The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.
No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?
Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.
And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?
Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

I won't delve too much on the story's summary because the synopsis pretty much says it all. So I'll talk about Clary a little bit *puts Kevlar vest on*.
I'm not a big fan of Clary from the start for several reasons and I will no longer enumerate why. In CITY OF LOST SOULS she truly annoyed me with her reckless and blind love for Jace without any regard for her friends and family. Of course her "self sacrifice" did everyone good in the end but I still am not a fan of her selfish acts. In her mind she's doing something noble to save the man she loves but looking at the big picture she added her name to the list of people the rest of the group is worrying about not to mention coming up with a plan to rescue Jace and putting an end to Sebastian/Jonathan's evil plots.
Now what truly delighted me was Simon, Magnus and Isabelle. I find Isabelle's infatuation with Simon really cute, it's like watching an episode of Beauty and the Geek! I wish that Simon won't be as dense in the next book and Isabelle even more daring to draw Simon out, these two need to BE in a relationship ASAP. I'm eager to find how Simon's story is going to be moving forward, he's been one of my fave characters in the series since day 1.
The ending blew me away and I am loving how the story is moving forward. I was apprehensive about CClare continuing the series after CITY OF GLASS because in my mind, how can you top that epic arc of the story?! I guess and I'm also glad that the fount isn't dry yet and it looks like the third book can be topped after all.

Jace is in love with the idea of dying. As for Jace, he took the backseat but we still got a glimpse of his acerbic sense of humor and heard pronouncement of his undying love for Clary. I'm just glad that the events and the secondary characters provided enough juice and distraction that I simply ended up tolerating the emo fest.

Your Jonathan was dead, and perhaps death longs for him still, and he for it.Now for darling Magnus, I love his character and I'm happy that though he's running with teenagers he manages to stay above the drama and remains the voice of reason. I don't know what'll happen between him and Alec in the future but I like how he didn't let his love for the boy muddle his decision.

Thank you, followed you back :)
DeleteI skimmed your review because I haven't read this one yet. I am reading it next though. I am glad to see you rated it to highly and what I am seeing from your review I am pretty excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteI will wait for what you have to say, I hope you'll like it as much.
DeleteGreat review :) Clary is annoying but I love Jace, even when he isn't quite himself. Magnus story line was good, liked getting some insight into his past.
ReplyDeleteYes! Good thing the rest of her crew are entertaining enough
DeleteI feel awful saying I haven't even picked up this series yet. I know, lame, right? I think I'm waiting for the whole thing to be written and done. All these series books with cliff hangers... Just think of the great reading that awaits me when these are all said and done. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's ok, I head they'll start shooting City of Bones this August, maybe you can start with book 1 before the movie comes out.
DeleteI haven't read this yet (I stopped at 50% and I still have to pick it up again), but I'm growing really annoyed because of how City of Fallen Angels didn't really cut it for me and City of Glass wrapped up so well! -.- Clary IS kind of annoying, now that I think about it... Great review, though! Maybe I'll pick it up again, although I'm inwardly groaning just thinking about it now. o.O
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog! :)
After City of Glass it does feel like Clare is restarting the series. I wasn't sold on book 4 but this was really good
DeleteHey Braine!
ReplyDeleteFeels good to be back ;) This is a wonderful review, and just what I needed the most. See, I've just finished book 4. It took me over two months of excruciating torture... and I only kept at it because I wanted to know more about Alec and Magnus. So, knowing that the secondaries get more prominency here, and that there's this huge thing happening with Magnus, I'm definitely getting into book 5 with more enthusiasm!
I'll just make sure NOT to grab the audiobook this time. Maaaan, could they put me to sleep...
Thanks for sharing!
Ouch! Yeah Alec & Magnus' relationship is more interesting than Jace & Clary's and Simon & Isabelle are giving them a run for their money as they have a Beauty and the Geek kind of thing going on. I was hardly paying attention to the emo couple in this one but he Jonathan twist was really good.
DeleteI'm REALLY not a fan of these books. I read the first one after much persuading from my friend but I just didn't care about any of the characters - which helps when you're reading a series with many books! Than for stopping by. =^.^=

DeleteTyr Infernal Devices, I like that much better as a series than this one.
DeleteGreat review! I have not yet read this series, but my son loves it. I actually just bought this book for him. I also won the whole series on audio in a contest and can't wait to start it. Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteOh that's cute! Eell you always have the upcoming movie to fall back on :)
DeleteHa, I gave up on this series after the first three books. I gave them all 3 stars. Although Jace was funny, I've always found Clary annoying as hell but after reading your review, I'm considering reading book #4 & #5 just out of curiosity :P
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review!
Kindle and Me.
I've always been annoyed by Clary and their sappy moments is getting old. Good thing her crew is a good distraction.
DeleteThe first three books wrapped up well, i wish the series ended there as intended. Although i like the next four i initially read that books 4-6 was supposed to be Simon's stoy or something, I wish it were that way so I'd read less of Jace & Clary.
I've heard so much hype about this series that I almost don't want to read it and be disappointed like I have been before.
ReplyDeleteI just can't seem to get my hands on the first book.
Well it has a solid following, I personally like it but I'm not crazy over it. This is the only book in the series i gave 5 stars to, City of Glass is the next best book. It's not bad but it's better than Twilight and Fallen.
DeleteI finally finished as I had so much on with blog tours eating my brain up:D I have to put my review into words. Yes, there was that big bang at the end..oh dear!! I feel kinda sad! Things were undoubtledly different in this instalment. Great review! I too really enjoyed it but....it is different...I had funny emotions with Jace being different, it was a nice shake up, but it felt different:D
ReplyDeleteMich
I know what you mean but for me I wasn't that much invested on Jace so I didn't bother or affect me that much. I like Clare's twist on this and aside from Clary, her posse is growing up. Magnus takes the cake in this one for me.
DeleteAlmost every review I have seen is annoyed by Clary/Jace plot direction in this book and they always talked about how much they loved the other characters. My friend loves this series, she always talks about it so I feel like I already know Simon and Magnus though I have yet to read the series. I've only skimmed the first book and I decided to start with the Infernal Devices first. Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL they're giving Bella and Edward a run for their money.
DeleteGood call starting with ID, I like that series better than this one.
This is one of the best sets of books I have read in a while!!!! The characters are realistic and incredibly thought through.... The plot and story line are perfect and you can't go wrong with this book. Great read!
