thinking of picking up Downside Ghosts, I suggest you start with Unholy Ghosts.

I have a lot of catching up to do but as I'm following Chess' life, I can't help but do a mini casting couch for her, here are my top picks to play Chess if we're lucky enough to see this series in either the small or big screen.
These two are phenomenal method actresses and both Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde have played troubled females convincingly. I'm still thinking of who can play Terrible as his description is a tall order but maybe you have some suggestions?

  1. I haven't read any of Stacia Kane's books as of yet, but have seeing the reviews around for this book & there all good. I have to def check this author. Great review Braine, love how you stated that this novella is a prequel to the other books in the series.

  2. I love this series. But I would not start with Finding Magic as a first book either. It was nice to have this story though since I am missing the series now. Great Review.

  3. I haven't read this yet, but I'm dying to. See, I want Chess' back story from before the Church "rescued" her. There must be more to that story than we've been lead to believe.

    1. Have you read the other novella, Home? I'm new to the series and like you I want to know what truly messed her up. It must be very tragic for her to resort to addiction and this messy business with the mob/gang.

  4. I really like the insight into Chess's messed up head.

  5. I haven't read this and might not. But I really like your casting couch. Great picks! I just found out today that Stacia Kane is hoping her publisher picks up more books, if not she will self publish. So lets up sales ladies and keep Downside Ghosts going! Seriously, what would I do if she didn't write a book after Chasing Magic! I just might cry.

  6. If Olivia Wilde played the lead, I would definitely see the movie or the TV program. I have a serious crush on her. Sigh. Hey, mirages get us across many a desert! LOL.

    1. Jason Sudakis is one lucky guy! Have you seen Olivia's episode in The Conversations with Amanda de Cadenet? If not you should look for that.

    1. Rooney Mara is the chick in Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I think she'll play a great Chess if the series gets a movie or TV series deal.
